Subject: ONE WEEK NOTICE "Give A Little Love" (for Sept.22 publishing date)

Written By: agrimorfee on 09/15/17 at 8:07 am

Greetings Parody Authors, welcome to the One Week Notice Challenge. (or OWN--not the Oprah Winfrey Network!  :o)

The purpose of the challenge is that one song is posted in the One Week Notice thread on Friday, and you are to create a parody of it by next Friday's publishing date (barring acts of God/Chucky G). This challenge is not a contest judging for quality. No points are awarded, constructive criticism is encouraged but there is no requirement to read each parody and/or leave comments. This is done in the spirit of flexing our parody writing "muscles" and to grow a spirit of camaraderie within the Amiright community.

The song chosen ideally should be one that has NOT been already parodied on Amiright, and should also be of reasonable difficulty and length. The host of the parody must provide a link to the OS (original song) lyrics and a link to a YouTube performance video--even better, posting the lyrics in the dedicated thread. Please also include the year the song was first released to allow for the submission form.

Here is my initial OWN, for publish date of 9/22/17

"Give A Little Love"--1976
Artist-- Bugsy Malone Soundtrack
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sA_0cvd1EUM

We could've been anything
That we wanted to be
And it's not too late to change
I'd be delighted to give it some thought
May-be you'll agree that we really ought
Two, three, four

We could've been anything
That we wanted to be
Yes, that decision was ours
It's been decided we're weaker divided
Let friendship double up our powers
We could've been anything
That we wanted to be
And I'm not saying that we should
But if we try it, we'd learn to abide it
We could be the best at bein' good guys

Flowers of the earth
Who can even guess how much
A real friend is worth?
Good guys, shake an open hand
May we'll be trusting
If we try to understand
No doubt about it
It must be worthwhile
Good friends do tend to make you smile

We could've been anything
That we wanted to be
Yes, that decision is ours
It's been decided we're weaker divided
Let friendship double up our powers

You give a little love
And it all comes back to you
(Da da da ra da da da)
You know you gonna be remembered
For the things you say and do
(Da da da ra da da da)
You give a little love
And it all comes back to you
(Da da da ra da da da)
You know you gonna be remembered
For the things you say and do
(Da da da ra da da da)
(Repeat and fade)

This jaunty number is the finale of the film 'Bugsy Malone', my favorite movie of all-time. You may have heard this same song used in a Coca-Cola commercial about two years ago. A little context should be given that this scene is taking place in a 1920s-Prohibition-era speakeasy populated by children who have been involved in a climactic pie-fight. The piano player brings a call to peace. Yes, this IS a totally weird movie. You will be able to see famed Hollywood youngsters Jodie Foster and Scott Baio warbling along to the words, although the lead vocals are performed by adults, including the song's composer Paul Williams.

The main trick of this challenge is the coda that fades out the last quarter of the song in much the same manner as the ending nanananana of "Hey Jude". See how much you can do to rewrite this final coda that repeats the last lines over and over again!

Good luck. See you Sept 22. :D 8)

Well, I'm getting two ideas right off the bat so this might be doable! :)

My general brainstorming advice to newbies would be that even veterans often think the word "love" is hard to rhyme (all the more kudos if you manage here of course) so if nothing comes easy then switch to " + a little + " and see if you can build a coherent theme from such a starting point.

I have an idea... "GIVE A LITTLE BLOOD" about the debate between a guy who is terrified of needles and his nagging nurse girlfriend

You could also do
"F*ck this stupid flood" (About the Hurricane)
"Pigs Roll In The Mud"
"Suck A Little Blood" (About Vampires)
"Squish That Stinkin Bug"
"Biff Is Such A Punk" (About Biff Tannen from Back to the Future)
"Sniff That Stinkin Skunk"
"Sip Until You're Drunk"
"Risk Is Never Fun" (About the board game Risk)

Etc.

:o :o :o :o :o

One of my two ideas up front was "Done a little glove (next time)" about a nagging nurse tirelessly handing out information at the local STD clinic! 8)

Not sure about that, might not have made it over here, but then again to me those opening piano notes scream "horror movie soundtrack". I can't place them to what movie though - anyone here knows? ???

I don't know what Done A Little Glove means but you could do Don A Little Glove about wearing a condom OR Done A Little Slut about needing a condom

That's exactly what I meant only I spelt it wrong! :-[

Anyway, I'm running with a third idea now so feel free to give that line to YOUR parody nurse if need be.

The second idea was "build a little wall" along the lines of Weird Al's "I'm so handy" + possibly a Trump joke or two + various choruses at the end about how it all collapses more and more to end up less and less.

Done! Ready for Friday!

Yeah, me too! :) Looked suitable easy at first, got stuck for a while, had a complementary idea, worked it out.

Hang in there if you're a new writer trying to join for the first time, we already have ourselves a party of at least three.

Nah, it's not from  a specific horror movie...it's just an egistic (what is that word meaning "music being used in a movie as if it was actually being heard by the characters"?), alarming, "pay attention to this" kind of chord.

Just for fun, here is the Coke commercial (probably only shown in the US)

Well, since that parody isn't previously on Amiright now's your chance to change that!

I found it, and it's not very good.  I can see why it was never submitted :)

But I've just sent in one that's a bit better

Yes folks, Chucky (or a mod) has done the Thursday update, so now the submission window for Friday is open, that means you still got approx 20 hours, all things normal.

And Welcome to the party Phil!
