I only wrote one song this month:

http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/barrymanilow33.shtml

Also, I'm proposing a rule change:

~~Voters must leave a brief comment on every parody, indicating they've read it for the SOTM contest (something like, "SOTM--555" or whatever)

If you have an opinion on this, indicate yes or no in this thread when you enter your song.  If it passes, it will be in effect for this month's contest.

:D  http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/aerosmith21.shtml "Dance This Way" to Aerosmith's "Walk This Way".  A sample of the music is included on the top portion of the parody.

I vote 'yes' that we all leave votes, etc.  to each contest parody.

So much easier to pick when you only write one song a month  :)

This is the least active month I've had since I joined, I've been away. And yes, Claude, I am one of the guilty parties about the comments. I read each song, usually vote, but I've been very remiss in commenting on everything. So I'm voting yes with Adagio and promise to follow the new rules like a good contest participant. Whatever voting I may have missed in the last few months is gone now anyway, So I guess we all get a new start. As a tribute to the month, I'll go with the last one I did:

I would kill two birds with the one stone by submitting 'Nacho Monn', but I'm an environmentalist. Emphasis on the 'mental'.
A Weird Al parody that I hope won't get me chased off the site by a hollering mob of yokels with pitchforks:

"Your Bosses' Notes To Get Paid" parody of that hilarious 'Horoscope' song.

The rules above seems simple enough, though due to my school related absence I have never entered before and I´m not really up to date on how this works. Is this like signing up for an initial voting round that will be followed by others as some contestants are eliminated, survivor type thingie, or is it just one voting round where the winner takes all?

If so: "YES" to Claude's new proposition, although I try to do that anyway. Speaking of which...

Just one round.  The first week of the month entries are taken, then you have the entire rest of the month to vote--you read every entry (possibly leaving a short comment on each), post your three favorites in order to the voting thread, and you're done.

It's called "Pull Your Pants Up, Please" and is a parody of "Take a Chance on Me" by ABBA.

I'd rather not require comments on every piece -- it's not going to make someone read a piece they're not inclined to read.  They'll just leave a token meaningless comment, and I'm not sure what's gained by that.  I'd prefer that votes and comments be inspired by readers' organic responses and genuine sense of courtesy and comraderie rather than mandated political correctness.

Subject: Re: July Song Of The Month Entry Thread

Written By: Luke Brattoni on 08/02/04 at 9:21 pm

I concur with Leo Jay, that meaningless comments would be posted, but I believe that it is the only way a truly fair competition is maintained. I must admit that seeing the URL ending with some old 60's fogie puts me off reading it, but I have always gone through every parody and left feedback as it turns out I might actually be familiar with the tune or find a really well written parody which would have been previously overlooked for voting.

So YES, comments on everyone else's work seems only fair.

It is a trouble for me to comment on every entry, I have limited time at the office to screw around as much as I do, let alone look at every entry. I am with Ethan on this. I generally comment on exemplary songs that hit me hard with the laughs or tears.

Anyway, this entry probaobly won't win as it is such a new song that no one will ever hear on the radio and can't find on the 'net, but goshdarnit, it was my favorite work this month that still puts a smile on my face, voting totals be damned! ;)

On the proposed rules change:
I have missed commenting only one month, last month.  I read each entry more than once, I rated each entry (more than once to make sure my votes took -- which rather seems a waste  of time now that I see what's happened to the ratings since I left -- gee whiz, I can't leave for one week, can I?  hee hee!)  Anyway, I didn't want to put just "SOTM - voted/commented" because it makes it sound like it was a chore to read them when the opposite was true or I wouldn't play along every month, but I was not feeling particularly witty or insightful and I know "Nice Job" loses its meaning if it's said too many times... Yada yada yada...  A comment doesn't prove a parody was read, only that it was opened and lack of a comment does not prove that the parody was not opened, read, rated and considered.  So, I'm going to vote a soft "no" on requiring the comments.

Ok, I'll give the token meaningless comments thing a shot...

But can I make a request? (I wouldn't go so far as request an actual 'rule change' since anarchist that I am, I resist all forms of authoritarianism, but...) It would help if the final list displayed entries by song name/author rather than by url -- can we each submit our entries in this format:

A-y-y-y, Bee, Sea (The TV Song) by Leo Jay

It's just a matter of using the following format to create the link:

{url=paste the url here}write your text here{/url}

But use square brackets instead of... hip ones? { }.

My problem is that while there are a number of people who make it clear that they carefully read every entry (by leaving thoughtful comments on every one), there are others who don't leave any trace of evidence that they've even read it.  And since the contest is so competitive, many entries receive few if any contest votes, so the regular votes and comments are all they get out of it.  I find it grossly unfair that someone who spends an hour or more carefully reading, commenting, and leaving votes on 20+ other songs will only receive 5-6 comments/votes on their song.  The least people can do is provide the illusion that they're reading the entries.  The rule isn't intended to discourage thoughtful comments; my guess is the people who've been doing that will continue to do so (because they like receiving comments themselves and grownups know about the golden rule).  But I don't think a brief, thoughtless comment from someone who's supposedly already reading every entry is too much to ask.  If it passes, we'll see how it goes; if we don't like it, we can change it back.

As far as the url thing goes, I think it's a great idea for everyone to format their link that way, but if I'm the one posting the voting thread, I doubt I'll take the time to do it for them.

First time entering SOTM and I'm going with my parody to Usher's "Confessions Pt.1 & 2", "Confessions Pt. 3 & 4". http://www.amiright.com/parody/2000s/usher18.shtml
gonna have to go with a no on the comments thing only because we dont all know each others originals and that makes it hard enough to vote. plus, I was a judge in AmIRight Idle and to MAKE comments and to LEAVE comments are very different things. If I wanna LEAVE a comment I will however, why should I make a comment just to follow a rule if the comment says "DKOTS, Good" ? What good is that?

If I don't know the original, I don't go looking for it.  If someone includes a link for a recording, sample, or lyrics, I always use it; otherwise I simply read the parody and give my assessment based on that.  I've never felt it should be up to the reader to go look for a recording; some people (namely me) don't go around downloading music all willy-nilly and for my part I tend to enter songs at least a few others may know.

Well, if the rule passes you should make the comment to ensure you're not disqualified; that would suck.  But the main purpose of the contest, other than the fun competition part, is to exchange feedback.  If people don't leave comments or votes, there's no evidence of feedback, is there?  I never expected everyone to leave thoughtful comments on every parody and feel it's fantastic that there's a high-quality core of entrants who do.  But the ones who don't should at the very least be leaving their votes to let people know they've read the song and believe me when I say that hasn't been the case.  I wouldn't be proposing this if I didn't feel something was needed to get people to at least pretend to leave feedback and frankly it cheeses me off that so many people are happy to receive all these thoughtful comments and can't even leave a stupid vote when they allegedly read all the other entries.  That's what good it is.
