Subject: October SOTM Voting!!! (Votes Totaled)

Written By: Matthias on 11/08/07 at 1:45 pm

Note to new participants: Welcome, and good luck. Please read all guidelines carefully. Especially, please make sure to read all the entries and vote by the end of the month. The SOTM is not so much a contest as a feedback exchange. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, either in this thread or via personal message. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

This is my 2nd month as host. . .thank you for continuing to allow me to host the prestigeous contest.

~~Vote by replying to this thread with your five favorites in order:
1st choice- 5 points
2nd place- 4 points
3rd place- 3 points
4th place- 2 points
5th place- 1 point.

~~You're not allowed to vote for your own song.

~~Once you've posted a vote, you're not allowed to change it.

~~Voting continues until the last day of the month ends.

~~Anyone who's participated in a SOTM contest may vote.

~~By entering, you are agreeing to read and comment on all the other entries and vote.

~~Anyone who enters but does not both comment on all entries and vote by the end of the month is disqualified and may not participate next month.

~~In the event of a tie, the parody with the most first place votes wins.
If it's still tied, the parody with the most second place votes wins.
If it's still tied, a brief playoff round will be held.
All participants will have the first week of the month to choose one favorite from among the tied entries.
Tiebreaker voting is strongly encouraged but not required. On the eighth day the one with the most votes wins.

~~Any entrant whose votes don't show a timestamp prior to midnight on the last day of the month (ie. according to the "inthe00's meantime" clock as it appears BEFORE you log in - not a timezone corrected version) is disqualified, without exception.

Yes! Big shocker! 2 days before voting closes, and I'm not doing this at the last minute! Busy, busy guy that i am, better do this now while I can.

This was a tough round but I'll have to go with these votes...

5 pts: Peter's F-ing Fenomenal parody
4 pts: Jeff's ugly side
3 pts: Dave's bad hair day
2 pts: Alex's model student
1 pt : Guy's swimming with the fishes

5 points: "The Fundamentalist's Song".
I have a soft spot for this type of pun-damental rants, and nobody does it better than our own Philbo, here in top form!

4 points: "Lola (the ex-wife of this dude I met)"
This is a hard song to do (I've tried) and here it was pulled of just great!

3 points: "My porn"
Short and sweet, just like I kept telling my ex-girlfriend it should be…

2 points: " Lyin' Spies?"
A Godsend, I went and cancelled my Moldavian mail order brides after having read this

1 Point: " Witch's Brew"
Home cocking just like Ma did it…

Special kudos to Jeff Ruben who made the list on funny but was bumped a few notches on pacing (though admittedly I agonized over how much emphasis to put on that after having heard the recording and that it worked as karaoke), to Alex J the newbie who probably would have made the list had he done the full song, to "you buttered your butt" for the wackiest title ever to appear in SOTM, to Guy for making a comeback, to etc, etc, etc… Effing good stuff all over the line this month! :)

Congratulations to Peter, Stu and Phil!

This looked like a really close SOTM - I can't believe the gold medal parody wound up a DQ - no newbie has ever won his first SOTM, and no one has ever forfeited a gold in SOTM.

By tiebreak rules, I tally Peter with 3 first place votes to Stu's, uh, less than three first places votes, so Peter is first (again) and Stu is 2nd (again).

Ahem, don't really know what to say here since I apparently won but didn't really win, or shouldn't have, or what to call it, and if and how congrats to the other medallists are in order etc…

BTW, has anyone heard from Alex, why he didn't vote?

Anyway, I think I oughta say something so I'll let you in on the behind the scenes story, this little alliterated ditty of F-words was an idea that has been in the tube even longer than "I am a tired runner in a super-ultramarathon", though I didn't really feel up to really get down to work on it and grooming it until I came up with the idea of failing/bleeping at the end and those injokes on the original song itself, then I knew I could squeeze some fun out of it and that it wouldn't just be a list of random words.

Thanks to all of you for voting it this high and special thanks to Merry and Pippin for giving me the initial idea (check out their parody "Letter B" and my first day K1chyd comment on it back in the summer of 2004):

Peter, Alex didn't vote, which means you DID win regardless of where he may have finished, after all his vote may have changed his 'victory' anyway. . .Alex, your entry was very strong, and I hope you enter again in the future--but why didn't you vote afterall?

Shades of the F1 season, here... though in that case the newbie *didn't* win it on a techicality, rather than t'other way around.  Seems very harsh on Alex (not to mention it that robbed me of my favourite fourth place), but it wouldn't be fair on all the others who've been DQ'd for it not to stand.  Any odds he didn't read the full T&C, so simply didn't realize what was expected...

Anyway thanks, all - it was a really rather tight one, wasn't it?  Well done Stu and especially Peter for doubling up, back-to-back wins (with what was definitely the most original entry this month).  On the hat-trick...

ALEX!!!

I mean, how frustrating is that? I dare say Alex doesn't yet know that he has thrown away a gold medal on his first attempt.

Any odds he didn't read the full T&C, so simply didn't realize what was expected...

I'd put a tenner on that, Phil....it's so rare that a noob does SO well in SOTM, that this scenario rarely pops up....but for me, it's infuriating to give precious votes away and see them wasted.

(not to mention it that robbed me of my favourite fourth place

It's actually quite comfy here....the seat's warm, but why does it smell of Guinness and used PC parts?  :D

Congrats to Peter....like Abba, IKEA and Volvo, a Swedish invasion...but far funnier!
Stu: What can I say? I think that's 9 podium finishes out of 10 this year...I'm not sure even Spaff could lay claim to such consistency; I certainly can't!! Well done again, mate.
Phil: Twas my fave of the month, so I'm chuffed it never ended up in fourth place.

Sorry 'bout that - shouldn't have eaten all those cables, but I was hungry and it looked like spaghetti.  I was surprised by the smell of Guinness, too, given that I hadn't drunk any for a while... maybe it's 'cause I'm a little stout myself.

Congrats Peter - because as Dave pointed out, and a point that I hadn't immediately thought of, the twist here is that Alex almost certainly would not have been the winner IF he HAD voted - because he only had to put you into ANY ONE of his 5 slots and he would have come second to you, and it would be hard to not put your parody in the top 5.

Stu's, uh, less than three first places votes.....

You are totally correct to point that out Jack.  My parody didn't score a single 5-vote so it deservedly comes second to Peter's, the logic being that the 5-vote is open-ended - eg. a masterpiece like "Shakespearian Pie" might put the rest of the field to shame but can only ever beat the second best by one point.  The system works imo.

Congrats also to Phil, who was also my clear 5-pointer this month - it would have been a travesty for that masterpiece not to podium-finish.

Thanks for all my votes everyone, and like Peter, I'd just like to comment on my entry, as some people said they thought it was a bit weird.  I know you're not supposed to explain humour, but what I was trying to do was a nudge-to-the-reader piece - the story wasn't funny at all and wasn't meant to be - I was hoping that the "spectacle" of watching a parodist desperately trying to contrive endless "-ola" rhymes just to make a parody scan to the end would be funny because of its sheer contrivedness - so it was a bit self-referential - it would probably work better as a recording, because I could then then have laboured that gag

I thought it was a masterpiece, in fact, this is the first time in awhile, all three of the podium finishers--were in my top 5, I got it:)

and yes Max, that is exactly what happened (sort of--since we really don't know what he would have voted--which likely would have resulted in either Stu or Peter winning anyhow. . .with him finishing third)  . . .but regardless, yes he did, I just hope that he's ok, and checks in to see it---because it may encourage him to join another round and make sure to mark his calendar to remember to vote.

Quite a close one with all it's ties, DQ's, and technicalities.

Actually, you've put your finger on one of the reasons I like this site and these comps so much.  I like the way the SOTMs have their own life and legends - a bit like the Super Bowls, or our Aussie Rules Grand Finals, where it's not just about the winners, but the themes, newbie entrants, tiny dramas, etc.  Each SOTM contests develops its own personality.  There would be a lot of SOTMs where you could describe them as "the one where..." like they do with Friends episodes

who can remember "the one where Tippy Girl (was that her name?) caused all those problems, then ended up not voting anyway"
who can remember "the one where poomaster tried to lower the tone"
who can remember "the one where the M M-G craze was at its peak"
who can remember "the one where the BOG craze was at its peak"
who can remember "the one where We Didn't Satrt The Fire was at its peak"
who can remember "the one where Arwen had it won after just 8 sets of votes or so"
who can remember "the one where JD got his first win"?
who can remember "the one where 2nz missed out on a podium-finish by countback

etc.

Are there any more anyone can think of that can be summed up by one unique ingredient?

Congrats Peter - because as Dave pointed out, and a point that I hadn't immediately thought of, the twist here is that Alex almost certainly would not have been the winner IF he HAD voted - because he only had to put you into ANY ONE of his 5 slots and he would have come second to you, and it would be hard to not put your parody in the top 5.

Well, if so the same goes for yours Stu, one point for just any of the two of ours would have separated them and possibly so in favour of yours. Now having said that I draw to open mind what might have subconsciously caused my initial uncertainty of whether or not the results should be as they are, despite me knowing about this DQ rule, that Arwen's parody received shared victory with Kristof's in the last SOTY despite her not voting herself, a similar situation where just one point from her would have given it to KR alone, but then I remembered that there is no mandatory voting in SOTY.

I'll also take comfort in the fact that we might be doing Alex a favour (sic!), starting off with a win it can only go downhill from there. No, he should work his way up the hard way like I've (just realised that I've) done; a fifth, a fourth, a bronze, another bronze, a silver, getting overconfident and cocky and knocked down to a long period of mostly in the five to ten area, then another silver, a gold, and finally a gold handed over on a plate just for being in time!  :P

...ah, the elephant in the room as been mentioned

I totally agree, Peter - I was VERY uncomfortable about that.  In fact that is the single reason I changed the ABC3 Parody Of The Tournament voting to nominations, followed by an Academy-Awards-style choice of 5 top nominations, where you had to have nominated for your parody to be eligible.  It was very possible that Arwen would have given given Kristof a place in her top ten, and then Kristof's parody would have been Parody Of The Year.  It's not Arwen's fault (except for her not voting) that there were such extreme consequences to her inaction, but it definitely highlighted a flaw in the non-compulsory voting rule.

And that's why this situation struck a chord with me too

Actually, you've put your finger on one of the reasons I like this site and these comps so much.  I like the way the SOTMs have their own life and legends - a bit like the Super Bowls, or our Aussie Rules Grand Finals, where it's not just about the winners, but the themes, newbie entrants, tiny dramas, etc.  Each SOTM contests develops its own personality.  There would be a lot of SOTMs where you could describe them as "the one where..." like they do with Friends episodes

who can remember "the one where Tippy Girl (was that her name?) caused all those problems, then ended up not voting anyway"
who can remember "the one where poomaster tried to lower the tone"
who can remember "the one where the M M-G craze was at its peak"
who can remember "the one where the BOG craze was at its peak"
who can remember "the one where We Didn't Satrt The Fire was at its peak"
who can remember "the one where Arwen had it won after just 8 sets of votes or so"
who can remember "the one where JD got his first win"?
who can remember "the one where 2nz missed out on a podium-finish by countback

etc.

In Friends, I really was looking forward to "The one in which they learned the basics of English grammar"

Up here we make discreet excuses for our women when they are late, but I'm sure she'll appreciate that aussie proverb(?) compliment to conspicuous and fabulous resident women too, especially if she's a republican…  :P

extreme consequences? Nahhh.....;-). I still got to hold the SOTY trophy (although I had to push Arwen out of the way...) which was way cool. You could never make SOTY compulsory voting, so at the end of the day, it only represents the opinions of those motivated enough to trawl through 39 parodies and select their faves- it's a nice honour, but not something to break a sweat over

cutie_girl did vote, although I seem to remember that you and are we almost at the point of placing bets against that happening.  ;)

And I believe pm entered the same contest.

who can remember the one where "a following month entry was allowed into SOTM due to a loophole in the rules"?

Every SOTM is probably "unique" to each person as far as how memorable it is. I do remember the ones I quoted, but I doubt anyone but me remembers my first medal, barely edging out a certain unknown, extra terrestrial "Spaff.com" writing team in a double tiebreaker for the bronze.

You got all the SOTMs that I remember in general - just to be complete (and slightly off topic for a moment):

The ABCs:

who can remember the one where (WCRTOW) "Leo Jay scored 60 points"
(WCRTOW) "three parodists finished in a tie for first place"
(WCRTOW) "the one where there was only three entrants"
(WCRTOW) "Arwen was DQed/not DQed depending on what time zone the board clock was adjusted to"

...hmmm, can't seem to remember any more at the moment.

Sorry Guys! Completely forgot to vote! Went on holiday last month plus I had a lot of other stuff on and it completely slipped my mind. I'm sure I'll get a win another day, well maybe.
