Subject: ONE WEEK NOTICE "S.O.S. (The tiger took my family)" (September 08)

Written By: K1chyd on 08/31/17 at 7:50 am

For the September 08 update (Next Friday) I will submit a parody based on:

"S.O.S. (The tiger took my family)" by Dr. Bombay.

Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN3f8_oUR8U
Lyrics: https://www.lyrics.com/lyric/14586373

Just like the first time the concept is quite simple; I hope it can get you people here to write parodies of the SAME ORIGINAL SONG and then post them on the SAME DAY. You now got a whole week.  :)

The original song is also known as just "The tiger took my family" or just "S.O.S" - which should give you plenty of alternatives to work with. For starters "family" is a word that has lots of rhymes and near rhymes:

Footnote: The song is from 1998 and Dr. Bombay was a one year wonder in Scandinavia, the song "Calcutta" being the big hit of that summer in Sweden and "Rice and Curry" (which I've already tackled) also getting plenty of airtime.

My idea is.... "Whatta Mess! That Time I Flunked In Alchemy" about a nitwit Hogwarts student bombing in potions class

We're still on ONE WEEK NOTICE for this one - but now that I've been informed that at least two people who wanted to be in on it didn't manage to finish the first "round" in that timeframe I just wanna throw this question out here:

Would "Two Weeks Notice" generally be better, or would the I-can-postpone-then factor cancel out the benefits of more time?

I like the idea behind One Week Notice but time constraints with work got in the way. I would rather have Two Week Notice but I'll leave it up to you all

If you're a new parody writer wanting to try this - here are a few thoughts/tips from me:

The hardest thing about this original might be the other three lines in the chorus (those that ends with father/brother/mother - not a lot of good rhymes for those words) and the fact that the chorus is repeated five times (the lyrics sheet only shows three, but it's repeated another two at the end of the song). You have to decide (somewhere along the write) what to do with that; repeat your chorus, spend additional time on coming up with different ones, or something in between.

Without telling anything else about my own coming parody I'll give out that I'm going with the latter. For the first chorus I've actually kept the words father/brother/mother at the end of the lines. For the second chorus I've switched to grandpa/sister/grandma - bad pacing there of course, but in tune with the original anyway, and the number of syllables are the same. For the third I'm going with a triple rhyme to enhance the theme of the parody on its last breath - the first word almost rhymes with father, but again I'm sacrificing a little on the pacing there. For the fourth and fifth chorus I just cop out with a "repeat chorus" line - though I've managed to write that line as a pun in line with the rest of the theme/parody.

Hope this was helpfull to somebody. See you next Friday if it was! ;)

Gonna see if I can churn this out tonight. The 3-dayweekend distracted me (which would have been the best time to do it!) :o :-\\

If this does take off I would want to stick with the theme of going with unusual that nobody has done before or rarely heard of before because it makes it more entertaining and challenging

Most of my own parody ideas have started with a title idea. Then I look at the structure of the original song, but that's more of a veteran's modus operandi I guess, some we just know right away they are easier to work with than others, that comes with experience. My original thinking before I took any feedback at all was to do two somewhat easy rounds and then one a bit harder. Since then I've been thinking about your previous comment along these lines above and pretty much arrived at the same conclusion. I'm actually switching out my planned third round (which would have been a previously unparodied song by metalband Megadeth) for yet another original rock/pop song from a band that no-one on Amiright knows (according to the archives), one that to me seems to have lot of title switch possibilities and looks easier to work with.

Still, I don't wanna make a rule, there are probably many good original songs who got just one or a few parodies in the archies - but still plenty of potential for more. That last part might be the most important I think. The easier it looks to immediately come up with one or more alternative titles for a song, the more people will try to join in.

So to sum this round up, three on the day (but yours truly botched the headline on Amiright Events).
