May 2007
Song Of The Month Contest

~~Entries begin after the last parody update of the month.

~~Any song that is posted on AmiRight during the contest month (this year) is eligible.

~~To enter, reply to this thread with the url of your entry.

~~On the eighth day of the month, entries close and voting begins.

~~Vote by replying to voting thread with your five favorites in order:
Top choice gets 5 points, next gets 4 points and so on to 1 point for your fifth favourite.

~~You're not allowed to vote for your own song.

~~Once you've posted a vote, you're not allowed to change it.

~~Voting continues until the last day of the month ends.

~~Anyone who's participated in a SOTM contest past or present may vote.

~~By entering, you are agreeing to read and comment on all the other entries and vote.

~~Anyone who enters but does not both comment on all entries and vote before the end of the month is disqualified and may not participate next month, and the votes they gave are cancled.

~~When the new month begins, the first person to enter the next contest may copy this message and start the new entry thread with it.

~~Rule changes may be suggested by any participant in their entry post.  Changes are made only when a majority of that month's voters specify a "yes" vote along with their contest votes.

Though I'll be sitting out this SOTM, I believe I can still suggest a rule change.

I propose changing this:

"~~By entering, you are agreeing to read and comment on all the other entries and vote.

~~Anyone who enters but does not both comment on all entries and vote by the end of the month is disqualified and may not participate next month."

to read:

"~~By entering, you are agreeing to read and comment on all the other entries before voting.

~~~~Anyone who enters but does not both comment on all entries before voting and vote by the end of the month is disqualified and may not participate next month."
Also, we may need to clarify what a DQ means.
In the past (and now), it meant forfeiting all your points for that round and ineligibility in the following SOTM. Since commenting became mandatory to avoid a DQ, if one were to vote on the MB and not comment on all works, that is a still a DQ: IMO votes cast by that person should not count (even if they voted for my entry).
This was nearly an issue last month. There is no precedent on such a thing, and my statement then to the effect that there was was incorrect. I think it better to set a rule now than have potential arguing in the future over whether or not a entrant DQed in this fashion should have his/her votes nullified.
(even if they voted for my entry).
LOL
karma points for you Jack, as I was about to make the same suggested rule change.
To address your second point about DQ's losing their votes as well, I suggest we change a second line of the rules from the current wording...
Anyone who enters but does not both comment on all entries and vote by the end of the month is disqualified and may not participate next month.
to
Anyone who enters but does not both comment on all entries and vote by the end of the month is disqualified, any votes they've given are cancelled, and they may not participate next month.
so that makes two (slight) rule wording changes to vote on
I urge everyone to vote yes for both, because although they are only minor adjustments, the original wording could have led to some awkward situations where a SOTM medallist might have been overturned on a disputed technicality
Though I think it'll pass easily, we have to vote in rule changes by majority opinion come the voting thread, just to appear, uh, democratic, and stuff.  ;)
Subject: Re: May SOTM Entry Thread
If I may, Stu, there's two different rules changes being discussed here. One is complete commenting before voting, the other is redefining the already unwritten but known by all definition of a DQ.
We're in complete agreement on the first.
I think everyone realizes that a DQ means your points go bye-bye and you sit out the next month (IIRC, this used to be on the voting thread...). I don't think it ever was interpreted to mean any points you give are also gone.
I think a written definition of what a DQ means in its entirety should be posted on the voting thread rather than what is accepted as "common knowledge" to be the "rule" of the day. Nowhere does it say points are forfeit in the current threads, yet it's common knowledge.
DQ now means: forfeited points, ineligible for next SOTM
Let's add (if it passes a vote)
"A disqualification means you forfeit any and all points you received for a contest, any points you may have given are nullified, and you are ineligible for next SOTM."
yes that's fine - I was suggesting adding a phrase to the disqualified line to help define DQ, but you're suggesting a whole new line defining the consequences of DQ should be added to the end
either way is fine, as long as the 3 consequences are spelt out        1.forfeit points        2.nullified votes      3.ineligibility next month
Although.... I think we really should just to a monarch rule change, because it's needed
I agree with Matthias - I don't think it even needs a vote
And if nobody else thinks it needs a vote (and post here, if anybody does) why not just make the wording adjustment now (ie. in a week or so)?
After all, the change is only to make things clearer for future newbies, who wouldn't be voting on the change anyway.  All regulars know these finer points of the comp rules already.
The only reason I see not to auto change the rules is this:
~~Rule changes may be suggested by any participant in their entry post.  Changes are made only when a majority of that month's voters specify a "yes" vote along with their contest votes.
You're right, they are minor changes and all the regulars know them. I think Aggy dissented a bit last month, so it's far from a unanimous vote so far (all that's needed is 51%).
Claude set out the rules quite well, and I'd rather go that route and change rules (however minor) the way it was originally intended.
Submitting only one parody to the site each month makes it much easier for me to choose which to enter into SOTM.  So, here goes:
I Am the Very Model of a Presidential Candidate
Also, I intend to vote "yes" to both proposed rule changes, as it seems most people will, but I think it's important that the changes should follow the documented procedure and go to a vote rather than being made unilaterally by the moderators.
I understand the bottom two rules quoted above, but I'd like to ask the experts here how they pertain to the first one quoted above.
For example, I participated in March's SOTM.  Doing so made me eligible to vote from then on...whether I actually enter the contest or not.  So, does voting when not actually entered, release one from the "must read and comment on all entries" rule?
good point :-\\
wow, the wording of the rules have really been getting a working over lately - good thing that that is
it's generally understood that if you vote and you're not an entrant (ie. you have been one in the past but are not entered in the contest which you're currently voting in) you still must abide by the rules the entrants abide by - that is, you also must comment on all entries before voting
Two recent examples I can think of this happening are Spaff and Peter/K1 - and they both commented on all entries before voting.
However, as you point out, it doesn't say so in the rules, so there may need to be another tweak of the wording to clarify that.
Also, what happens re disqualification if a non-entrant votes without commenting - is it possible (and if so, is it fair?) to disqualify a non-entrant?  (when by definition disqualify means to take away the entry qualification - that the person never actually had) - and if they were to be disqualified, does that mean they're banned from the next comp, even though they weren't entered in this one?
I suggest a non-entrant who doesn't comment on all entries before voting only has their votes nullified and that's all - no further penalty
what does everyone else think?
I think I was the only dissenter on the issue, simply because I thought that punishing an honest mistake that could be rectified before contest deadline was harsh. With all that, I will pull the Supreme Court gambit and simply abstain my vote to allow the rule change in, with no personal gumption about it either way.
