~~When the new month begins, the first person to enter the next contest should copy this message and start the new entry thread with it.
~~Rule changes may be suggested by any participant in their entry post.  Changes are made only when a majority of that month's voters specify a "yes" vote along with their contest votes.

I'm going with If Shrek’s Mom Had Only Been Sterile, which I don't expect to be the only TWOTEF parody in the February competition.

So...for no reason whatsoever, I'm going to go with my parody of Irene Cara's "Fame!" which I call "Shame!"

I'm very reluctant to enter a political parody, even if it is my best of the month (and a good month it was for me, too). But I'm going to take the gamble that people on this message board can see past their politics, and nominate "Bush the Bufoon," to the tune of the Beatles' "Rocky Raccoon."

I'm surprised this question has not come up before, but should there be a provision for tie votes?  I think that so far, all of us voters have done a good job of making difficult, if sometimes arbitrary, decisions in allocating votes.  But should we be able to have a 2-way tie for first, which would give 4.5 points to both parodies, and 3,2,1 points to the next 3 parodies?  Or a 2-way tie for 5th, which would give 0.5 points to both parodies?

Well, I sat out January's contest because I was just too busy with work and I knew I would have trouble trying to deal with reading, voting and commenting on all those excellent works...it seems every month the quality (and sometimes the quantity) grows.  But the pace at work has slowed down now to where I can participate and still manage to get some sleep, too.  My February entry?  Well, it's just about GOT to be a "Pirate" parody, doesn't it?  And a hard choice it be, matey's...but I think I will go with my parody of "My Favorite Things" from the "Sound of Music"...it's called "Aye, Me Fav Pirate Things"...just picturing the peg-legged, glass-eyed scurvy Pirate in that one dancing around the Pirate ship in a Musical-Stage like performance (include some dancing Pirate Matey's in the background if you are trying to imagine it now) singing about all the awful, miserable things he does with joy and relish...and then gleefully tossing some poor captive into the cold, shark-infested ocean at the end pretty much makes this one "Me Fav Pirate Parody" from February...

OH...better stop jabbering and post the blasted link...

Hmm.  Interesting notion.  I'll be honest -- my difficulty is not in allocating the points among five songs but in whittling down to five songs in the first place.  I'm also hesitant to make it any more complicated than it already is.  But if others want to change it, perhaps we should consider it.

can of worms, I reckon, John.

then you have to allow 3-way ties, so a parody involved in a few 3-way ties for 5th might end up with 1x 4.5 + 4x .33 + 2x3....etc = 11.83

It would be tough missing out on a place by 0.17 votes or something.

I understand your point, having been in that situation often enough myself, but having to commit to a decision between two excellent parodies is a small price to pay to keep the process simple I reckon

(I'm sure the Academy Awards don't allow split votes for the same reason)

I've got to agree with Lord McArthur of Melbourne on this one. Last month, of the 23 entries, (22 bcause I can't vote for myself) I had 12 parodies that I honestly could not separate. It took me an hour and a half of rereading and deliberation to come up with my final 5. It's getting tougher, but splitting votes is just going to complicate things and dilute the process. Just think, if you get ANY votes in the high quality comp, you've written a bloody good parody...placings are less important.
The other solution is for everyone not to be so damn funny and talented.... :D

Kristof, Chucky does give us the option to modify or remove our own posted comments.  But, thanks for showing us that you are human. ;)  With the outstanding quality of your parodies, I was starting to wonder.

I had phrased my comment about split votes more as a question than a suggestion; but, after reading the three sensible comments, particular those of the primary vote counter, I withdraw it.

Just a brief note to apologize for the voting thread delay.  I'm having a busy couple of days, plus I didn't know if Luke was planning on doing it or not.  If he doesn't, I should have it up sometime tomorrow.  Meanwhile, all the entries are here so anyone who's antsy to get started can go through and comment (some people have already) so there shouldn't be any big urgency about it.  Also, until this thread is closed entries are still being accepted.  That is all; thank you.

Claude, you don't need to apologize to me for a voting thread delay --- I've been known to delay many days on getting around to posting contest-medals.  Take your time --- it's all just for fun, after all --- and thanks for all the work you do on these contests.

Can people see past their politics?  Very good question, Charlie.  I am not a Bush apologist, and I think that there is much for which he can be criticized - and parodied.  Also, most of my favorite parodies are those that take politics or current events and apply a little creativity.  And I like the clever way your parody ties into the original song.  In spite of this, I disagree with most of the controversial points in your parody.  So, I think I can see past my politics, but it is very difficult for me to put your parody in the top 5 this month, especially when there were so many good parodies that did not have controversial elements that I disagreed with.

Please do not let this stop you from continuing to write clever, controversial parodies, Charlie.  Perhaps we should have a political song parody contest similar to the sports parody contest for which we will soon have a winner.  Or even better, perhaps we should have two (or more) contests for parodies poking fun at liberals and for parodies poking fun at conservatives.

That's cool. I respect your opinion. I'm always looking for contests that I might have an outside shot of finishing in the top ten, rare though they may be  ;)
