Subject: Hip-Hop Parody Contest Idea

Written By: Blaydeman on 12/11/10 at 7:48 pm

Hello fellow parodists and spoofers! I'm Blaydeman. If you're like me and enjoy listening and parodying rap music, then this is the contest for you! It's called the Hip-Hop Specialist contest. This contest would be run similarly to the Artistry and SOTM contests, except it will highlight rap and hip-hop artists. Every month a new Rap/Hip-hop artist will be randomly selected for one contest. A list of songs that qualify for the contest will be posted in the entry thread, but more may be added through suggestions.

General Rules:
1. Entry must be submitted by replying to the entry thread by the set deadline or it is ineligible for the contest.
2. All entrants must read and comment on every entry. If not done then the entrant is disqualified.
3. All entrants must vote by replying to a seperate voting thread to the contest. This must be done before the voting deadline or the entrant will be disqualified.
4. Votes will be cast using a point system. You pick your favorite 5 parodies and place them 1-5. 1st (5pts), 2nd (4pts), 3rd (3pts), 4th (2pts), 5th (1pt).
5. You may not vote for your own parody.
6. At the end of the voting period, the points will be tallied, and the parody with the most points wins.
7. If there is a points tie, the parody that go tthe most first place votes will be the winner. And so on and so forth in the case of multiple ties.
Keep in mind, these rules may be adjusted through suggestions and comments.

This is just an idea. If you're interested, reply to this thread. If enough people reply, we can start it up as soon as possible  :), Hope to hear from a lot of people soon.

This sounds an awful lot like Artistry and we already have a selection of Hip Hop and Rap artists in Artistry to come (as well as a selection from other genres). Not sure how this one is going to fly.

Thats kind of his idea behind it. . .Artistry is mostly rock artists. . .theres actually only one pure rap artist left (and she is a bonus round I added to make the rounds an even 140). . .so I don't know, personally I see it as a challenge--the question is actually more, are there enough people willing to take on the genres of rap and hip hop to do the contest.  .  .

I, as everyone knows, love a good challenge now and then, whether I'll have time to take on a rap or hip hop song every two weeks is another question--then there's also the fact that I have a good number of rap/hip hop songs already written; we'll see I can't promise round to round participation, but I'd certainly participate whenever an artist comes up that I am familiar with--as I said I like a challenge, and this would be a pretty 'epic' contest.

yah like Dave said, the point is to make it like the Artistry contest. I've gone back in the archives and looked at past Artistry contests and only a handfull of hip-hop/rap artsists have been selected. I know there are a lot of people out there who enjoy parodying rap music and this would just expand the diversity of the contests. The only rap/hip-hop genre artists I've seen in the Artistry contests are Usher, Busta Rhymes, Beastie Boys, Black Eye Peas, Eminem, and Salt-N-Pepa. Not to many compared to the Rock or Pop genre . There are so many more great rap/hi-hop artist to do! What about Nelly, LL Cool J, Young MC, Timbaland, Afroman, Akon, Snoop Dogg, etc.? There are so many great artist in the world, I believe they all deserve to be recognized right? It's just an idea, if it doesn't bring enough interest, I won't do it. But I'm sure you've probably done 1 or 2 rap/hip-hop artists, this would just be another way for you to get more feedback on your writing. I think it would be a fun idea.

She? This intrigues me.

As for the contest, I'm all for it, although two weeks may be a little short to do a rap parody, cuz they're hard sons of bitches.

Yah some of them are pretty difficult. The length of the contest can be changed to whatever people feel is best. I just want to try and expand the diversity of the conests to reach further into the number of different artists this site has on it. Glad ur on board  :). Hopefully a few more people respond so I can get this thing up and running  ;D ;D ;D.

I'm thinking that since you are talking a month to vote, perhaps overlapping vote/entry at the same time. . .so if you have say LL Cool J entry field going, at the same time you could have the round for Lil Kim voting. . .and so on. . .either way I'm in, I like the idea of a challenge, but if you do go through with this make sure you promote it, most of the rap parodists aren't over here as often as they once were, there are actually some parodists who do mostly or only rap, and getting them involved would be a great help to these rounds.

One VERY IMPORTANT thing about nominating artists--this is a mistake I made with Artistry--you may want to limit nominations per person, say only X number of artists can be nominated per person.  The reason artistry is 140 rounds is because I did not have such a limitation, and that's why even though artistry is now --heck even I've lost track in my head and am too lazy to check the thread--rounds in, it still has a--see previous witty input--to go.

We certainly don't want another 140 round mammoth floating around, so I'd recommend placing a policy of each potential entrant can nominate X artists, with you of course filling in the X, unless you like Roman numbers which would make it 10, but that might be a lot, because you know, say 14 people enter and each have ten different artists in mind, well, you get the picture--ARTISTRY MONSTER (I'm sorry Pandora, I didn't mean to open it--really I didn't, stop smacking me on the head with Red Bull-ouch that hurts)

While I like to Get My Write On, and Clean out my parody closet, I don't want to Smack That for a pushing it of 140 rounds, because that might get Jiggy Wit My Brain, and that ain't no phenomenon yo. . .

I do not see either artist--I know there is no "Snoop Dogg" round, he was not nominated

I don't remember Will Smith being on the list either, but if he was, his round must have already passed, because the Artistry list + passed rounds adds up to 140, and I've not altered the list from the original except for two over-sites which you are familiar with--no nominated artist has been removed.

He hasn't already passed and I nominated Will Smith for sure so he should be on there unless you accidentally deleted him. I mean it's been 4 years since we started so you may have.

OMG LOL Dave, you're hilarious! YAh, that's a good idea. Honestly I don't know how long I want the contest to be. I haven't decided whether I should have a set number of rounds and total the points through ll rounds of do each round as individual contests. Just another kink to work out, but it sounds like people would be interested in doing this. I also enjoy good challenges  ;).

I made a point to save the list so I could keep of track of who we have left, and I can tell you that there isn't a Will Smith round. You might be confusing him with the upcoming Willie Nelson round.

Well I think we should get the ball rolling on this one. I think we should start. So I'll pick the first artist then once more people join more can be nominated with a max of 5 nominations per person. I'll wait to actually start up the contest until January, so things aren't so hectic for our writers. I think I'll probably start the contest off with one of todays biggest rappers....... Jay-Z! So if you guys want to join in, you can start thinking about what Jay-Z song you want to do. Give you guys a little head start ;). Hopefully this thing will muster up some more buzz and get some more people in it.

I need to learn to read before I post stuff...

Narrowing it down to 5 artists is actually pretty tough.

1. Will Smith
2. Limp Bizkit
3. Run DMC
4. Beastie Boys
5. Notorious B.I.G

Limp Bizkit is an upcoming Artistry round...that may be a bit repetitive...so would the Beastie Boys, really...still, it's all up to you.

Ok everyone, I've decided to do a 20 round contest. Each round will be scored individually on the usual 5pt rating scale. At the end of each round the scores will be tallied and I'll post the standings. If your parody is 1st overall in the round, you get 5pts for the overall contest. If your pardoy gets 2nd, you get 4pts for the overll, and so on and so forth.  At the end of the 20 rounds, there will be an unkown artist bonus round. After the bonus round, the overall scores throughout all 20+bonus rounds will be tallied to show an overall winner.
Here's the round breakdown:
Round 1: Jay-Z
Round 2: T.I.
Round 3: LL Cool J
Round 4: Notorious B.I.G.
Round 5: Nelly
Round 6: Missy Elliott
Round 7: Will Smith
Round 8: Run DMC
Round 9: Drake
Round 10: Ludacris
Round 11: Kanye West
Round 12: Flo-Rida
Round 13: Beastie Boys
Round 14: Salt-n-Pepa
Round 15: Snoop Dogg
Round 16: Tupac Shakur
Round 17: B.o.B.
Round 18: MC Hammer
Round 19: 50 Cent
Round 20: Kid Cudi
Bonus: ?

I'll post the first entry thread on January 1st, 2011. I can't wait, this will be fun!

I want Sean Kingston! He and Soulja Boy are the only rap artists I've parodied LOL.

This seems like a very challenging, very interesting contest. I am in a huge slump and hip-hop is not my genre, but I may enter the Beastie Boys round since they're not bad...

And Blaydeman, I was gonna ask whether or not you got your name from the Mega Man robot master Blade Man, but your avatar let me know that. He made me wanna rip my hair out in Mega Man 10.

Hmm, interesting how you got that name. And I will try to join, even though hip-hop isn't really my style of music, I can try to parody it. Heck, I did with Soulja Boy and Sean Kingston, and since the first round is Jay-Z, maybe I can do one of his songs he did with Linkin Park.

I think this list is good. . .MC Hammer is definitely not the best choice for a round in my opinion based on his prolific profile compared to the others, if you do decide you don't want to include artists in the Artistry Competition, there's three artists on the list (one of which is a secret round) so that may not be a good exclusion decision. . .

remember the 50% rule Matthias, featuring Jay-Z is not the same as being 50% Jay-Z and 50% Rihanna--I mean, that kinda breaks the purpose of the contest, Umbrella is not anything like Jay-Z's work and is not representing him, its representing Rihanna, just as Crazy in Love by Beyonce featuring Jay Z, Thong Song by Sisqo featuring Jay-Z or any of his other many featured parts are.

To compete using works where he was not the focus is kind of discrediting his own work and makes it to where too many songs that really aren't his style are represented, again it's up to Bladeyman, but I don't think Umbrella or Crazy in Love are really representative of Jay Z

The work Jay-Z Did with Linkin Park is an example of a collaboration, where he was an equal part in the final product to Linkin Park. . .that represents his work equal to Linkin Park's in the product, and is a reflection of him as an artist, that to me is an acceptable entry where as Umbrella which is more about Rihanna is not.

For the record, I enjoy Rihanna's work, she just seems to keep popping up here when she really isn't part of the hip hop/rap scene other than as an occasional featured artist alongside a rap star.  She is no more rap in my eyes than Kesha is. . .

Her Wikipedia page classifies her as Hip Hop

Which is why Wikipedia is not accepted as a source for school and research projects

Furthermore, it says R&B first and foremost, according to that same line she is dancehall, dance, pop, and urban--those are all music styles she draws inspiration from, but look up hip hop and try to apply Rihanna to it. . .Hip hop is far from the genre that best describes her, in honesty--I can't name a single song by her that I'd label hip hop before R&B and/or Dance

This is a personal interview from her. . .

11. Being a million-selling dance-pop sensation has its ups and its downs.

8. She didn't like "Pon de Replay" at first. "I thought it sounded like a nursery rhyme," Rihanna said of the infectiously catchy dancehall- and reggae-tinged pop hit

13. Rihanna's musical influences are mostly her age.
"I listened to a lot of R&B and reggae music," Rihanna said of her musical tastes growing up. "Seeing artists like B2K and JoJo come out at a young age really inspired me. If all of these young teenagers could do it, I thought I could, too."

No she isn't. . .and SOS is not rap at all, it is dance/hip hop, but how is SOS rap?????

She is R&B, having hip hop undertones does not make her a hip hop artist any more than having rap undertones makes Blondie a rap artist

It's rap because it rhymes a lot? I don't know... Maybe I don't know rap but I can't stand R&B and I love Rihanna.

TLC sucks! Jennifer Lopez sucks! Monica sucks! Brandy sucks! But I love Rihanna so she can't be R&B...

Jennifer Lopez isn't R&B, she's repetitive which is why you don't like her. . .

Maybe you don't hate R&B as much as you thought, you just don't like the style of R&B Brandy, Monica and TLC put out. . .but Rihanna is R&B, as a fan of hers I have to defend her genre. . .

I think switching MC Hammer for Eminem would be a good choice. I know a lot of people who don't even like rap have done Eminem at least once so it would be a popular round.

yah, I'm taking MC Hammer off and putting in Eminem. I just thought MC Hammer would be an artist most non-rap people would now, and he has 2 songs that are pretty easy to parody. But yah I agree with Dave Matthias. Rihannah isn't a rapper, she's a singer. Plus Umbrella is a Rihanna song, Jay-z only has 1 verse. It's almost a cop out. Jay-z has a lot of great songs. Numb/Encore would be good for you. It's a great collabo of Jay-z and Linkin Park. It's about half rap and half rock. Try lokking at that one.

Drake is a reletively new sensation. He has had all of his hits in the past 1-2 years. He's done Best I Ever Had, Find Your Love, Forever, Over, and Successful are his biggest hits. He's a rapper/singer. Definitely still rap though.

Ok everyone, I've decided to do a 20 round contest. Each round will be scored individually on the usual 5pt rating scale. At the end of each round the scores will be tallied and I'll post the standings. If your parody is 1st overall in the round, you get 5pts for the overall contest. If your pardoy gets 2nd, you get 4pts for the overll, and so on and so forth.  At the end of the 20 rounds, there will be an unkown artist bonus round. After the bonus round, the overall scores throughout all 20+bonus rounds will be tallied to show an overall winner.
Here's the round breakdown:
Round 1: Jay-Z
Round 2: T.I.
Round 3: LL Cool J
Round 4: Notorious B.I.G.
Round 5: Nelly
Round 6: Missy Elliott
Round 7: Will Smith
Round 8: Run DMC
Round 9: Drake
Round 10: Ludacris
Round 11: Kanye West
Round 12: Flo-Rida
Round 13: Beastie Boys
Round 14: Salt-n-Pepa
Round 15: Snoop Dogg
Round 16: Tupac Shakur
Round 17: B.o.B.
Round 18: MC Hammer
Round 19: 50 Cent
Round 20: Kid Cudi
Bonus: ?

I'll post the first entry thread on January 1st, 2011. I can't wait, this will be fun!

Is this the order or are they going to be randomized?

I know this going to be distant distant distant future but after this 20 round Genre Artistry is done I think I'll start a 20 Round Metal contest.

Yes this is the precise order the rounds will occur in. So know you can write the one for the next round immediately, if time is an issue for you.

I think a "Modern" pop can be done too with Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Adam Lambert, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Jason Mraz, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, David Cook etc since none of them were big before the original artistry started

You may have just started a trend Bladeyman KARMA--(that's two from me in two days)
