Subject: Older pictures of your neighborhood?

Written By: Marty McFly on 07/15/08 at 10:27 pm

I found this picture of my townhouse complex from 1979, when it was newly built (apparently it used to be an orchard, from people I've talked to who lived here earlier). It's really a trip like Back to the Future seeing that. Other than the cars in the parking spots, or the paint job it doesn't look much different today (from what I can tell), but I'll post a current pic soon for comparison.

oh wow...that's a really cool picture, J. Your townhouse complex looks really nice.  I don't think I'll be able to find old pics of my neighborhood, per se...but I will see if I can find some older pics of my town.

That's a cool pic Marty. Camera's were scarce around here, so we have very few pictures from before the mid '80s unfortunately.

Somewhere though, I do have a really neat picture of the neighborhood I lived in as a kid from around 1987. Several buildings from then are gone now including a Hardee's restaurant and a place that was once nothing more than a small house on the corner has now turned into a shopping center. Hopefully, I will come across it somewhere. :)

I love the station wagon with the wood paneling. that was the typical family vacation vehicle prior to SUV's

Thanks guys. :) ^  Yeah Mike, I actually like the wood panel design, but that's a dead giveaway to when that picture was taken, lol. What's interesting is the car to the left of it looks '50s. They were already classic/old cars by then, but I guess there were still some on the road.

Oh, here's a current picture. I forgot the most obvious thing - the trees are a zillion times huger! ;)

It's great to see pictures from then and now of the same locality. 8) I'd love to post some myself, but I don't have any that are scanned in yet... and my current neighborhood isn't very old at all yet.

That's really cool. I love looking at older pictures of an area and seeing how much it's changed over the years.

You can barely see the building from that same spot anymore, but then again it has been almost 30 years. ;)

Two piccys taken down the street from our house in Crockett...

1987 - I'm a senior in high school.  Looking down towards intersection...

2007 - A little further up the hill, looking down at same intersection...

I admit I came into a whole bunch of old piccys from my hometown.  Really cool sh*t...

This one is pure gold.  Circa 1984 and I'm a freshman in high school.  In the 1987 photo, above, it would be located in the upper-right corner of that photo.  It's an ice cream shop where my buddy and I would often hang out after school, weekends, etc.  The old creamery has been gone for a long, long time but the place has been a restaraunt, was abandoned for years and is now a catering business...

The vintage sign, "bakery", is misleading.  It was not a bakery in 1984...

  I miss those days...

Well, by American standards I live in a pretty old neighborhood. Let me see what I can find -

http://www.webster.edu/~corbetre/images/pj-82b.jpg

One of the main streets.

http://www.webster.edu/~corbetre/images/white-early.jpg

This was used as a hotel during the Worlds Fair up the street, now.. finally.. it's a bar!

http://www.webster.edu/~corbetre/images/bottleinn.jpg

Long gone now, all houses along there.

http://www.webster.edu/~corbetre/images/dolan-a.jpg

This one is still around in a sort of way, the whole building has been torn down, built back up etc and it's split up amongst different companies. This was just before the turn of the century.

http://www.webster.edu/~corbetre/images/lehman-a.jpg

This was there until just a few years ago, then the Hardware store, the barber shop, the grocer, the deli and the pharmacy were all torn down to build a faceless condo building that nobody has ever moved in to.

Here's 'The Arena' in 1928.

http://www.webster.edu/~corbetre/images/arena-1928.jpg

It was partially destroyed by a tornado close to 30 some years ago. Lot's of places around here are named for it 'Arena Bar & Grill', 'Arena Liquor' etc.

http://www.webster.edu/~corbetre/images/kraft.gif

Most of these are still standing. Post war project - Here's the newspaper clipping that goes with it -
"1946: The largest housing project of the city's post-war building boom is underway as the first 65 houses go up in a new development. The development is around the intersection of Kraft Street and West Park Avenue, south of Forest Park near Richmond Heights. The houses all have living rooms, dinettes, partially tiled kitches with exhaust fans, two bedrooms and full basements with gas-burning furnaces. Each is expected to sell for about $6700."

http://www.webster.edu/~corbetre/images/clayton-tamm-whole.jpg

Here's a picture of the main intersection as it was in the late 20's/early 30's, totally changed now. Maybe for the better admittedly, there are still some locally owned business and nice little houses there.

It's depressing to see just what my neighborhood was like then as compared to now. Much nicer! Admittedly, where I live has fared so much better, we're a small blue collar community, we still have meetings to discuss what's going on, my Union Hall is all of a mile away and we hold our meetings in the church hall and when things happen we can all be found out on the street discussing it, like when we had a 3 car + Bus pile up with some kids decapitated or when the crazy guy finally snapped and started shooting at the cops and threw a dud grenade at them (Yes, I'm serious!). But at the end of the day, the local business are slowly being forced out and unfortunately, not everybody feels so strongly about keeping our neighborhood ours.

I know where all of those places are judging by the streets. I lived in STL for 16 years.

Our local newspaper did a series of then and now photos of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Then they matched them up and put a little slider bar so that you can see it.  It is kind of a neat application.  If you are interested, it can be found here (along with several other photos, although even it has changed since then, the Civic Arena (domed arena that looks like a space ship) is now torn down and is a giant parking lot for a regular shaped square hockey arena that would be just off to the left of the picture now.)

I happened to stumble across this thread a few minutes ago and I thought it was pretty interesting, so I decided to revive it. My neighbourhood isn't too old at all, in the grand scheme of things. It was built in the Mid 90s and my parents were one of the first to purchase a block of land. If it wasn't for the cars, visiting my housing estate (which is only small) would be like revisiting the Mid '90s, as all of the homes were built during that time and none of them have had any major work done to them!

Anyway, these two images were taken back in November 2007. I didn't take them, I sourced them from Google's Street View. I have blurred out the street names for privacy reasons. Also, my house isn't in any of the photos either. The only thing that has changed since then are the cars!

I found some pictures of some street in Auckland where I live, one taken in the 1970s I would guess and the other one in the 2010s.
As you can tell by the two old buildings on the left, they were taken in the exact same place, although the rest of the street has changed quite a bit:

Very interesting. I guess houses that were built around that time were similar everywhere. (My house in S.A. was built in 1987 or '88.)

Way cool. But, I hate to say that it kind of lost its charm without a lot of the old buildings. I love old buildings and I'm glad to see at least 2 of them remain.

Judging from the car design I would rather date that in the early 60ies... not 100% sure though. :-\\
