Subject: May SOTM Voting Thread

Written By: Matthias on 06/10/07 at 3:45 pm

Note to new participants: Welcome, and good luck. Please read all guidelines carefully. Especially, please make sure to read all the entries and vote by the end of the month. The SOTM is not so much a contest as a feedback exchange. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, either in this thread or via personal message. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

This is my 2nd month as host. . .thank you for continuing to allow me to host the prestigeous contest.

~~Vote by replying to this thread with your five favorites in order:
1st choice- 5 points
2nd place- 4 points
3rd place- 3 points
4th place- 2 points
5th place- 1 point.

~~You're not allowed to vote for your own song.

~~Once you've posted a vote, you're not allowed to change it.

~~Voting continues until the last day of the month ends.

~~Anyone who's participated in a SOTM contest may vote.

~~By entering, you are agreeing to read and comment on all the other entries and vote.

~~Anyone who enters but does not both comment on all entries and vote by the end of the month is disqualified and may not participate next month.

~~In the event of a tie, the parody with the most first place votes wins.
If it's still tied, the parody with the most second place votes wins.
If it's still tied, a brief playoff round will be held.
All participants will have the first week of the month to choose one favorite from among the tied entries.
Tiebreaker voting is strongly encouraged but not required. On the eighth day the one with the most votes wins.

~~Any entrant whose votes don't show a timestamp prior to midnight on the last day of the month (ie. according to the "inthe00's meantime" clock as it appears BEFORE you log in - not a timezone corrected version) is disqualified, without exception.

There is something wrong with Frohekian Rhapsody that is preventing me from voting for it, yet I am able to comment. I click on the vote button and nothing happens. Is anybody else having this problem?

I've only got four more parodies to read, followed by the really tough part of SOTM -- arranging a Top Five and picking a winner. It was a tough month (so far), so if I have not casted my vote tomorrow, it will be soon.

Again, Good luck to everybody! :)

It wasn't easy, but I'll start with my five favorites that didn't make the cut...

10. "Leader of the Mac" by Agrimorfee
09. Ode To a Superhero, Part Deux -- "It's Still Spider-Man to Me" by Jack Wilson
08. "Smelt You on the Bus Line" by BAD
07. "Presidential Candidate" by Chris Frederick
06. "The Hammock Song" by Max Power

And now, the five that did...

1 Point... Jason's invasion of Parliament
2 Points... Wannabemustangjockey's astonishing truth
3 Points... You don't wanna know  :-X

Another tough month to judge, but here goes

First Place:  Stuart McArthur.  The OS is the lamest anthem from the 80s, and you successfully skewered, grilled, and plated it.  With an appetizer of Shark Fin Soup.
Second Place:  Kristof Robertson.  That is why I don't like a lot of modern music.  It's more about marketing than talent.
Third Place:  Phil Alexander.  I like free.  I like tits.  I love free tits.
Fourth Place:  Wannabemustangjockey.  Poor Lone Gunmen.  Never got any respect.  Wait, how can you be Lone Gunmen? ???
Fifth Place:  Chris Frederick.  Unfortunately, an accurate description of many candidates.

Thanks for another funny month, everyone.

OK, here we go again. First an honorable mention to Chris Fredrick, once again my last cut. :( Don't worry though, it's nothing personal, Arwen was once my last cut for (I think it was and I didn't realize until afterwards) three out of four rounds before she (IMHO) lifted her game and became (once again I didn't realize until afterwards) my numbero uno choice three months in a row, an accidental honor I did'nt even give to Spaff back in 2004 when he was sucking up the SOTM votes like a tornado sucking up papparazzis after hitting Paris Hilton's house. :)

1 point to "Mother (Norman's Lament)"

It was a pleasant surprise to see this OS used here, I'd never expect that but the original is so over the top that it deserves being parodied more.

2 points to "Smelt You on the Bus Line"

Stuart's comment on this parody pretty much captures my feelings too BAD, nevertheless this one made it into top five.

3 points to "Hardrockhiphoppunkyfunkyemotechnodiscocountry"
You're trying to please all of us at once, aren't you? :-)

4 points to "(It's On My) Rider"
I've been here on Amiright for 5-6 years and from the top of my head I can't remember reading a parody about riders before, such an obvious topic once you think about it and this parody deals with it in a great way.

5 points to "Totally Dissed Noah's Ark"
What can I say, this parody floats on top of everything else this month!

2 points goes to Below Average Dave, for his smells on the bus.. I feel your pain, I really do
3 points goes to Conqueror of Parodies, for his smells of... you don't wanna know, once again, your pain.. I feel it... I feel it!
4 points goes to Kristof Robertson for his absurd yet very true genre based song. So true, people are into crazy music nowadays.
and last but CERTAINLY not least... the amazing... the exciting... THE ABSOLUTELY RIVETTING!

PHIL ALEXANDER FOR HIS FREE TITS!... Hehehe... tits...

I trimmed down to six fairly quickly, but kept monkeying with the order of these, 'cause I like them for very different reasons.. but finally, it goes something like this:

5 points - #1. "Simon Cowell's Theme" by Matthias
-- just to say that this won out 'cause it's one of my favourite OSs, and a real bugger to parody.  And done very well indeed.

4 points - #11. "I Am the Very Model of a Presidential Candidate" by Chris Fredrick
3 points - #7. "Hardrockhiphoppunkyfunkyemotechnodiscocountry" by Kristof Robertson
2 points - #16. "Leader on the Mac" by Agrimorfee
1 point  - #9. "Totally Dissed Noah's Arc" by Stuart McArthur

Honorable mention: "It's On My Rider" by McKludge

My HM goes to wannabemustangjockey. . .I think that um. . .honestly. . .this one along with the other 5 were kind of a toss up . . .these 6, well, they were about equally as good, it was tough to make a cut, but alas I had no choice. . .I'm sorry buddy.

5th, 1 Point to Agrimorfee . . .which BTW, Grease. . .sorry. . .I knew I kinda recognized it, but I hadn't seen Grease since I was little. . .was this in Ages?  I'm not sure, it's just the topic and approximate time of the song. . .I don't remember reading it, but. . .anyhow, great job

4th, 2 Points to Phil Alexander's Free Tits. . .purely taking a song that was kinda already there and pushing it the extra mile, the opposite direction.  ..

3rd, 3 Points to Stu McArthur's Totally Dissed Noah's Ark. . .Religion is no limit for you, fantastic.

2nd, 4 Points to Kristof Robertson's Really Long Song Title Containing A Lot of Musical Themes. . .The OS was so annoying when I first heard it. . .but it always got stuck in my head, thanks a lot for putting back there darnit.

1st, 5 Points to Peter Anderson's Fisted in the Fine Print. . .In honesty, I was SHOCKED when I first fisted this parody, I mean read this parody, it's so blunt, and to the point type comedy, I was cracking up quite a bit, and though I was a little surprised this wasn't 'whatfreaked' this one was just really really funny and since it was approved for this site, I was more than happy to give it my consideration and eventually my top nod. . .excellent job, and I know see why in your profile you speak so highly of Whatfreaks, clearly you are talented at those type of topics. . .

To all:

I will have to withdraw from the competition for May if it isn't too late to do so. My baby was born the 20th, and all the time I'm not working I have to spend either helping my wife with the baby or the housecleaning, or running errands until she recovers. Since I do not have Internet at home, I have to go to a cabina to get online and my time to do so is very limited.

You can see the good news on http://spotmeows.multiply.com in the "Kathleen" album ;)

Wow!! What a blisteringly awesome selection of tunes this month! They are all so good Im forced to split hairs. But I can only vote for 5 of them so here goes!

1 point  to "I'm In Love With Me" by The Charnster
2 points to "Frohikean Rhapsody" by Wannabemustangjockey
3 points to "Totally Dissed Noah's Arc" by Stuart McArthur

Now its truly down to the wire as Im torn between Kristof Robertson's and Phil Alexander's entry this month. Both are sooooooooo good, but after reading and reading and reading my verdict has to be......

4 points to "Hardrockhiphoppunkyfunkyemotechnodiscocountry" by Kristof Robertson.
5 points to "Free Tits" by Phil Alexander

Both parodies by Kristof and Phil were equally excellent but it was just Phil's job that did it for me in the end. Anyway good luck to all of you!

Jason.

Another excellent month with a wide range of chuckleworthy material, including some of the best works (IMHO) submitted by certain authors.
Here goes:

5 Pts: Agri's Mac Daddy...I loved this SO much!
4 pts: Phils Fee-less Funbags. What can I say? mmmmmm...breasts...... ;)
3 pts: Stu's OTT OT; Bonnie Tyler has never been funnier
2 pts: Chris F's comedic campaign. Victory!

And, in a verry tough call that almost involved coin tossing;

1 pt to McKludge's demanding little ditty

Highly commended to Matty and his and his Idol epic

Well done everyone!

First of all, I'd like to withdraw from this month's contest if I can, with apologies to those who sent any points my way.  Otherwise, I acknowlege that I'm simply disqualified, with the same apologies.  What was supposed to be a quick trip to visit family a couple of states away went horribly awry, and I failed to take my laptop and didn't get home until past 1:00 AM today, server time.  I finished reading parodies and commenting about two hours later, and narrowed it down to a Top 7, but fell asleep before getting a chance to determine their final order.  That has now been done, and here are the votes I would have cast:

5 pts.  -  Kristof's multi-crossover music artists
4 pts.  -  Stuart and his Ark's wrath management issues
3 pts.  -  Matthias and his ode to (against?) everyone's favorite judge
2 pts.  -  wannabemustangjockey, who knows that the truth is out there
1 pt.   -  Phil Alexander's social commentary on the #1 reason for the Internet's popularity

Honorable mentions go to Agrimorfee's Mac geek and Dave's stinky bus line.

I would also like to point out that one more minor clarification in the contest rules may be in order, with respect to withdrawing from the contest.  People who are disqualified are not eligible to participate in the SOTM contest the next month, but what about people who state that they would like to withdraw?  Does the ability to withdraw exist?  If so, does it have to be done prior to the first vote being cast, prior to the voting deadline, prior to the results being posted, or before some other event or time on the contest's monthly timeline?  I have no idea whether this has been established by precedent, having only participated in three contests including this one, but it's not spelled out in the rules as far as I could see.  In the absence of such a distinction being in place, I would prefer to withdraw and not be declared ineligible to participate next month, but of course will accept whatever decision is made.

In any case, congrats to all of this month's winners.

Thanks,
Chris

I hate to say this, Chris, but I don't think you can withdraw from a competition AFTER it's officially ended....I think it's almost definitely a DQ. Which sucks, coz I would've got 5 pts from you! (grrrrr  :)).

As for a withdrawal rule, I'm pretty sure there isn't one, but I think there needs to be. There will be occasions when real life gets in the way, and people have to pull out. It wouldn't be an issue (withdrawal simply could mean forfeit of points gained) except that a DQ means ineligibilty for the next SOTM, where a withdrawal shouldn't. So contestants should have the option to withdraw (for genuine reasons) without losing their right to enter in the next contest.
However, it also doesn't seem fair that people who vote for a withdrawee have their vote squandered....so there's no totally equitable solution.

My suggestion would be this: as most people tend to vote in the last half of the month, that a cut-off date be set 2 weeks before the end of the comp...withdraw before this date, and you only lose your accrued points for the month. Withdraw after this date, and unfortunately it's a DQ.

I realise this is quite arbitrary and doesn't seem at all satisfactory, but it's the best I could come up with: it's unfair, but at least it's equally unfair to both withdrawee and voter. It would be hoped that the rule doesn't have to be invoked often...as people who enter SOTM tend to take it seriously and would only withdraw for very good reasons.

Which leaves me with one final comment...the later you leave your voting, the more likely it is something may go wrong. I'm probably more guilty than most for leaving it til the 11th hour, and make a solemn promise to mend my ways (or at least try to!)

Oh, and Chris....thanks for the 5 points (sob.. :\'()

My squabble with this is simply that, it does affect who already voted and not everyone posts in the last half of the month, a couple of months ago a similar scenario happened with Phil Alexander. . .his withdraw made it to where none of the last half of the voters picked his song and were able to give the points to others who were able to vote. . .while those who voted earlier had no way of correcting votes. . .the only way I would be ok with the idea for a new rule like this is if there were a rule allowing those who have already voted to choose a new 5th place song (optionally of course), when someone does legitimately withdraw prior to a commencement of voting. . .That may only be my opinion of course--but when something happens and one can't get their vote in--but some have already voted for said contestant, their votes have basically gone by the-way side when many (I know at least in my case) have had to make tough cuts on contentestants that had they known one of their top 5 was pulling out. . .they could have awarded the other contestants.  I agree it should be mentioned in the rules, but I also think that when someone who pulls out has already earned points, those people who voted for him/her should be able to move everyone who was below them up one spot in their ranks and pick one more song for 5th. . .because not voting in time and withdrawing have the same effect on those who've already voted, nullifying points. . .so that's just my opinion, if there is no DQ to those who withdraw and just a point forfeit, then similarly those who DID vote should not have their points go to waste. . .I personally have no problem with that idea, but I think that if DQ is removed for some cases, we also have to make an effort to allow those who were affected by said withdraw to award points to those who do plan on completing the round entered.

Thanks,
Chris

There are two issues here.  The first one's easy imo.

Like Kristof, I would also love to take your 4 points Chris, but there actually is a precedent - ie. all the people who have missed the final deadline in the past.  They've all been disqualified.  If they could simply have claimed "withdrawal" after the contest has finished in order to avoid disqualification for next month, all would have done so.

It's commendable that you actually did comment and vote after the contest was finished, which brings enormous goodwill on you, but I'm sure the dozens of previous people in your position who were disqualified would get annoyed.

As for withdrawals, I reckon keep it simple - no such thing.  Once the contest has started, you're an entrant.  Easy.  The only way out is to disqualify yourself.  Although I did like Kristof's compromise solution I broadly agree with BA Dave - it muddies the waters.  If others agree with Kristof and think there should be an option, I would propose "you cannot withdraw from the comp (avoiding disqualification for the nest comp) once the first votes have been cast" which was one of the options Chris suggested.

and back to Chris - that is huge bad luck mate - yours was a wonderful entry and deserved all its votes - hopefully we'll see you in all the remaining SOTMs :)

Congrats to whomever won this SOTM - looks like Kristof at this point, and to his two podium mates...

Withdrawing from SOTM is the same as a DQ - same with voting after the month ends. I agree with Stu it's commendable that Chris F did comment on all entries and vote, albeit not in time. And MM gave a very good reason as well for withdrawing.

In the future, announcing a withdrawal after the voting starts should not be allowed at all IMO - it allows those who would have voted for that entry to effectively change their vote (which is also against the rules) and for others possibly cause irritation for wasting votes.

By the way, what happened to all the rules proposed in the entry thread? I didn't see them approved, shot down, voted on, nor in this voting thread.  ???

much as I'd like to see Kristof take out his 46th (or is that 146th) SOTM Gold Medal, I would not go so far as to disqualify myself to aid the cause, Jack ;)

also, I can post the results Matthias, if you're a bit under the hammer

I don't blame you a bit, Stu, and congrats on the win.

Regarding the whole issue of withdrawal from SOTM, I've thought about it and must agree with Stu's position, as well as Red Ant's.  Announcing a withdrawal should have to be done in the voting thread before the first vote has been cast, in which case it wouldn't be treated as a disqualification and the contestant would remain eligible to participate the next month.  Any withdrawal after the first vote should not be announced at all, because it has the potential to create an unfair playing field in which some voters were able to remove the participant's entry from consideration while others were not.  Instead, it would be handled as a simple DQ at the end of the month when the participant fails to vote.  In addition to being more fair to the voters, this is also better for the participant, because if he or she has a change of heart (or circumstances) before the end of the month, nothing has been announced so there's still the option to comment and vote before the deadline, and thereby remain active in the current month's contest and eligible for the next month's.

Given that I won't be eligible to participate in the June SOTM, I would very much appreciate feedback and critique on the WOTEF parody that I had planned to enter.  Amiright was having stability problems when I posted it, so I don't know how long it was on the "new parodies" list while the site was actually up.  It's at http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/gordonlightfoot96.shtml, and thanks in advance to anyone who has time to comment.

Thanks,
Chris

5 Points to Peter Anderson's Fisted in the Fine Print. . .In honesty, I was SHOCKED when I first fisted this parody, I mean read this parody, it's so blunt, and to the point type comedy, I was cracking up quite a bit, and though I was a little surprised this wasn't 'whatfreaked' this one was just really really funny and since it was approved for this site, I was more than happy to give it my consideration and eventually my top nod.

Thanks Dave!

Hmm... Once again I find myself with the strange result of only one vote, but that vote being a 5! Maybe I should change my tagline to tie in with Chucky's site theme, maybe something like "pleasing amirighters, one at a time!"  :D

OK, fair enough...looking back at my suggestion, I can see that it would just create further complications, which we don't need. I would support the idea of a legitimate withdrawal (no DQ) if it is done before the first vote; in that situation, nobody gets hurt. Otherwise, if you enter, you've got to see it through.

Congrats to whomever won this SOTM - looks like Kristof at this point, and to his two podium mates...

I don't know HOW you came up with that result, Jack....but I sure like Red Ant Arithmetic! Alas, twas not me....

I popped this into Ages, yes, Dave. But this song has nothing to do with Grease (movie or musical). All things considered, no big deal. Thanks.  8)

Just read it and commented, Chris, and I can see why you're disappointed that it can't be entered.  However, this is where the ABC comp steps in - what you miss out on in SOTM, you get a second chance with, in the ABCs.

ABC4 will be starting shortly.  Just make sure you stick around long enough for us to get up to the "W" round

First, I count all 1st place votes as 10 points, then divide by pi, carry the 4, round up and pull a rabbit from my as... , err, hat - perhaps not the *most* efficient system...

Congrats to Stu then!
