Subject: Our House In Puerto Rico

Written By: CatwomanofV on 04/07/10 at 1:17 pm

I thought that some of you may be interested to see how our house is coming along.

Here are a few before shots.

This is the kitchen. Yes, it is very dark. We did take out that wall which you will see in later photos.

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/House%20In%20Puerto%20Rico/Kitchen.jpg

This is the loft-it sits over the sink.

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/House%20In%20Puerto%20Rico/005-1.jpg

Here is the living room ceiling-or lack of one. Yup-that is the tin roof you are looking at. And in the PR sun, it acts like a oven so you can imagine that house was EXTREMELY hot. You might also notice that along the edges, she had it stuffed with newspaper.

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/House%20In%20Puerto%20Rico/010.jpg

Here is the master bedroom.

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/House%20In%20Puerto%20Rico/BR1-master.jpg

And one of the other bedrooms.

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/House%20In%20Puerto%20Rico/BR3.jpg

The back steps.

Now for some after shots.

Here is the loft after that all was taken down and replaced with a railing.

Here is the living room ceiling and Justo (pronounced Who-stow) who is doing most of the work and doing an outstanding job.

Here is the master bedroom without the roof.

The master bedroom with the new roof/ceiling.

This is the master bedroom floor in the process of getting reworked.

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/House%20In%20Puerto%20Rico/IMG_1320.jpg

Here is what it looks like after completed.

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/House%20In%20Puerto%20Rico/IMG_1430.jpg

This is looking into the kitchen (you can see the ladder to the loft). That was where we took out that wall-took away one bedroom and opened up the kitchen.

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/House%20In%20Puerto%20Rico/IMG_1438.jpg

Here are the new back steps (and my father-in-law's legs lol). A lot more safer than the old ones.

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/House%20In%20Puerto%20Rico/IMG_1343.jpg

There is still a lot more to go-we need new cabinets in the kitchen and want to get a peninsula/island. We also need furniture, too.  We are also thinking about doing up a deck out back.

We have a lot more pictures and I my wonderful sister-in-law keeps sending us more as this progresses.

Thanks, everyone. A few other things that we need to do: Put interior walls up-either sheetrock or the same paneling that we used on the ceiling. Here is how it looks on one wall in one of the other bedrooms.

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/House%20In%20Puerto%20Rico/IMG_1376.jpg

You can see all around that the outer walls don't have any interior walls.

We are also thinking about putting in glass windows-especially in the living room & kitchen. You have to close the shutters if you want to put on the a/c and then it is really dark. In the bedrooms it doesn't matter too much because you want it dark to sleep-but in other rooms...

We are also thinking of adding a window or two to that other bedroom that I showed the photo of in my first post. And adding another window in the loft.

Oh, I forgot to tell you about our plans for the loft. I want to find mural wallpaper of basically looking out from a boat/ship. Then we are going to find a ship's wheel and mount it so it turns and it will be the grandkids very own ship and they can sail anywhere in the universe they care to.  ;D ;D ;D  I have looked for the mural but so far no luck. If anyone has a photo or something that shows a wooden railing of a boat (like an old boat/ship) please let me know. I know there are places that will turn a photo into a mural.

This place has a good picture of the front of a ship (and the view of other ships - pirate??? ships on the ocean) - probably not what you want....

But I have seen it (looking for horse murals on the girls room) - http://www.borderstore.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=BSO&Category_Code=KWM

Now you have me dreaming - some of the plain ocean landscapes (and build a wooden "false" railing on the wall; would bring a nice 3 dimensional concept to it)...

That pirate ship is sort of what I am looking for but from the side (since they are going to have their own ship's wheel).

I did find that shot but it really isn't what I'm looking for-the pirate ship is more like it.

The false railing may be a possibility. Another possibility is to take a trip to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum and take a photo myself on the Philadelphia. I can then photoshop the ocean rather then the lake as a background.

http://www.lcmm.org/our_fleet/philadelphia.htm

What would probably be better if we took a trip to Mystic and do that with one of their ships.

That is sort of what I'm looking for but just not quite. I want it looking out on either starboard or port side and you see the railing.

Something like this view:

http://cache1.asset-cache.net/xc/a0146-000445.jpg?v=1&c=IWSAsset&k=2&d=31D8FB54DE31AA50431126A83B5D4D999BFFC89856108FA12F12BA0A44EF62EFEC7C5022FB410D56

But I want see more of the boat and I want it all to be wood-like a pirate ship.  ;)

Like I said, the sea part I can photoshop but I need the boat part.

Thanks everyone for your help with this.

Most of the furniture is in. Here are some pics:

Here is the dinning room set we got.

Here is the first bedroom set we got:

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/House%20In%20Puerto%20Rico/082.jpg

This was the set that my SIL really liked that we decided to give this one to her and we bought another one.

We are really kicking ourselves because you can see the bedroom is very tight right there. The bedroom on the other side of the wall is bigger. We should have moved the wall before putting in the new floor. It can still be done but it won't be for a while. I'm really hoping that I can talk Carlos into it for next year but I'm not too sure.

Not a great pic of the dresser but you can get a sense of what it looks like.

Here is the chest of drawers:

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/House%20In%20Puerto%20Rico/027.jpg

That is the basic furniture. We still need end tables, a coffee table, stuff on the walls, lamps, accessories, etc. My SIL is going to give us a bunch of stuff-sheets, towels, and such. She is also going to give us the bed that we usually sleep on when we are here for our 3rd bedroom. But, it now has a refridge & a stove and it is ready to move it.

Awesome Cat!  I like the first bedroom set, but I am into more mission/arts an crafts look, and I wouldn't want to crawl over someone to get out of bed.  But the other looks much larger, and has much more of a presence. O0 The girls want a futon, similar to those, for up in their "community" room, so if they have friends.

Can I ask, is it the thing there not to have drywall, and insulation - I figured it would help with cooling costs.  But I have not really been outside of the states

Most houses in PR are made out of cement so drywall isn't really an issue. The woman we bought the house from either built it or had it built by relatives/friends. It wasn't professionally built. She basically put it together with whatever she could in terms of material. If you look at a lot of the before shots, you will see that the house was basically a frame. The roof was corrugated tin which made the house an oven. With the new roof (and ceiling), it just makes the house so much cooler. We had put in drywall in the dinning room & living room. Eventually, we will be adding drywall in all rooms.

Like I said, every time we come down here (when my SIL is here), the bed we sleep in, I have to climb over him. He says he doesn't mind. I'm hoping that we can move the bed where I will just have a little walkway (don't need too much). But, if we do put in the drywall, that will take away just a bit more room. We will figure it out.

Modern construction here is in concrete, and so no need for dry wall, but some older construction, actually classical construction, had no dry wall.  Our new roof is classic P.R. style, designed to insulate, and it does work.  We will install dry wall, not for insulation, but for looks.  All in all, we are taking a "traditional" casita and turning it into a +/- casa

Thanks Cat,

Like I said, I had no idea.  I just was wondering about cooling and such. I know I have seen a house hunters episode that they were looking at home in PR, and they were upset there were no tubs (and I remember you saying the house you had did not have one as well).  I just couldn't remember the house frames and such.

I am sure it will all work out, heck you are probably further on that home that I am on my home we have lived in for 9 years now ::)

Love it!

That is what Cat said,  thanks!  I was just curious.  Our house is stucco...  and I know insulation is not really an issue as long as the stucco is good.  I have never been out of the states, so I was just wondering.  Thanks

Pretty!

I know next to nothing about PR, is your house near the (any) shore?  Would it be reasonibly protected from hurricanes?

We are about 20 minutes from the shore. You can see the Caribbean from my SIL's house-which is about 10 minutes from ours. (Does that make sense?) As for hurricanes...well, it is a wooden structure.  :-\\ The roof has some reinforcements tied to the foundation pillars. They are supposed to hold the roof down in strong wind. Our best bet with a hurricane for the house is that we are 1. lucky, 2. the insurance will pay (which we do have). Our insurance is higher than the average home insurance there because it is wooden-but still cheaper than what we are paying for insurance on THIS house in Vermont. Most modern structures are made of concrete so they will hold up during hurricanes. However, the south-western side of the island (where the house is) doesn't get as many hurricanes as the north-eastern side.

That is very nice and clean.  :)

Thanks, Howard. It is clean because it is new and hasn't been used yet.

My SIL will be getting new lighting today-a hood over the stove & a florescent light under the cabinet above the sink.

I'm willing to take a plane to PR, Cat.
How long it takes your plane from Vermont to PR ? and How much ?
I got a second den only 300 miles from home and I go there once a month, more or less.
I guess you like to go as often as you can, it seems like heavens, the Caribean sea, despite hurricanes a breathtaking place to live.
Sailing there must be a really pleasure, but when the day gets gloomy you better stay away from sea.

Lot of health to enjoy your house my friends.

Here is what the kitchen looks like now. My SIL put the backsplash in herself and I think she did a wonderful job (and she picked out the tile, too). Sometimes I feel that this is more her place than ours.  :-\\

Here is the scene across the street yesterday:

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/002-1.jpg

I swear, everyone who had a horse was out riding them all over the place. At one point, there were something like 5 coming down the street-it looked like Saratoga Raceway.  :D ;D ;D ;D

Here is the neighborhood rooster.

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/011.jpg

He really is pretty.

Here he is with his harem in the back yard getting ready to settle down for the night in the starfruit tree (on the right).

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/020.jpg

Here they are in the tree.

http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/CatwomanofV/029.jpg

Shortly after I took those photos, Carlos went out and scared them away. The woman next door said, "You're scaring the chickens" (in Spanish). Well, that is the point.  :D ;D ;D  They didn't come back the next day. We will see if they REALLY got the hint that we don't want them in that tree. (They eat the fruit.)

Pretty kitchen.  Love the backsplash.

Those chicken and horse pics are surreal.  I mean, it would be something you expect on a farm, and them roosting in a tree.  AND having a Starfruit tree growing in your yard.  So exotic.  Dorothy, we're not in kansas anymore.  ;D
Great photos.

The front looks darker than the back but it really is the same color. You can see Carlos & SIL sitting on the back screened in porch.

Nice pics of the house in PR.  The screened front porch keeps away the mosquitos for sure.

The screened porch is in the back.  ;)

Oh, BTW, I forgot to post this pic from the loft.

As for the mural-we just let the kids create their own with colored chalk.

You can see that it is much better than anything we could buy.

You can see the medicine cabinet has those two baskets. We are opting NOT to use them but I wanted to take a pic with them-just for show.

We did a pretty good job at matching the tile-even though they are different size.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r92/aandcsattic/157_zps97503a13.jpg

Shower (old) tile is on the left and the new stuff we bought is on the right.

We moved the old small vanity into the other bathroom.

You can see the before shots earlier in this thread.

I'll post the fence later.

With the exception of fixing some leaks (and the kitchen faucet needs to be replace), and the toilets need to be addressed (they don't flush well), And maybe a few other things here & there, the house is pretty much DONE!!!!

Thanks. The tile makes the bathroom brighter because the light reflects off the tile-and the mirror.
