Subject: Show Us What Your Dwelling Looks Like

Written By: quirky_cat_girl on 08/05/05 at 11:23 am

Ok....I thought it would be appropriate, since we have all of the other "show us" threads, to keep it going by posting pictures of your house/apt/dwelling (inside or out). Don't worry...I'm not a stalker or anything....just curious. ;D  I have to take a few new pics of my house...and then I will post them ASAP.

During the time that my house was under construction, we took several pictures of it. If I were to post any pics of those, I would definitely need to have them scanned, since they were taken with a disposable camera.

But I'm definitely looking forward to seeing your pictures, Erin! :)

I am one of four apartments above a real estate agent in the chinatown district of the Perth CBD.  I bought it two years ago this month.

The three windows beside the tree are my living room and bedrooms.

On the other side of the building - this is the view from my balcony.

Its funny - everyone thinks the building has been there for decades - but it was actually built in 1997!!  I like my portion cos I am on the curve of the building so my bedrooms both have a really curved wall. Someone told me thats good feng shui !!

The main dislike I have is the yellowy external colour. I would really like to have it redone in a vibrant shade of red or purple or blue. You cant see from the photo but many of the buildings on the street are funky bright colours.

Simply place the URL of the picture between the {img} and {/img} tags (with square brackets of course). Or you could simply post a link to them.

Ummm, hard question, that are a number of differing styles...ours is like a bit of a box.....

It is typical in as much as it is twin level.  Up until perhaps the 80's many houses in the warmer parts of Australia were built on stumps to catch the breeze and to provide some ventilation.  Although ours is built in underneath so that sort of kills the latter concept...

So much so that there is a style of house here referred to as a Queenslander, which would be on stumps and usually with verandas all around.  Very nice (and very expensive these days too)  :(

And it's been very well done too...

You'll be amazed at how some extensions look totally 'out of place' on some buildings of this style...

I could have it done to mine, but there's enough room for me!

The people who extended it had two children, a boy and a girl, so they wanted to make room for them to have a bedroom each.  When we were looking to move it had practically everything we were looking for in a house

Well, during the time that it was under construction, we came out every weekend or two to take a picture of its progress. And after escrow closed in February of '01, we've taken a few more pics of it.

The snow was about 3 feet and had to be shoveled.  The big lump in the left hand corner is my car. If you'd like to see more snow your are more than welcome to visit on the next snow storm, (shovel to be provided by proprietor)  ;D

Isn't *that* the truth!!!??  Snow is lots of fun, just looking out the window at it (especially if you have lots of food in the cupboards, you still have electricity, and you have a nice crackling fire in the fireplace.)  Otherwise, trudging through the heavy, wet, snow is a hassle, not to mention ice underneath that snow.  Busted my butt many a time slip sliding away.

Snow driving is scary too, especially when there are idiots still driving way too fast as if it's a normal sunny day (Yeah, but the speed limit is just a suggestion...)  ::)

And how come, you can always find a windshield scaper in the summer but never in the middle of winter when you need it most?  I swear someone steals mine every year just to mess with my head.  :D

Its very bright.  I guess its hard for me to judge because there aren't many houses in that style in this country so I have little to compare it too.

Papergirl - nice pics of your office and practice area.

That seems to be the opinion of many people-too bright. I think I mentioned on another thread, when we looked at the swatches, it didn't look that bright. But once it got on the house, it did. I don't understand that. I'm sure it will fade with the eliments.

I seldom get snow in California (except in the mountains). The only time I can remember there actually being snow in the Los Angeles area was on February 8, 1989. I remember, my dad was taking me to school (I was in 3rd grade at the time), and we stopped to take some pictures of it.

Here's the front of the house I rent:

Here's the backyard:

You can't tell from these pics, but off in the nearby distance there are mountains to the west (about 12 miles), south (about 3 miles) and west (about 1 mile).  I'm just north of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve.  8)

I think the Xeriscape Landscaping gave away your location. ;)  I used to live in Glendale and Goodyear.  I'm jealous. :(

I just call it "desert" landscaping.  :P  :D  Xeriscape must be a westside thing.  ;D

Nearby distance?  Isn't that an oxymoron ;)  JK....you know I'm soooo jealous of where you live :)

I like jumbo shrimp too.  :D  Oh, and I meant 12 miles to the east.  McDowell Mountains there.  Funny because in high school I lived about 2 miles west of where I live now (practically at the base of Lookout Mountain) and I don't recall  the McDowell Mountains being so close.  It's all built up over there now.

Nice place, DJ!  8)

Thanks!  :)  The house is pretty basic but the backyard is a nice little rented piece of paradise.  8)

Um...when it gets warmer?  I usually wait until the water's about 80F...it's not heated so I use it about 6 months out of the year.

Here is an old victorian style house down the road from us

And here is a HUGE barn also near us.  Both barns are connected to a third barn (which you can't see in this picture) it makes kind of a U structure with the three barns.  I thought it was interesting.

You go first, then I'll go.  ;) The scene in Almost Famous when Russell is on the roof, a little bit stoned and he jumps in is so wild and reckless and this place would be a good opportunity to reenact that scene or to get seriously injured.

here is the modest dwelling of Badfinger-fan. Been here almost 5 years. It's just the right size for the 3 of us, and our friends have declared it Party-Central for super bowl, new years, and any other reason to get together. When we first moved in, the little old lady next door asked me if I was the new gardner LMAO, it was funny. I greeted her and love our neighborhood. Tons of kids for Halloween, the streets are crawling with the little buggers. I'll post the backyard when I clean up the winter mess back there. I did some yardwork just now out front.

I do see the resemblance, they really are quite similar in locale and style. I lived in San Antonio in 1958-1960 when my dad was stationed at Kelley AirForce base painting helicopters, we were within walking distance of The Alamo.  what a small world it is, and gettin smaller all the time.

Most of the house looks good.  The kitchen and bathrooms are the only thing that is bad.  It's not bad living on base.  It feels very safe and you don't have to pay for utilities.

That's cool; I've always wondered what it was like on a base. There are a few of 'em near where I live, in California.

As a matter of fact, I live about an hour or so away from it. Vandenberg, as I know, is in Santa Barbara County, near the city of Lompoc. I've only been past it once or twice, though.

Yeah I love that the yards are big, I'm not in constant fear when the kids go out front.  It's also nice that the houses a separate.  Most of the houses on base are the duplex type, that would suck.

I don't recognise that particular building, but I've invariably seen it, since I'm out and about in the city quite a bit. That's a good view of the city you have, I think it would be viewing it from the north to northeast.

I disagree:

Living with the olds means:
- Cheaper rent
- Free food
- Laundry is done for you
- etc

...well for me anyway. But there are downsides, like putting up with annoying younger siblings etc.

I live in a corner of the city, up a small hill, tucked away, on a dead end.  I walk two minutes and I am in a regular working class neighborhood of single/two family homes. Drive two minutes and I am in at the shops.  This is the little statue.  I collect bookreading figurines and I saw this at a garden center. It was too expensive, but I held on and in the fall the price dropped dramatically and I ended up getting it for about $50.  :)

I think I finally figured out this picture stuff.  This is my house taken this morning.  Mind you I live in a very urban city, but found this house in a hidden corner.  We(neighbors) border conservation land of the next town over.  It is almost like living in the country with a five minute walk to the bright lights, big city. Location is everything

That picture was taken last year, here are some more recent ones. The house was a steal, (170s) we got it from a friend who's kids had moved out. It is a work in progress and still needs a lot of TLC. The previous owners had it custom built in 82. And did nothing after that.  The roof is new and So far I've only up dated the kitchen and paint removed wall paper,( MAN THAT SUCKED!) added crown molding and some floors. It about killed me. Remodeling almost gave me a nervous breakdown!

downstairs: kitchen, dining room, lounge, study, toilet (called half bathroom here) and family room
upstairs: four bedrooms, laundry room, three bathrooms (one off master bedroom) and what's called a bonus room.  Basically the bonus room is all of the space above the triple garage (at the right hand end of the house looking at the photo)  It isn't a bedroom because it doesn't have any doors.  We reckon it's a tax dodge.

Also a large basement.  In this house it hasn't been finished off so we mainly use it for storage.  We do have a table tennis table set up down there.

It doesn't show that clearly on the photo but the house is on quite a steep hill.  The only flat bit is the area behind the house, a smallish lawn area before the trees.

Thank you.

With regards to the gardening we actually have someone to come and cut the lawns and rake the leaves.  Dai's company will pay rent up to a certain amount (but don't let us keep the difference if we rent a cheap place) so we asked the landlord if they would increase the rent slightly and include gardening with it!  In the winter someone will clear the snow off the drive for us.

At it biggest it is about 12 of my paces wide (so about 12 meteres?).  The very longest bit is 60 paces long.  However the shape is a little irregular.

I found the easiest thing is to do a bit each day.  The downstairs is mainly laminate flooring so I can sweep it really easily.  Also we fairly rigidly stick to "no shoes in the house" so that helps a lot!

thanks the color is called Cold Cash.  Quite while ago my parents added on a room so I have a left over piece of my parents old bedroom.  Each of us kids got to pick our own carpeting.  The carpet I picked at the time was grey with some green and maroon here and there.  Thats when I decided to pull one of the colors out of the carpet.  I thought green would be easier to work with and I'd rather have a cool comfortable feel in my room then a reddish color that reminds of 100 degree weather.  Before getting a text phone and a pet fish again I'm going to need some shelves for a lot of this stuff.  I'm just glad I got all this stuff out of the closet so I could see it.

In that little cabnet.  I got just at the right angle to look like I was in the cabnet and colored the windows so you couldn't see my door being reflected.

What I didn't mention is that the windows are facing south, so yes: lots of light on sunny days - even with the adjacent building.
The upside of having this view: there's no neighbors peeking in either. ;)

So this my music section. I have records(7 inch and 33 inch records), CDs, and cassettes. All of which I have collected since the late 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. Pretty much my youthful days. I keep my cassettes and CDs inside the blue and white compartments. The large record single you see there is The Glamorous Life by Shiela E. One of my favorite songs. But I need to get the 7 inch single of it.

Very nice!

My music collection is even smaller than that; perhaps I can share it on here sometime. :)

My house in the woods.  9 acres away from everybody, just the way I like it.  Built in the mid 80s.

My kitchen, a nice mix of original 80s countertops and hardwood floor and cabinets, along with the black and stainless I've replaced everything else with as it died.

My living room, with furniture from 1989, wood accessories, and my CRT TV which still works and looks great so I'll keep it.

The CD part of my music collection.  I also have about 800 tapes in the basement and a pile of records too.

here's where I'm trying to start my shade row.  The plant that doesn't look to happy is a butterfly bush.  I'm going to prune it down a little to see if it will grow or die.  I've got a pansy in front of it.  Both of these plants have the ground shaded by a small fence I put in the ground.  This will keep the roots of the plants cool if the plants fry.

My yard. Last summer obviously.

Second one is the view of the big part from the road. Takes about 3 hours to mow with a rider but I enjoy it. You can see my camper and satellite dish way back. I also own another 5 acres of the woods back there

First one is the view from my bedroom window. I see deer, foxes, rabbits, birds. That’s my 10 ft c band dish that I moved from the old house and planted here. I still use it all the time. The camper not so much. I already feel like I’m camping half the time. I have a fire pit on the other side behind the garage.

Some yard.

We have a 22 ft camper van that we haven't used too much in the last couple of years due to problems with it. We were going upgrade but decided not to so we repaired it and was planning on using it some this year but who knows if that is going to happen.

Thanks all. I originally parked the camper by the dish as I used it as a place to house the equipment to align the dish. But I just left it there. I was always fascinated by those little brick buildings at the base of antenna towers where the equipment is housed. I wanted a tiny brick building by my dish that would  appear like a little control room even if I only used it as a little shed. Maybe someday.

I did a little redecorating on my chest/dresser area. The lamp is vintage 1940s lamp. The doll is probably from the same era, 1940s or 50s. I think it adds a touch of innocence. I also added a beautiful floral picture. It is gold with pinks and violet colors. Just thought I'd share. I don't mind everyone is welcome in my home.

It looks very nice, along with the paint job on the garage and the fence. I have to mow part of my driveway but I like it that way. I don’t have mud problems in the spring either. My dad has a short driveway and he got a quote to have it paved while they were already out there to do the neighbors driveway. It was about as much as he paid for the garage, he couldn’t believe it. So he had a load of stone spread over it. My driveway is like 250 feet so I can’t imagine how much that would cost if I even wanted to.

Thanks. I was a bit disappointed with the fence. I think the people who installed it could have lowered it a bit. Now there is a BIG gap between the bottom and the ground. They also put one of the planks that had a big spot on it right in the center instead of putting it behind the garage where no one would see it. And some of the planks were loose. I still need to give them a disappointing review.

Oh, and in case you having seen this yet: http://www.inthe00s.com/index.php?topic=48369.0

I have a plan for the light over the sink too. You start something and it spawns more ideas.

As much as I love it, I don’t have the kind of money to do the woodwork of Susanka’s designs, especially at today’s lumber prices. But I do bits and pieces when I find them.
