Hard choice this month.. do I go with the funny or the technically better parody?

Possibly contraversial.. but I'm going to have to submit:

Wow.  Some great stuff so far.  Just a clarification on the rules of entry.  If (when) I enter my song, do I  comment on each of the songs in the thread in some way or another by clicking on the link and leaving a comment on the original page or by commenting here in the thread?  I guess whichever way, I'll throw in my song now, but I'd still appreciate clarification.  Thanks.

Leave your comment on the original parody page. Most folks add "(SOTM)" as an indicator that they have indeed made commentary for the contest. You can start your comments now, but most people wait until the actual Voting Thread is posted--you can't post your final votes anywhere else before it's posted anyway. See previous SOTM Voting Threads (or ABC Voting Threads) to get an idea how it works out.

Good luck!

Rule changes may be suggested by any participant in their entry post. Changes are made only when a majority of that month's voters specify a "yes" vote along with their contest votes.

Every now and then we have this discussion about how to encourage parodies of new songs, the spread of originals upon which SOTM medalists are based may not be as limited as often stated then, but then again parodies to "Be Our Guest" have medaled 12 times (sic!) over four years and four months so there's for sure some good arguments for the objection. It may also be a factor behind the declining number of entrants in the SOTM, we've come from a record of 26 (or was it 28) down to 12 in the last round, and albeit three out of four winners this year has been to originals that has never been the basis for a medaling parody before it's still a fact that more and more contestants are based upon the big 7 or the big 40 or some other big safe, and I fear that might scare of young parody writers starting out to contemporary rap and/or stuff from the current billboard list etc.

I would therefore like to suggest a rule change (well, technically it's not a rule change, because the voting process will not be affected, voting will go on as usual, it has more to do with what we do with the results, but it should be voted upon anyway methinks). I like to institute a fourth "medal", one given to the best placed parody based upon a new song. Now since we'll never be able to fully agree on what constitutes a new song I also suggest the criteria for that simply being "an original song that so far never has been the basis for a SOTM medal". It's not a perfect solution for endorsing really new songs, but I think it's a definition we can all agree on, one that as time goes on will disqualify more and more of the old standards for this special medal, and most important it's self-referent to the SOTM itself.

With a little bit of fast copy, paste and alphabetical sorting (and some necessary editing so that different titles for songs like "Major-General" show up next to each other) I've written this list of the 156 medal's originals so far. As said above the spread is bigger than one might think but there's some big gravitons to be seen.

As said above I want such a fourth medal to be given in each round to the best placed parody based upon "an original song that so far never has been the basis for a SOTM medal". Currently that would mean all songs on that list and as new songs medal they too will be out by going up on the list from there on.

I also like to suggest the name "The Golden Nugget Bullet Treasure Award", unless someone has a better/snappier name suggestion.

Now all fancy arguments aside it will in reality probably often be a fourth place medal anyway, but often is not the same as always and occasionally the honour will go to someone further down the normal voting score. Looking at how the fallout should have been so far this year we get:

April: "It must be Elmo" by Agrimorfee" (4th)
March: "Churnalicious" by Below Average Dave (4th)
February: "You Can't Throw A Party" by Phil Alexander (5th)
January: "Full of Himself Rhapsody" Below Average Dave (4th)

The fact that a parody set to BoRap has never medaled might not be my strongest argument, but I like to think that at least the other three are examples in my favour.

And if you're in favour of the general idea I'd also like your opinion of whether or not we should go retroactive back to January this year and give these four parodies the "The Golden Nugget Bullet Treasure Award" as suggested above.

I like it to be honest. . .4th place is often so close, and I don't only say that just because I happen to be two of the four, sometimes it's nice to see new songs do so well, but all to often that's not the case, I will place this rule change suggestion on the ballot, and if adapted, it will be retroactively used for the first four months.  For historical purposes, only the top 3 will be considered podium songs though, but entrance into SOTY I think is well earned.

And to be fair to each month, I do think it should be this entire year so that all month's are represented evenly in the SOTY

Geeze...I was kinda hoping to enter my Be Our Guest parody. I thought I was following some kind of tradition here...

This rule change would not affect the podium entrants, it'd just give a bonus entry to the highest ranked non-podium song that took on something new, song's like Be Our Guest have done very well because of their popularity as an OS and because many people have been able to turn it into an amazing parody. . .I think Peter's rule change would only increase activity, and the amount of people taking on new songs--I don't think "Be Our Guest"'s legacy can really be questioned. . .12 podiums speaks for itself, and I don't think we've seen the last of those to be honest.

"Wannabe Breakin' Somethin" to Michael Jackson's "Wannabe Startin' Something" as my official entry over my Geeklemma and Pee On,

Also, Red Ant has asked me to enter his Dirty Laundry as he won't be in time for the deadline to enter.

Invisible Boy: What Dave just said captures my thoughts about it perfectly, the big seven will still be the big seven and I'm sure parodies to them will continue to do good, if for nothing else the world is still spinning and new objects to write about and/or angle themes towards keep popping up so we'll never ever drain them completely.

So it's all about giving the veterans a little extra encouragement to possibly go with the less known OS when having more than one to choose between, and giving young newbies a little extra encouragement to enter at all in the first place and with that a fair shot at recognition before they've worked up the experience to tackle those long, long songs.

I'm not against your additional idea here Dave but from the top of my head I think we should NOT put an SOTY angle on this on the ballot just yet. Maybe later if the first suggestion passes. From the top of my head I'd say why not, but then again SOTY is already 39 songs big and would grow to 51 with that. Maybe something like the wild card round should take place first. Maybe those 12 songs could have their own final. Maybe other ideas might pop up before the end of year. Let's get back to that later, IF the initial suggestion survives the vote.

I agree with Dave on this one. If we don't enter these songs into SOTM when we're giving them recognition, because of their obscurity of original song (Against the grain, if not obscure) then we should have the same state of mind when it's with SOTY as well, because it would be pointless to recognize these indivisuals and not allow them enterance into SOTY. What I think needs to be done is gotten rid of Wildcard, I know that it's a big deal to most people who haven't gotten into SOTY yet, and their last chance of victory, but a competition that doesn't allow all people to enter isn't really fair in my opinion. This year has been crazy, because the usual people who enter Wildcard (Conquerer, Me, Jack Wilson, and Jeff Reuben) all have podiumed so there would really be nobody left to enter Wildcard.

Thanks, Dave, for entering me this round. I didn't think I'd get back into town in time to do it myself.

I like Peter's idea (and karma for all the research), but I do have some issues with it. Although I've only been in one SOTM this year, ISTM this idea would have been much more, um, "effective", had it been suggested a year or more ago: I haven't seen a lot of the "staple" songs entered into SOTM this year.

That aside, the list is not that big, though there is the possibility that a 6th or 7th place song would get "The Golden Nugget Bullet Treasure Award" over a 4th place finish of a song that has already won a medal, regardless of how many medals, or, more importantly, how many times an OS has been entered into SOTM (or submitted to AmiRight). "Be Our Guest" has twelve medals to its name, but I think that number also represents the total BOG entries into SOTM. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a BOG parody has never not medaled in SOTM.

The recognition is great, but w/o inclusion into SOTY, well, it's not a meaningless medal, but it would mean less, if you get what I'm thinking. Wildcard would not be eliminated either unless there were three or less entrants, who would get an automatic pass into SOTY. That would expand SOTY voting from 39 songs to 51.

Edit: What Peter said. I've been working in the heat too much this week...

There seems to be two goals here: one is increasing participation. This new medal won't hurt that, but I don't think it'll do much to help it either.

The second goal, recognizing the highest finishing non-entered/written-to-death/glued-to-the-podium OS/parody, is a great idea to me.

That's true, three out of four winners are to songs that has never medaled before, and if that trend continues there's no need for my idea. However there could be a correlation between the declining number of entrants and that trend, as it's easier to stand out in a small crowd, when/if we get back up to twenty entries we'll also see a rise in the number of parodies to "old" songs methinks.

Thanks for the karma BTW but it really belongs mostly to Claude Prez and Stuart McArthur, I copied from the existing medalists list that Cladue started and Stu now maintains, pasted into Word, took out what wasn't needed and sorted alphabetically. All in all less than halv an hours work, thanks to the two of them.

That part really needs a better idea, but as you say yourself this one will at least not hurt that.

I'm still not really happy with the name ("The Golden Nugget Bullet Treasure Award"), maybe a simple "The Unplaced Original Song Encouragement Award" is a better name?

How about "The New Frontier Parody of the Month"

What is the psychology of people not entering SOTM anyway? Because they are afraid that their quality does not even begin to match with veterans...not because they think a song they parodied isn't popular enough. I dunno, whatever you guys want.

There's basically three types of writers who don't enter the contests: daily amiright veterans (John, malcolm AFW, alvin, Michael P, etc) who write a lot of good work - there's been many a month where had one or more of them entered it would have changed the podium finishes. For whatever reason none of them have ever entered the contests.

The second group is all the ultra newbies, and perhaps 5% of them even bother to respond to or give feedback, let alone get into the messageboard and the contests.

The third group is the non-daily (or "infrequent") amiright veterans, some of which enter contests when they can and the others who have been invited countless times and still decline. IMHO, only this third group is going to have a shot at raising the number of entrants into SOTM again.

The downward trend in contest numbers is not as bad as it seems compared to the drop off in submissions to amiright. There's a lot of authors who used to be regular contest contributors who have either cut back entries or who have taken more or less a permanent break from writing and/or contests.

I blame Bush for it all.  :D

I doubt it's permanent... in the words of Culture Club, "they come and go"

Re Peter's idea, I do like it, given how unusual it is for songs that aren't fairly substantial to hit the top 3 (I'm afraid I can't bring myself to use "medal" as a verb).. though I am very surprised no Bo Rap song has made it (goes off to check back catalogue, and finds out that my two Bo Rap parodies predate SOTM); I wouldn't want to vote on backdating it, as I have a vested interest ;)

We could call it the "Original Song Contribution Award Reward", but I think that acronym might have been taken..

I did plan to submit this for SOTM. I have no excuse for being late other than I lost track of the dates. If I can get it in...great.  If not I understand.

Acronyms can be a bugger, surely took the wind out of my very first idea: The Nonetheless Astute Unplaced Song Encouragement Award...  :o

Then again, it's probably not taken...

I figured I'd leave it unamed and we'll vote on that in a separate thread if it is passed.  I really hope it is, nothing against the classics--but it's nice to see new songs get targeted.  As the person who initiated the "epic 20" which became the epic 40 with Matthias--I know first hand how it feels to be doing songs that don't seem like they are going to get noticed no matter how well I do on them.  My full support is with this, and if it passes, the following month we'll have a thread to decide what the winners receive, where we can brainstorm (after all--it's only June)

Peter, KARMA for this idea, thanks very much!
