I intend to enter as many of ABC4 as I can! This will require some new parodies (particularly for Numbers and Symbols) but I can handle! To kick off, I shall also enter a Decathlon entry:

Akela!

Was it THAT long ago that I was a boy scout? Somehow  ::) :-\\ I made it to the esteemed heights of 'Patrol leader'. Probably everybody else had died off by then.

I seem to remember that 'Akela' is the head honcho of all the wolves?  ... and that I was in the 'grey pack'.

We had to chant this thing:

"Akela (sounded like ... R---------K------------LA!) .... We'll do our best!
Dyb! Dyb! Dyb!    (Dyb =DO your best).

(Response .. ->) ... We'll Dob! Dob! Dob!  (Dob =Do our best).

Sounds rather quaint now!  :D ;D

yes - exactly - I have the exact same memories, and did that exact same chant

for a minute I thought hey wow, cubs was the same all over the world - and then I checked your profile and discovered you're from Sydney, and only slightly older than myself

and I remember also that we weren't called patrol leaders (I think that was scouts) but sixers - and our second in command was called a seconder - I became sixer of White Six, and had 14 merit badges if I recall - the hardest to earn being "Signals"

and also that when we were "new chums" we had to wear a white scarf to symbolise the white paint that Mowgli had to wear alone in the jungle, to see if he could survive, after which he was welcomed into the cub pack (meaning we were given our real uniforms and scarves and a shiny new silver woggle to replace the uncool "new chum" plastic one)

Akela IS the name of the cub pack leaders worldwide though, if you believe this reference...

Hi Stu

Well, I live in Sydney now ... but I was a Boy Scout in England, where I grew up. Used to head down Guildford way ... around 25 miles South of London to go camping and so on. I absolutely loved sitting around camp fires at night, singing songs, roasting marshmallows , and so on. Just loved staring into those dancing flames / 'fire gazing'!. During the day ... I'd be particularly enthusiastic about wood hunting expeditions for the nightlly fires .. and would bring back incredible amounts / trees ... to ensure it would be as big / burn as long as possible! I had quite a reputation in that area .... my fellow scouts / scoutmaster were in awe!

Also seem to remember having one of my first smokes of a cigarette on a ladder ... getting so dizzy ... and nearly falling off the thing.

Our Scoutmaster ... 'Akela' ... was quite liberal minded ... and I seem to remember he would lead us on nightly trips of several miles to a pub .. where a few of us would get stuck into some nice alcoholic ciders!

Aah... ! Those were the days!

:) ;D

P.S. ... Looked at your profile too (since). I see you're from Melbourne.

Some of what you've said is ringing a bell .. maybe we used the term 'sixers' and 'seconder' too ... I seem to remember having an 'off-sider' .. (fortunately ... not too many 'off' ciders !  :D ).

Yes ... we called that leatherish knot for the red scarf a 'woggle' too. Wondering if that's politically correct these days...  :-\\ ;D

Not sure why I left in the end .... maybe I thought I'd outgrown my shorts?  :D

Anyway ... 'Bob a job' week was kind of enjoyable too ... where we'd go into stranger's homes .... and offer to do chores for them to get a 'shilling. Sometimes shopping, sometimes cleaning for old folks. Can't remember, but I think it was for charitable causes ... although these days ... I tend to think 'Charity begins at home'.

Hey! Can anyone on this site spare a dime?  :D ;D :D
