I submitted several parody this month, so deciding on one was very difficult.
I finally decided to go with the one with the best vote average.

Simply my best month ever. But I'm going to go with my longest, most underexposed parody of all time. I submit for your approval the epic "Stuck In AmIRight-ville Fresh Out Of Ideas Again," to the tune of the Dylan classic "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again."

The parody: http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/bobdylan112.shtml
Original lyrics: http://bobdylan.com/songs/memphis.html

I think I'm going to get a lot of DKTOS, so if (God willing) I can find an MP3 online or someplace to upload it (myabe somebody can help with that one  :)) then I'll post it.

Unlike Scathe, I'm submitting one that got no votes at all:

BTW, for those folks who are not Star Wars literate, at various points during the development of the movies George Lucas has been, um, inconsistent on the number of episodes he says make up the complete tale.

You should have a competition where people vote for their favourite parodies by different authors in that month, without restriction, so it would be interesting to see which songs get voted for. I'm way too modest to nominate my own songs.

Claude,

My entry is the title track for my full-album parody of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".

I'm asking folks to consider only that "title track parody" as my SOTM entry this month.

But... Claude, if possible, please list the link to the full-album parody posting as well, so my SOTM entry can be seen in context...thanks!

Here's my entry, the "title track parody"...

"Roddenberry's Lonely Star Trek Fans"

And here's the full-album parody posting of which it is the title track...

My opinion is yes, but people who disagree will be free to penalize you on the voting.  Maybe this is a good opportunity to find out if we need a new rule about it.

If you are asking about "The Raven - Revisited," that should definitely be eligible and I would expect it to do well.  But it does raise the question - Why do we call the contest "Song of the Month," not "Parody of the Month"?

Hmm... maybe because the abbreviation POTM would inevitably, and probably faster than you can say "Johnny D", start to be refered to as "pottymouth"?

Good question though! :-)

Subject: Re: March Song of the Month Entries

All right, I can sense a consensus when I see one.  I guess I always thought of "Song of the Month" as sort of short for "AmiRight Parody Song of the Month".  But I see no reason to exclude poems and the like, as long as they're AmiRight-accepted.  So POTM it is.

Subject: Re: March Song of the Month Entries

Written By: MooRocca on 04/04/05 at 3:07 pm

On the questions before us:

Most entries, including a LOT of the best entries, technically, aren't parodies, at all -- just new words to existing melodies or meters.  Either "Song of..." or "Parody of..." could have been in the title and I'd have assumed that any submission Chucky approved and published to the Song Parodies section of Amiright during the contest period was eligible... regardless of whether it was technically a "song" or a "parody."  It's only switching from one word to the other that draws my attention to the strict definitions of those words, changing my perception of the spirit of the competition.   So, I'm fine with Emi submitting a poem-parody and I vote "no" on the proposed name change because making this particular change places an unnecessary and probably unintentional focus on semantics that would *drastically* alter what I'd consider entering and what I'd consider eligible for my top 5 picks.

(Assuming I haven't completely misunderstood the competition all along) That a qualifying entry must have been a submission that was accepted and published specifically in the "song parodies" section (and not some other section) of Amiright during the contest month is already spelled out in the contest rules, so if a name change is necessary to clear up some confusion about which Amiright submissions from that month qualify, it would seem that "Submission of the Month" would be a much more suitable all-inclusive name than either "Song of the Month" or "Parody of the Month."

Just my .02... and probably overpriced, at that.  :)

D'oh!  Caught me being a dictator.  Actually, your point about semantics is a good one.  And your idea about anyone who really needs to be anal about it can call it the "Submission of the Month" contest is a good one too.  So I'm changing it back now, since I didn't really have the right to change it without a vote.  Everyone is used to "SOTM", it's confusing and probably pointless to change it, and if we want we can add language explaining the specific rules without changing the name.  So if anyone feels strongly that we should change either the name of the contest or change or add a rule explaining in further detail exactly what submissions are accepted, they should officially propose the vote in this thread before the entries close Friday.  Thank you.

New rule proposal: we flood the world with parodies (or 'appropriations of intertextual sources') so that the global scourge of postmodernist mindset willl get bored with itself and finally go away.

Ahem, 'SOTM' will do fine, regardless of how many times Emi STUFFS IT UP.

I've been thinking about it for a while now and I've decided not to enter this time around. I only wrote one parody this past month based on a true story about a boy who went to Catholic school and was half-Jewish. While I appreciate it when my parody gets more exposure, I feel this is the wrong place for a work that isn't necessarily even trying to be funny. Plus I would like those who view it to view it outside of the structure that the tournament imposes i.e. necessitating the comparison of different creative works to see which are 'better' so as to vote logically.
Here is the link for those interested in checking it out anyway:

http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/johnnycash48.shtml

On another note, I'd like to back MooRocca on her earlier statement about why the name change isn't really necessary. Couldn't we just think of it as "'Submission' of the Month" or "'Spoof' of the Month" and not have to change the abbreviation?
