Subject: October AmiRight Top Ten Voting Thread (Trial Run -- Results Posted)

Written By: c4p on 10/10/17 at 7:43 pm

*****Voting can begin as soon as the first song parody update of the month appears on AmiRight.  (It's now October 10th so any parody released on AmiRight during the month of October is eligible).

*****You enter and vote the same way -- by putting the urls of your favorite parodies from that month in your contest post, and assigning each entry a value from 1 to 10.

*****You may choose your own parodies.  That’s actually the idea.  The catch is, for every parody of your own that you choose, you must pick two that belong to two other different authors.  There’s a limit of 12 total for the month, which means there’s a limit of 4 of your own -- or anyone else’s -- entries.  But you don't have to choose your own; you can just vote if you want, as long as you're eligible. Thinking of simplifying this to everyone just pick their personal top ten, and only three can be ones they've written themselves.  Since this is just a trial run, do it either way you like, or even completely differently if you think of something else that might be good.

*****Only parody authors who’ve had at least 10 parodies appear on AmiRight may participate.  I hate to exclude newbies, but if anyone is going to game the system by creating multiple accounts, they’re going to have to work really hard for it.  The whole point of messageboard voting is it's public and accountable.  If we don't know who you are, we won't want to count your votes.

*****You don’t have to pick all your songs at once, but you should edit your contest post to add your choices as the month goes on. You can also go over twelve during the month, as long is it's back down to 10 by the time voting ends.  This means that votes don't "count" until voting ends -- so if someone chooses one of your parodies, that's good, but it's really just a nomination and it may not make the final cut.

*****Only parodies from the contest month are eligible.  Entering/ voting will be allowed until the seventh day of the following month, after which the 1-10 rankings will be tallied and the winners announced.

*****You are not required to read or comment on all entries.  You are not even required to comment on the parodies you choose (though obviously it would be nice).  This is in the spirit of the old Top Ten lists, where people could just ignore songs they didn’t know or weren’t interested in.  It’s up to the parody author to make their parody appealing to others if they want it to do well.

I think that’s pretty much it; hopefully everyone gets the idea.  Your contest post would be where you put your favorites of the month, both yours and anyone else’s.  It would also be a good place to put any DKTOS-type links, explanations, or otherwise campaign for them.  The 1-10 ranking is to help prevent ties, though I’m not sure how comfortable people would be publicly ranking their own parodies.  Also, I really like 1-10 ranking; it’s pretty universal and I think people are a lot more willing to give a 7, 8, or 9 to parodies they may like a lot, but save the 10s for the really wow stuff.

How long the list of winning songs is depends on how many people participate.  The hope is to eventually expand to a Monthly Top 40, but I’m guessing that whoever participates will tend to dominate the list, at least at first, so I’d probably want to start with a Top Ten, which would be posted in the AmiRight Events section.  The main goal of this for me, is to make the highest quality parodies on the site easily accessible to new visitors, encouraging and challenging them to stick around and participate.  That’s the theory, anyway.

a lot of songs I just ignored because I DKTOS.  A lot I ignored because a ton of them were written by the same two guys whose stuff I never ever like.  Doesn't mean I'd never vote for them, but it's their job to make their quality stand out, not mine.

I feel the exact same way, on a daily basis, and that is the gist of the problems facing AIR.

I will try to do this, if I can make the time.

Also, thinking about simplifying it further -- you just create your own personal top ten, and only three can be ones you've written.  I'm totally planning on submitting parodies soon so I can see how it looks when someone includes their own.  Still plenty of time left in the month.

- Here is my Top 10 as of October 16th... But it might change towards the end of the month

1. Matthias (Happy Halloween )
* Reason = This one was a challenge to accomplish. I know it's my parody but I think it's really funny and clever instead of warning you about the future the narrator is warning you about things that could happen on Halloween.
http://www.amiright.com/parody/90s/bazluhrmann2.shtml

2. Peter Andersson (My (Teenage) Children Say)
* Reason = A great take on this song (switching perspectives). I think that this topic has been done a few times but it really works well on this tune!
http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/abba269.shtml

3. Agrimorfee (My Mama's Spread)
* Reason = Hilarious! Dirty funny tune. We haven't have many dirty parodies since Red Ant doesn't write here too much anymore BUT this one is one that he would LOVE too!
http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/abba268.shtml

4. Conqueror of Parodies (Touch Live Wires)
* Reason = Physical comedy even as written word is so funny to me!
http://www.amiright.com/parody/2010s/pink10.shtml

5. Agrimorfee (The Heedless Salesman)
* Reason = Really gives Trump the business on this one! Many great references sprinkled throughout!
http://www.amiright.com/parody/misc/bingcrosby246.shtml

6. Z-Police Productions INC (Let's Learn The Elements (Of The Periodic Table))
* Reason = Very educational! I could hear this on an episode of Bill Nye the Science Guy! Not funny but very smart!
http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/reunion6.shtml

7. Conqueror of Parodies (I Think I'm an Android)
* Reason = I'm a sucker for anything science fiction and a person not knowing that they are a robot is a funny idea!
http://www.amiright.com/parody/90s/garbage29.shtml

8. Phil Alexander (My Mama's Head)
* Reason = Grim, dark and disturbing! Great tune for Halloween!
http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/abba270.shtml

9. Beverly Ellis (Mr. Ed/Walking Dead Parody)
* Reason = I've only seen the first 2 seasons of Walking Dead but you don't really need to for this one! It's another great one for Halloween!
http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/rayevansjaylivingston0.shtml

10. Robert D Arndt Jr (Hugh was a Porn Pig)
* Reason = This is a good tribute to a man who enriched many of our lives with his smut!

Okay, so more thoughts --

Second-guessing both the 1-10 rating idea and the comparing your own parodies to others idea --

What if instead it was just your straight personal top ten of the month, ranked from 10 points to 1, SOTM-style?  And your top ten wouldn't include your own parodies, BUT you could award up to three of your own parodies five extra points each?  It rewards people for voting, but you should still need points from others to make the final list.  Just spitballing here.  Anyway, if anyone is thinking of voting, that's another way you could try; still not sure how my voting post will look at the end.  Also feel free to discuss if you have thoughts, questions, or reservations.  Or just want to call me names or something, it's all good.

I'm writing a whole song calling you names  :D (sort of).  Well, you inspired it.  You'll see in a few days

Ultimately, whatever feels easiest to keep people coming back.

Okay, so as the month draws to a close, I guess it's time to either do this or not.  Once the month ends on Tuesday, anyone who's interested will have a week to finalize a voting post.  So if you're interested in seeing this contest happen beyond this trial month, the sooner you get started the better, as anyone who's on the fence about it will likely be encouraged to participate if others do first.  Which is why I'm going ahead and "finalizing" my votes here (subject to change of course).  I'm also making a new post to bump the thread, and modifying my old one so it's not confusing.

I'm going with the old SOTY-style voting, awarding points to my "Them Top Ten" -- my ten favorites of the month written by other authors.  Then choosing my "Me Top Three" -- my three favorites I've written, awarding 9, 6, and 3 points for those.  Hope it all makes sense, feel free to ask questions if anything is unclear.  And this is all just a trial run, so if you were planning on using a different voting system, go ahead and do that; I just want to invite people to give it a shot and see what happens.  Thanks!

Placeholding, not final until deadline or my say so...
FINAL, I see no need to change this list.

10 pts= Claude Prez "Kazoo Guy"
9 pts=Claude Prez "Eatin Fava Beans And Chives"
8 pts-=Ethan Mawyer "Hunrded Acre (Honey Goo)"
7 pts= = Matthias "Happy Halloween (Have Fun Screams)"

3pts= Matthias "Senseless Sports Fan"
2pts= Logan The Amazing "Mega Man" http://www.amiright.com/parody/80s/billyjoel374.shtml (this kid has a bright parody writing future ahead of him. This isn't a whiz bang funny parody like Claude's, but the construction of his verses and the rhymes, in spite of some questionable rhythm-to-word choices and the obscurity of the content, is keen. Give him a read if you haven't.)
1pt= Michael Pacholek "The Far-Mangled Spammer" http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/josefeliciano3.shtml

Thanks to everyone who's voted so far; I'm a little embarrassed I'm doing so well in a contest I'm trying to start but I'll live haha.

I just want to reiterate for anyone thinking of voting that it's supposed to be low-stress and highly imperfect -- no one is expected to look at every parody released last month, not even close.  More of a recognition of the ones that stood out to you already.  Okay thanks.

Okay, so here's the results of our trial run --

1.  Kazoo Guy by Claude Prez 39 points
2.  Happy Halloween (Have Fun Screams) by Matthias 34 points
3.  Hundred Acre (Honey Goo) by Ethan Mawyer 30 points
4.  Eatin' Fava Beans and Chives by Claude Prez 25 points
5.  Naked Snowmen by Peter Andersson aka K1chyd 22 points
6.  Botox Jello by Agrimorfee 15 points
7.  The Heedless Salesman by Agrimorfee 12 points
7.  My Mama's Head by Phil Alexander 12 points
7.  Get Ant Bait by Rick Duncan 12 points
10. Pay Our Debts by Claude Prez 11 points

All of this is assuming I counted correctly -- if I missed something, please let me know; I want it to be right.  Also, Matthias had 2 voting posts so I just used the most recent one.  Obviously if we start doing this for real, we'll want to keep things as unambiguous as possible, so you can make a new post, you'd just want to modify the old one to remove the old votes so it's not confusing.  Also, with Jeff's votes I sort of had to assume it went top to bottom since technically there were no points assigned.

Anyway, that's what it would look like.  Thanks everyone who voted -- I'm happy with how the list looks, not just because my name is all the hell over it, but because in my opinion it does a very good job of highlighting the good stuff.  I know the people who voted (other than Jeff, who didn't submit any parodies) have their names all over it, thus it kinda looks like a cliquish little club where we hand each other awards and tell each other how pretty we are.  I'm okay with that, for now.  It's a function of the current state of the site, and the voting system is designed to reward people who take the time to participate.  If we decide to pursue this further, anyone who thinks the list is invalid will be welcome to vote and score some of those sweet sweet ME ME ME votes.  And if enough people start voting, the Me votes will be less valuable but making the list will be more impressive.  Theoretically.

So I guess my question is:  what do y'all think?  Is this just a pointless vanity thing that should die a quiet death?  Or is it a good idea that could grow into something valuable for the site, with a bit of effort from a few dedicated members?  Honestly, I could go either way.  I'd call this a somewhat promising but hardly spectacular experiment so far, but the only thing I have to compare it to is the SOTM, which sort of took off and had a life of its own immediately, because the site was so much busier then.

The intention would be a link on the Events page, meaning the Top Ten would be easily accessible to anyone who visits AmiRight's front page.  That added exposure is what made the previous charts so appealing (and fraud-worthy).  But to be honest, I've been linking the All-Time Favorites list there, and while the hit count on the thread consistently rises when it's on the front page, it hasn't resulted in a single new comment for any of the parodies on the list, as far as I know.  Plus, the last time I submitted an update, it was rejected, and I frankly don't know what that means.  So my grand plan to help rejuvenate the site by making the quality more accessible to new users feels somewhat pointless right now.  Which bottom line means I'll need a level of interest from others to continue this little project.  Any and all thoughts are very much welcome at this point.  Thanks!

You got my votes correct, sorry, I didn't mean to add to the challenge :)

Personally I'd like to see it continue.  I've enjoyed reading new songs from old friends and its gotten my own creative juices going again (which will show a bit more than 0 submissions for November).

Actually, I’m apparently mistaken or just impatient — it’s shown up now.  It just took way longer than usual so I started telling myself stories; I do that sometimes

Okay, well, it looks like we have enough voters to try this for another month, at least.  I'm going to put up a voting thread with revised guidelines.  This time I'm going to do a little more advertising on the site to try to get more people to participate, and if you'd like to see this thing continue, I'd encourage you to do the same.  I'm thinking that leaving comments on some of the parodies we're choosing letting them know they're contenders might be the best way.  I may also submit a link to the Events page, though I hate to use that too much because it'll push the OWN and All-Time Favorites links out of sight sooner.  Any suggestions or questions about the advertising or contest itself are welcomed.
