Subject: January '05 Competition Voting

Written By: Luke Brattoni on 02/08/05 at 12:46 am

~~Vote by replying to this thread with your five favorites in order:
1st choice- 5 points
2nd place- 4 points
3rd place- 3 points
4th place- 2 points
5th place- 1 point.
Or in other terms, p = (6p - rank)
~~You're not allowed to vote for your own song.
~~Once you've posted a vote, you're not allowed to change it.
~~Voting continues until the last day of the month ends.
~~Anyone who's participated in a SOTM contest may vote.
~~Anyone who enters but does not vote by the end of the month is disqualified and may not participate next month.
~~Voters must leave a brief comment on every parody, indicating they've read it for the SOTM contest
(something like, "SOTM--555" or "That was awful, Luke--111" or whatever)
~~In the event of a tie, the parody with the most first place votes wins.
If it's still tied, the parody with the most second place votes wins.
If it's still tied, a brief playoff round will be held.
All participants will have the first week of the month to choose one favorite from among the tied entries.
Tiebreaker voting is strongly encouraged but not required. On the eighth day the one with the most votes wins.

Lordy! Even with 5 votes, this is getting harder and harder each month. I honestly had a shortlist of 12 parodies to choose from, and it would have been a longer list if I knew all the OS's. So much talent!! Well, here goes

5 pts: Claude's "Three-way" (#7)....just pants-wettingly funny.
4 pts: Johnny D's "Lookin' Up MY Backdoor" (#4)....also hilarious in a "Glad it's not me" kinda way
3 pts: Arwen's "A Gumball Broke My Tooth" (#9)...coz the girl needs all the support she can get before she ends up in ER!
2 pts: Stuart's "Angelina" (#3)....a great dedication to my Aussie compadre's obsession
1 pt: Ethan's "Fame Is A Tragedy, Man" b(#8)....for a succint and thoughtful parody on fame. Well done!

Honourable mentions to Jeff, Adam, Luke, Mystery Goat, Spaff, Phil and Scathe (who make up the 12) and my sincere admiration to everybody who entered this month...bravo!

Funny you should mention that.  I'm thinking of proposing we change it to a commenting "suggestion", since it turns out I have no desire to enforce the requirement.  Feel free to discuss.

I really like thought out comments, but if a person is facing a deadline,  all they can do usually is leave "SOTM  555".  How about the first part of the month leave more comments and optional when the deadline approaches?

Seriously though, how can so many people not know Tempted by Squeeze?!! It's like one of the most classic songs of the 80's.

I think we HAVE to keep the commenting requirement.  Even if folks are facing a deadline...(which I was this month)...the fact is that there are those who won't even bother with parodies of folks they don't like, or songs/topics they don't know...and just vote for their friends.  And yes, commenting doesn't take but 5 more seconds than it takes to read the parodies...I think it's time well spent...

Imagine those who don't get any votes, looking at their comments and seeing that nobody "SOTM" commented...that is a formula for a revolt.

I didn't know a d.amned thing about John Jenkins' topic this month...but ended up giving it 5 points, because I HAD to read it, and wanted to understand it, and did a little Googling, and ended up DYING over it.

You did a fabulous job on this one.  Only 14 votes while at least 22 people had to read it for SOTM, I think the "DKTOS excuse" cost ya.

And I wish everyone was as good at Googling as Super Arwen (thank you for not mentioning the payola, Arwen).

I agree with the growing consensus to retain the comments requirement.  I really appreciate good feedback, but Claude raises a good point.  Do we really want to make an author ineligible for a month or otherwise punish him/her for not commenting?  And what if he/she does comment on most of the parodies but forgets one or two?

I think I would vote to punish offenders some way because if we are not going to enforce the commenting requirement, then we should probably eliminate it.  Or can we have voters enforce the rule by not voting for the parodies of authors who don't comment?
