Subject: Butterfly photography!

The other weekend I went to an indoor tropical garden where they were hatching butterflies. I got some good pictures. The blue ones were the hardest to get! They closed their wings when they sat down!

That last one isn't familiar, they must not have had it where I went. You're lucky you got to catch pictures of them outdoors, they don't sit still long!

this is a Buckeye butterfly and it also comes here in September.  I've had host plants for it before, but it didn't seem to use them.  My guess is that unless it's spring or summer when the sun is going to be out all day butterflies aren't going to go out and try to mate

You have hibiscus plants? Cool! Do they need to live where it's warm or can they survive anywhere? There are no flowers blooming outside at home and no garden, so there seldom are butterflies here.  :(

If they're small, white or brown, with really powdery wings, they're probably moths you're seeing. I see them all the time in the summer. They get indoors.

I love your pictures! :) "The blues ones" are called Morpho peleides, btw. They either fly, and you can't get a good shot, or they sit and fold their wings, with the blue not showing. I've tried taking a picture myself, but it's hard!

There are some butterfly pictures on my Flickr account (not quite as good as yours, though). Maybe I'll upload them later on.

There are a couple different variants of the blue morpho I've seen. The ones flying around had some black edging with white dots on the blue side of their wings, then there is another kind that has thinner black edging and no dots. Please post your pictures by the way!

8) Amazing! Did you take them?

Yup.

Those are nice, How did you take those pictures so carefully?

Thanks.

Basically, it is called luck. I just shoot and shoot and shoot and hope that one or two come out. The top one I just happen to be in the right place at the right time. The bottom one was cropped.

I took this picture of a butterfly in the Philippines, I do not know the breed.
...or can it be a moth?

I made the necklace above.  A while ago I had ordered the orange flower beads at Amazon and months later found the butterfly in some store and had to get it.

I've been doing some research, and from what I've found I figure it's most likely a young Milionia basalis.

Well done on your research.

If the moth is Japanese based, it has flown many miles?

Thank you, you're being most generous. They're not all outstanding, I know that for a fact. ;)

Those plates of fruit always attract butterflies! I thought the green one was a leaf first, I had to look again to see it.  :P

Not my fault! I can't help it those butterflies are that small and greenish. ;)

Their colors are cammo for nature so predators don't eat them. If you crop the picture then the butterfly is obvious.  :)

That's what I did with the hummingbird pic-otherwise you couldn't tell there was a hummer there at all.

I just saw a buckeye butterfly eating from my Aster flowers.  In the past I've only seen them eat off my butterfly bush in September.  Now let me see what their Host plant is again, I got my first butterfly I know I'm going to have here.

That's cool Ann, I'm looking forward to pictures of your visitors to your garden.  :)

As for me, I try to spend as little time as possible out in nature.  ;D ;D  But I did get to go to a butterfly habitat in Niagara Falls Canada about 13 years ago.  I had a pretty blue butterfly land on my shirt and walk around with me the whole time I was there.  I figured it was because I was wearing raspberry scented perfume. He just thought I was a giant raspberry.

I have the picture, but I can't find what I did with it.  :(

Yeah, sometimes it's helpful to leave the space so that we can tell what's around the subject.

By the way, great pics. :)

I don't see a Buckeye or anything, but there is still some kind of white butterfly around.  I've decided to just get Ca native plants since everything else seems to overheat here on me and die

It's really quite lovely.  I'd like to go back to see it again at some point.

Those pictures are beautiful! Some of the butterflies have such surreal patterns on their wings. I love how the insects look when they touch the fruit, it gives them a sense of humanity and delicacy.

I just want to reach out and help them. They're so small, so powerless, they provide so much beauty that they really do make the world a better place.
