I made this for Kevin for Christmas, It's his family crest!

I actually took a little course in ceramics when I was 8 years old, back in July 1988. And I remember making a ceramic bowl with an attached spoon. If I could find that somewhere, I'd photograph it and share it right here!

You're right. I just have to think of a good theme first. I'll see what I can do in the days ahead. I know I enjoy making quizzes and taking part in the ones that others have made!

Speaking of making things, I'll see if I can find some to take pictures of and show on here. I will contribute to this thread at some point.

I'm finding it more and more difficult to come up with a quiz theme that hasn't already been used.  Perhaps that's why I haven't posted a new quiz in a while.  I don't know -- maybe I'll just go with another 'random' quiz just so I can get something on the board.

Speaking of making things, I'll see if I can find some to take pictures of and show on here. I will contribute to this thread at some point.

So when I was in Philly I fell in love with this Snoopy t-shirt but it was too small for me and sadly it was the only one in the store.  :(

I decided to buy it anyway and do something with it when I got home. I cut it up and attached it to another t-shirt that is the right size for me.  :)

Cool stuff everyone :)

Not sure if this counts, but I often make my own CD album covers (front and back).  The last one I made was specifically as an album cover for a selection of 80s songs on my Zune.  I may turn it into an actual CD ...

My pictures are on the blurry side.  I have one more necklace, but the picture was too blurry.  I'll try cleaning the cacmcord again.  I'm sure there would be some people that would like to buy them, but I've got a mom who is afraid I'll loose SSI which I suppose is the only way I'll ever be able to live ::).  Yes I may need to be on SSI, but I'm not helpless.  My mom has been getting after me telling me I'm lazy, but it seems to be her and her fear driveness that makes it seem like a bad idea to do anything, so I don't.  Obey my parent so I can get accused of sinning.

Nice necklaces, Wildcard!

One winter when I was very sick with strep throat and very bored, I made a rendition of a Hopi squash blossom necklace out of brass-toned safety pins and tiny colored beads. I don't know if I still have it, but if I can find it I'll post a pic.

I was able to load and old program I remember how to use so I can do pictures without asking for help all the time.

I'm still going to say I have a gift for color and shape.  Mom says I have a gift for painting, but I think I just can paint.  Same thing here, I don't know anything about jewelry, but can do it. I once thought about making jewelry to sell or something, but mom still wants me to paint.  Think I want to just garden and not do either and just finish the painting class I'm in now.

I would guess around 2 to 3 hours. I didn't sit down and complete it all at once though. I worked on it bit by bit throughout the day so it is difficult to say how long it took me exactly.

I'm not sure; I was just randomly starting with a few brushstrokes (at the suggestion of the cruise staff members hosting the workshop), and then I developed it into something. And I love nature and the beach, so that's what it developed into. :)

A little purse I made (crochet) a couple years ago, right before taking our last cruise:

I used it a ton on the cruise, as I sized it to hold the ship's room key card.

Wow, I never knew you crocheted, that's wonderful! :)

good for a couple things, but I'm usually carrying lots of things.  It's hard for me to find a big enough purse to hold everything.

Agreed - it's not my everyday purse.  But on a cruise ship, it's often necessary to carry the little key card (and nothing else) while going about the ship, and I had an outfit or two with no pockets.  Plus, it's lightweight and cute!  (I used sparkly yarn.)    :)

It fit the bill perfectly for the cruise.  I've used it a few times since.  It does fit my phone, just barely, but that puts a lot of stress on it so I do that sparingly.

That is great. My mother used to crochet and could make just about ANYTHING. But, she never taught any of us.  :-\\

My purse was getting bigger and bigger and bigger. Then, I decided to go with a fanny pack. I love it. It forces me to just pack the "essentials." What I really love about it is the fact that I don't have to keep an eye on it. I just wear it around my waist and I know it is secure-I don't have to put it on the floor or worry that I may forget it. It is also better for my back.

Hmmm - that reinforces it with me, I should teach the grand-kids how to crochet.  It was my grandmother who taught me  :)

(Of course, living in rural Michigan as a teen, during the cold months it was often "get crafty" or else "get bored".  I found myself choosing the former - I crocheted hats, scarves, mittens - even clothing like vests.  A great alternative to being bored, not to mention that I had the coolest homemade hats and scarves around, great for the cold.  I also sew - when I was 15, I sewed myself an awesome blue hooded lined semi-fitted wool overcoat with a full suite of buttons and then I crocheted a variegated blue and white fashion floppy hat and matching scarf to go with it - I felt ever so stylish!  Among my proudest home-made ensembles.)

I tried to learn how to sew. I bought a really nice sewing machine in a cabinet. I managed to make half a pair of shorts and half a skirt. But I was really proud of myself that I actually replaced a zipper on a pair of jeans. It didn't quite look like it did when I bought them but it was ok. For years I basically used the cabinet (with the machine in it) as a side table. I finally gave it to my niece.

And yes, you SHOULD teach the grandkids to crochet.

I recall I first "learned" to sew due to I had home economics in junior high, and sewing was covered.  However, I didn't do too well in school with sewing, at least not to start - I found myself struggling.  Once again it was my grandmother, who pulled me aside and showed me some of her own pointers, after which I improved by leaps and bounds.  I owe her so much.

When our family first moved to rural Michigan, for a few years our grandparents lived with us in essentially a "mother in law suite" that was part of the house.  So I got lots of her between the ages of 11 and 14.  Lucky me!  (Except when I'd get into fights with her - which was more than I want to admit.)

I have to somewhat sheepishly admit that it's only relatively recently that I learned how to sew a button on a shirt. I THOUGHT I knew how to do it, but whenever I would sew a button on a shirt it would fall off almost immediately. So finally I just looked it up online. I didn't realize you had to sew a little "nest" (that's what I call it anyway) first to set the button on before you start sewing the button itself on. I was so thrilled that I finally learned how to do it correctly that I went out and bought one of those little sewing kits that you can get in any drugstore. Though I STILL can't figure out those strange little tin metal things with the wire on them that supposedly thread needles somehow.  ???

Very nice!

My mom learned how to knit in 2010, from a friend who is close in age to her. She went on to knit several scarfs to give as Christmas gifts that year, and even made one for herself.

Aha, knitting is one skill I never mastered.  I've tried to learn it somewhat in recent years (not to mention repeatedly as a teen) but it just didn't really click in a big way.  I might be able to eke out a simple potholder or an extremely basic no-frills scarf by knitting; as of today, nothing more.  (Unlike crocheting, which I became moderately good at.)  As I have time I may keep trying; if so, maybe in a year or two I'll be better at it.

Crocheting; that's something my paternal grandma mastered.

Yep, if you keep trying you'll become gradually better at it.

I had sewing in jr. high, too. I still have the stuffed turtle that I made in that class (with a lot of help from the teacher).

Grandparents are wonderful. I lived with my grandmother for about a year when I was 14/15 years old. Her specialty was cooking (especially baking cookies)-so much so that she wrote a cook book that was first published in the 1940s. (My sibs & I just published it on ebook form.) But, once again, I never really learned from her-but I was well fed when I lived with her.  ;)

I can't thread a needle without those little tin metal things.

Thanks for the info. I still have my doubts if I can maneuver one of those, but at least I'll know how. I think my problem was I never pushed the wire part all the way through the needle's eye.

Imagine people far in the future coming across one of those and trying to figure out what it is.  :D

This was NOT a kit. He did by using blueprints from the ship.

The S.S. Central America is a fascinating story. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Central_America

Son-in-law has colleagues & students who are working on the treasures they recovered from it. Since he is a geologist-specializing in gold, they refer to him when they want to know where the gold originally came from. Believe it or not, he can almost pinpoint the mine where the gold came from.

I just saw this now. That's a real work of art! I was about to give you karma for it, but then I realized it's not yours', but Carlos's ;D

As for me, I started learning how to make Arduino (a small computer or microprocessor) projects yesterday.

https://i.imgur.com/TooJN2a.jpg

It's not a complex program by any means. It's a Green LED that blinks for 1 second and stays off for another. But it's a start! and I plan to make more complex projects in the near future. I've got a temperature sensor, a motion sensor and a couple of other cool sensors to work with.

That’s cool. It was in 2008 I think I built one from online plans but learned to modify the code a bit for my liking. I built 3 and still have them. They used mine for their front page. I can’t believe it’s still there as others have built cooler looking ones. But I still have that car and it has 305000 miles and still runs great.

https://ecomodder.com/wiki/MPGuino

I’ve thought about getting into Arduino again as I’ve wanted to build a pellet stove controller.
