Subject: Hip-Hop Parody Round 1 (Jay-z) (1/15/11)

Written By: Blaydeman on 01/01/11 at 1:29 pm

Hello fellow parodists and spoofers! I'm Blaydeman. If you're like me and enjoy listening and parodying rap music, then this is the contest for you! It's called the Hip-Hop Specialist contest. This contest is run similarly to the Artistry and SOTM contests, except it will highlight rap and hip-hop artists. Every month a new Rap/Hip-hop artist will be randomly selected for one contest. A list of songs that qualify for the contest will be posted in the entry thread, but more may be added through suggestions. Round 1 is the Jay-z round.

General Rules:
1. Entry must be submitted by replying to the entry thread by the set deadline or it is ineligible for the contest.
2. All entrants must read and comment on every entry. If not done then the entrant is disqualified.
3. All entrants must vote by replying to a seperate voting thread to the contest. This must be done before the voting deadline or the entrant will be disqualified.
4. Votes will be cast using a point system. You pick your favorite 5 parodies and place them 1-5. 1st (5pts), 2nd (4pts), 3rd (3pts), 4th (2pts), 5th (1pt).
5. You may not vote for your own parody.
6. At the end of the voting period, the points will be tallied, and the parody with the most points wins.
7. If there is a points tie, the parody that got the most first place votes will be the winner. And so on and so forth in the case of multiple ties
8. If you are disqualified from a round for any reason you maynot participate in the following round.

Ok this should be so much fun and it will rally challenge us all as parody writers.

I wish I could remember the "Change Clothes" idea that I had the other day, it was fantastic, I was going to work in the titles of the songs I've heard Change Clothes mashed up with. Don't you hate that?

Anyway, I'm sure I'll think of something, I nearly always do...

I've been wanting to do a parody of "Empire State of Mind". Perhaps I'll do a parody about baseball called: "Umpire State Of Mind"

Got my idea! It's a little story about a guy who doesn't do social things that much going to the beach. It'll be weird, but the title sub is a kinda homophone, so it'll have that going for it.

I'm going to try to have my TI round entry on amiright tomorrow - gotta write when the juices are flowing and the free time exists. I'd have posted this in the main contest thread but apparently that thread is locked.

Would "Crazy In Love" count? It's half Jay-Z and half Beyonce...

Subject: Re: Hip-Hop Parody Round 1 (Jay-z) (1/15/11)

I think crazy in love was established as a "no" on the original contest thread since its more of a 70-30 split

No, That discussion was about Rihanna and Jay-Z's "Umbrella"

Well Jay-Z's verse in "Crazy in Love" lasts about 43 seconds. The song overall is about 3:56 long. Assuming there's probably aboout 3:40 of actual vocals in the song, Ja-Z's portion would only account for about 20-23% of the vocal, so in this case I don't think it qualifies. I actually had listened to that song before I posted the contest thread an decided there wasn't enough Jay-Z in it for it to qualify. Sorry Matty :( You should go with your "Umpire State of Mind" idea, I thought that was pretty clever.

Crazy in love was also mentioned. Umbrella is like 90-10 mostly Rihanna.

"Goin' To The Beach, Yeah" is 2/3 finished. I worked in a Farscape reference, I'm satisfied.

In other news, I came up with an awesome idea for the upcoming Kid Cudi round. Question though: if a song samples another song, and I wish to use a parody of the sampled song as a basis for my parody, would I need to get permission from the original author?

Crazy in Love was mentioned during the same conversation as the Umbrella discussion, as with Umbrella, its  another artist FEATURING Jay-Z, not 'Jay-Z' and or 'Jay-Z featuring', Crazy in Love is not at all like Jay-Z's core stuff because its not primarily him

Kid Cudi is another artist I think should be replaced due to lack of songs. Day and night is the only thing he's done that I'd consider a major hit.

He's had the same number of singles as B.O.B. (Day 'n' Nite, Make Her Say, Pursuit of Happiness and Erase Me - that's Kid Cudi's singles).

Anyway, I've submitted "Goin' To The Beach, Yeah", should be up in a few days (that's what happens when you submit a parody on the weekend, it takes a while).

At least here in the states, Day and nite was the only one that was really popular, while B.O.B. has had three huge hits out of his four singles.

Good point, but "lack of major hits" still doesn't necessarily mean "lack of songs period". Kid Cudi has had two albums and a mixtape to choose things from, while B.O.B. (who I've never heard of except through mashups - that may just be me not listening to the radio, though) just has the one album.

I think it should be up to Blaydeman to decide whether Kid Cudi is worth keeping or not.

Perhaps then B.O.B isn't worth keeping...

I mean the only song I've heard by him is "Airplanes" which I only like because of Hayley Williams

Really I find tha interesting. You should check out his album, he has a lot of good songs. Airplanes was a big one, but there was also "Nothing on You", "Magic", "Don't Let Me Fall", and "Satellite" are all great songs. Really have a listen to the album,ou might like it.

Really?  You stated that they are 'ridiculous'. . .I agree, but I mean their lyrics. . .they are somewhat of a comedy already which when added to the fact that ICP is a genre of hip hop (horror-core specifically) makes them a very difficult artist to take on. . for me it'd be kinda like parodying myself as they are as out there (or more-so) than myself.

We've done Reel Big Fish, Bloodhound Gang and Weird Al Yankovic. Those three are just as wacky if not more so than ICP

Artists with a substantially more parody-worthy body of work than ICP that haven't made the list of 20:

OUTKAST
DIDDY
DR DRE
BUSTA RHYMES
FAT JOE
LUPE FIASCO
FABOLOUS
EVE

And the list goes on and on. Even Soulja Boy would be better than ICP. The only song of theirs that is really in the public consciousness is "Miracles", and after the SNL parody there is little need to do more with that song.
