Subject: February Song Of The Month Entry Thread -- Entries closed

Written By: Claude_Prez on 09/01/04 at 4:24 am

The SOTM contest didn't begin until March this year.  To make up for missing the first two months of the year, if there are enough entries we'll be holding a contest for January during August, and a contest for February during September.

~~Entries begin after the last parody update of the month.
~~Any song first appearing at AmiRight during the contest month (this year) is eligible.
~~To enter, reply to this thread with the url of your entry.
~~By entering, you are agreeing to read all the other entries and vote.
~~On the eighth day of the month, entries close and voting begins.
~~Vote by replying to voting thread with your three favorites in order:  Top choice gets 3 points, next gets 2 points, third favorite gets 1 point.
~~You're not allowed to vote for your own song.
~~Once you've posted a vote, you're not allowed to change it.
~~Voting continues until the last day of the month ends.
~~Anyone who's participated in a SOTM contest may vote.
~~Anyone who enters but does not vote by the end of the month is disqualified and may not participate next month.
~~Voters must leave a brief comment on every parody, indicating they've read it for the SOTM contest (something like, "SOTM--555" or whatever)
~~When the new month begins, the first person to enter the next contest should copy this message and start the new entry thread with it.
~~Rule changes may be suggested by any participant in their entry post.  Changes are made only when a majority of that month's voters specify a "yes" vote along with their contest votes.

Claude:
I'd like to enter "The Ballad of Janet Jackson" (posted on Feb. 4, 2004.

http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/paulhenning6.shtml

I want to apologize to those artists for the last time I entered (July) and did not complete the process; my computer died at home and it's tough to read through all the parodies at work - espcially when it's necessary to download the music to the "DKTOs".  If this disqualifies me, so be it - my bad.

Thanks,
bob

Since I'm racking my brains trying to figure out what to enter, I'll enter one about racking my brains.

Hey, Claude! You going to announce the winner of January?

I've been dying to plug this one for a while. I just missed the cutoff for the March SOTM.

Yay!  I was hoping you'd enter this; it's the first one that came to mind when I thought of this month (now if we can just get Alan Hochbaum to enter "The Night Her Top Was Pried").  No, your disqualification was for last month; your entry is more than welcome here.  Also, it's technically not required to download the DKTO's but obviously it helps if you can.

Hey, Claude! You going to announce the winner of January?

Hopefully I'll be tallying up sometime tonight; if someone else wants to, they may feel free.

February was the month that I made my debut on AmIRight, so I have a lot of strong parodies to choose from. I think I will go with "PacMan", parodied from "Roxanne". Here is the link.

This is my first entry into the SOTM contests, but I think I know the rules well enough to participate.

I'm sorry I missed out on January, didn't know exactly what was happening there until I read the February intro now.  But anyway, I'll enter an old classic of mine:  "Breakin' Some Wind"  (parody of "Against The Wind").

Hey bobbypags,

I am curious...is the Copyirght Office still recognizing the simple notation "Copyright 2004, Agrimorfee" as a viable copyright notice?

Agrimorfee:
Yes and no.  First, I am not an attorney.  However, I can tell you that you own your work upon creation - posting on sites such as Amiright establish (or prove) the creation date.  If your uncopyrighted work is used without your permission, altered without your permission, etc., you are entitled to damages but not attorney fees.  Certainly, you have to prove the damages in court in order to be awarded a dollar amount.  And, then you have to hope that the award covers your lawyer bills with some left over for you.  However, if your copyrighted work rights are violated - I believe it's a mandatory $150,000 per infringement plus attorney fees.  An infringement can be using without permission, performing, altering, etc.  You can look up the law under the U.S. Copyright Act, 17 U.S.C. Sections 101 et seq.
As you can see, the award damages for violations of uncopyrighted works vs. copyrighted works are huge - and your attorney fees are paid by the violator.  The copyright application is only $30 and very easy to fill out.
So, if you have something you think is good - copyright it.  Believe me, it can be a difference of hundreds of thousands of dollars.  (I just never thought I had anything worth copyrighting.  This week, I'm even copyrighting the parodies written by my dog).
Later,
bob

Hmmm....assuming you've read the guidelines carefully (they're at the beginning of this thread), you would go to your author page, find a parody from February 2004, click on it, then copy the address.  Then come back to this thread, and paste the address as a reply.  If this doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll explain further.  But the most important thing is to read the guidelines carefully.

I feel your pain. These things take months to master on your own. Click 'Forum Profile Information' under the bold 'Modify Profile' area and whacko!

Hmm, I was about to skip this backlog comp until I realised that february was the month when I realesed...

A few of my favorite streaks:

Maybe the (only?) way to beat Spaff is to base a parody upon his recorded parody.  ;)
