Subject: Parody DECATHLON: Event 1

Written By: Kristof Robertson on 07/26/06 at 8:44 am

Well, seeing as that nobody else has entered, the contest can begin today. You've got an extra 4 days to put your masterpieces together.
I've just reached into my two hats (A tatty baseball cap and an Akubra)...and the winners are......

DECATHLON EVENT 1:

TOPIC: A historical figure or event

GENRE: Easy-listening

http://www.ezprezzo.com/crazypics/crazysports1.jpg

Well, this is going to be fun!

THE RULES

~~Entry URLs to be posted onto this thread from the Amiright site

~~Entries must conform to both the topic and genre specifications...if in doubt, ask.

~~On the 14th August, entries close and voting begins.

~~Vote by replying to voting thread with your five favorites in order:
Top choice gets 5 points, next gets 4 points and so on to 1 point for your fifth favourite.

~~You're not allowed to vote for your own song.

~~Once you've posted a vote, you're not allowed to change it.

~~Voting continues until the 28th August.

~~By entering, you are agreeing to read and comment on all the other entries and vote.

~~Anyone who enters but does not both comment on all entries and vote by the deadline is disqualified and may not participate in the next event.

~~If you miss a submission deadline, you will not be entered in that event, but WILL be allowed to enter the next event.
However, there will STILL be an expectation that you comment and vote in the event you are not participating in, unless you have a valid reason for not being able to.

~Rule changes may be suggested by any participant in their entry post.  Changes are made only when a majority of that event's voters specify a "yes" vote along with their contest votes.

SCORING: Unlike PAOTY, scores for each Decathlon event are not cumulative. The winner of each event gets 9 Decathlon points, 2nd gets 8 and so on. This should make the contest very close throughout the next 20 weeks.
A Leaderboard will be posted after the first event

HAVE FUN!!!!!!

C'mon McArthur, this is an easy round. You've already parodied (if I recall) Frank and Nancy Sinatra (twice), Bobby Darin, Richard Harris (OK, maybe he's not too easy to listen to) Dionne Warwick and Bobby Vinton. And history gives you a bloody big playing field to muck around in. You'll be fine, sport...just have a suck on your inhaler and get writing!  ;)

Josh2, easy listening is like that horrible sappy music that was made a lot in the 70s.

(and I'm still obviously an onlooker, but my "Wreck Of That Dude Bode Miller" would have been perfect for this! But I dunno if this February is quite ancient history...probably not. ;))

Any sufficiently large music store should have an "Easy Listening" section. If you can get to one, just browse around and see what's there.

You can also get some info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easy_listening.

Josh...Brown Girl In The Ring isn't quite E-L. Think Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby,  Dean Martin, Barry Manilow... "Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree" and "Feelings" are easy listening classics. Ask your folks; they'll point you in the right direction.
And don't worry; I've got current music genres on my list, including hip-hop.

Gosh, Tomario, you're quick. Entering old submissions is perfectly legal if they meet the criteria, and would save you a load of sweat. Personally, I'm going to try to write a new parody for each event...it'll be more fun for me that way. But, hey, that's just me.  :D

History goes back as far as you want it...you can do cavemen discovering fire if that rocks your boat!.Johnny Cash is definitely Country. Here's a list of some people you could use:

Perry Como (later material)
Robert Goulet
Engelbert Humperdinck
Frank Sinatra
Bing Crosby
Roger Whittaker
Andy Williams
James Taylor
Tony Bennett
Carpenters
Perry Como (earlier material)
Nat King Cole
Sammy Davis Jr.
Doris Day
John Denver
Neil Diamond
Dean Martin
Olivia Newton-John (earlier material)
Barbra Streisan

You could include Norah Jones and her kind of music as well

Think slow jazz, lounge music, middle-of-the road and you'll be fine

Quick question...

I saw the penalty for not voting/commenting...but will there be penalties for not completing an event/posting an appropriate parody by the deadline?

I'm not asking because I plan on not finishing...but I'm just wondering...if someone DOESN'T complete an appropriate parody within the allotted time...are they going to be punished?

Just guessing here...but I really don't think that Stuart will submit anything he's already written.  Like Kristof, he'll enjoy the comp more if he gets to write something new for each event.

That's just a silly elf speculating...but you know, I'm generally right.

Anyway...we all know I don't just log on to talk about other people...but usually to talk about myself.  As it turns out, inspiration struck me, and I had to run with it...for fear of losing it forever.

And so, I'm up way too late...and will probably be dead on my feet at the office tomorrow...but my entry should be up in the morning as well.  I'm not telling what it is...you'll just have to check it out and see...

Goodnight All!

Dean Martin? Frank Sinatra? Good, some people I know! When I saw the genre selection for this event, my first thought was along the lines of "CRAP!" Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a parody to write. I think I'l turn 'My Way' by Frank Sinatra into 'D-Day'. It sounds good on the theoratical "paper", but will it turn out good in "action", so to speak

Good question, Arwen!
My ruling is: if someone misses a submission deadline, they obviously won't be able to compete in that event, but will NOT be DQed from the next event...that would be overly punitive. I'll add that to the rules; thanks for bringing it up

White Freakin Christmas it is. >:( ;D

Ahhh, I get you now, Josh. Well, technically anything that's already happened is history...but I don't think there's much kudos in writing about anything that happened very recently (say, in this century) Other than that, open season!

As for Funny...yeah, of course! You can have fun putting a humourous spin on serious events or figures. But I'm sure a well-written, clever, but not LOL funny parody would do just as well in the votes

Kristof --- I submitted "Free Forever! What A Night!", a parody of "Oh What A Night" by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons ... the tempo of "Oh What A Night" is about the same as the tempo of "Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree" ... so, will you allow a parody of "Oh What A Night" by Frankie Valli to qualify as "Easy Listening" ?  If not, please let me know soon so I can crank out a different entry ... I can always use "Free Forever! What A Night!" as my July SOTM entry!   :)

Errrrrr....I don't want to set myself up as the Genre Police; it's not MY comp, it's OURS, so I think quite a bit of latitude is allowed...with some boundaries (if someone was to, say, enter Metallica in the Country event, that would probably be dropped). I, personally, wouldn't call "Oh What a Night" easy-listening (my creed; if you can dance to it, it's not E-L), but I wouldn't DQ it if you decided to enter it.

Kristof,

Which, if any, of the following artists (and in some cases OS's) would you consider "Easy Listening":

But you can "slow-dance" to E-L, and everybody "slow-dances" differently ...  ;)  ;D

It will not be possible to enforce category restrictions for song-selection in any way that is objective and clearly-defined, unless the contestants are required to choose their OS from a pre-defined list of category-specific OS's.  Defining a list by artist won't work, because some artists do both E-L and other types of music.  Assuming that most people know what is and isn't E-L will work for some people but won't work for other people who might have honest and good-natured differences of opinion over what constitutes E-L.  :)

Thank you, Kristof, for your honest and in-depth explanation of your vision for this contest.

Because of the concerns I listed above, I withdraw from this contest, with no hard feelings, and with my best wishes  :)  :)  :) for all my parody writing colleagues whe have entered and are taking on The DECATHLON CHALLENGE --- I will cheer ALL of you on from the sidelines!  Best of luck to you all --- and LET THE GAMES BEGIN !!  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

Johnny,
If this is truly the only reason you're withdrawing from the comp, then I urge you strongly to reconsider (and I hope my fellow competitors will back me up here)...I don't think anyone is going to take the genre component too seriously, and I can imagine a lot of passionate, but light-hearted and fun conversations about what's in and out.
At the end of the day, we're not trying to achieve world peace here.....and your absence from this contest will be SORELY missed by all involved. (Heck, I'm welling up as I type this...)
Sleep on it, friend, and come back tomorrow.

I'll back Kristof up...stick with it, Johnny!

I don't think KR is intending to be the end all on every decision here.  He just said that HE wouldn't consider your first song choice to be easy listening...but he's not going to DQ it.

I think if there's a question on genre...that we should leave it up to the contestants to decide.  Kristof isn't going to be the only judge on the winners...so why should he be the only one who can choose if a song fits the genre or not?

Everyone is going to define music a little differently.  So, how about if...more than 2 people, who are competing in the contest, contend that any competitor's song choice doesn't fit the genre...then the submitter has to re-submit a parody with another OS.

Thanks for the kind words of support, folks.  Okay, I will reconsider my decision.

The reason I gave for deciding to withdraw --- the ambiguity of the entry criteria --- is indeed my real reason.  I can trace my feelings about that kind of thing back to a contest here 2 or 3 years ago that was being proposed by someone who said something about DQ'ing parodies if they got lots of votes but were, in that individual's opinion & in the opinion(s) of whoever agreed with that individual, obviously not good enough to deserve those votes ... Kristof, I know of course that that's NOTHING at all like what's on the table here, believe me!  :)   I just mention that to give you all a context for understanding how I developed my little neurosis about clarity of contest criteria --- a number of you have expressed concern about what my real motives were, so I mentioned that little nonsense from the past to keep everything honest and out in the open here.  Thanks for putting up with MY little nonsense, my friends!  :)

Whew! I thought I was going to have to have a made-up panic attack to get you to reconsider, JD.
The contest you mentioned sounds horrible....I can assure you, that's NOT what this contest is about. I truly believe that all the contestants are keen to enter into the spirit of fun...and as you can see by the response to this first event, everybody's willing to help others out. I don't believe we'll ever have to consider DQing an entry...people here are too concerned about doing their best (good on 'em!) and my motto will be "CLOSE ENOUGH!" for just about anything
LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!

Stop cracking open the history books Stu!!!!

God bless you Matthias! :) You're absolutely right! I am down and done with. ;D  See you guys in Round 2!!!

Just guessing here...but I really don't think that Stuart will submit anything he's already written.  Like Kristof, he'll enjoy the comp more if he gets to write something new for each event.

How dare you Matthias!!  >:( AS IF if I would enter something I've already written!  You, sir, have offended my honour!

I shan't enjoy this comp unless I get to write something new for each event.

Shame on you!! >:( >:(

;)

Okay.... Is Just A Gigolo concidered Easy Listening it was the same time frame as the others.... But.... I dunno
Because I had this good idea.... Just A Kid Pharaoh... about King Tut, would that work?

If not there's always... Horseless Carriage... to Love and Marriage

Still can't decide on a song as Chucky decided not to let my White Christmas Parody through, probably too short even though I parodied the song and it came to 9 lines.

Just the Way you are by Barry White, would that be ok?

LOL - yes bruises definitely need avoiding (given there's no Angelina tieing me up and administering them)

- however bruises would be a walk in the park compared to the incurring of Arwen's wrath :o

Absolutely brilliant ideas, Matthias...if I can't come up with something, can I have one of your spares?  ;)

Thanks Kristof.  :)

I have reconsidered, and I just submitted the following parody for the next posting ... does this qualify?

Here it is, in a "sneak preview" ...

"Unforgettable" Based on the performance by Nat King Cole
"Hunforgettable" Parody by Johnny D

JD...Nat King Cole IS Mr Easy Listening... and what a fab parody

Sorry for butting in here but I saw the fuzz and suddenly remembered something that might be of interest, I'll just let it out and you can take it for what it is or expand on it or totally ignore it or whatever. 8)

Last year I was asked about my opinion on the ABC contest and a possible third round of those (I haven't been very active in the first two but was asked anyway) and from the top of my head I replied that I thought that compared to parody titles sorted alphabetically it would be much more interesting with a parody contest or the like based on songs that were number 1 on the American Billboard Chart a given year, and then another year and another year and so on. Maybe starting with 1950 and working the way up to 2005. Maybe with ten year gaps per round to avoid getting stuck on the same decade.

Maybe like this: First 1950, then 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000.

Then 1951, 1961, 1971, 1981, 1991 and 2001.

Then 1952, 1962 etc

Why the American Billboard? Since the majority of contributors after all are American, and going with Billboard number 1s since they're probably pretty well known, yet leaves approx 20-25 per year to chose from. Or per round if you by any chance would be able to incorporate this idea with the decathlon one.

Also, though I'm just guessing here, I think that a billboard top 1s angle could fit the criteria Chucky has for putting a link up in the news section for each round, on the top of the front page, and if so that way you'd all get even more extra attention to those parodies! ;)

Later // Peter

Hunforgettable

(an ode to Attila The Hun, in the form of a parody of Nat King Cole's easy-listening classic, "Unforgettable")

I'll be writing mine shortly...though I've changed the OS from 'My Way' to 'That's Life' because I'm more familiar with that one (because for some silly reason it was on THUG2). It's still about the same war...though the subject is changed from D-Day to the Holocaust. Not very funny but a contest's a contest (I blame Kristof! He was the one doing the hat-picking after all).

It's submitted! Now it's about some general trying to get out of going to Germany and freeing the Jews in the Treblinka Work/Death Camp...it won't as funny as some of my other work, but for that, you can fix the blame squarely on Kristof :P.
