Subject: National anthem quiz (Done)

Written By: Taoist on 08/16/02 at 06:27 a.m.

Here are some lyrics from national anthems from around the world (translated into English)
There are only 9 so limit your answers until people get stuck.
Please don't answer your own country!

1. (Brazil)
There was heard, from Ypiranga's placid banks,
The resounding cry of a heroic people,
And the sun of freedom, in bright rays,
Shone at this moment in the homeland's skies.

2. - Karen (UK)
Scatter our enemies,
And make them fall!
Confound their knavish tricks,
Confuse their politics

3. - Bobo (USSR)
From the southern seas up to polar edge
Our woods and fields were stretched.
One you on light! One you such -
Native land, stored By the god!

4. - Indy Gent (Canada)
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free

5. - Andrew (France)
Listen to the sound in the fields
The howling of these fearsome soldiers
They are coming into our midst
To cut the throats of your sons and consorts

6. - Fuss (USA)
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, now conceals, now discloses?

7. - Philbo (Iraq)
A home land that extended its wings over the horizon,
And wore the glory of civilization as a garment -
Blessed be the land of the two rivers,
A homeland of glorious determination and tolerance

8. - Crazydon (Austrailia)
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands

9. - Bobo (Afghanistan)
The age of tyranny has passed,
The turn of the labourers has come.
We want peace and brotherhood
Between the peoples of the world.
We demand more freedom

:D You got me !  I knew, but was not allowed by the rules of the quiz to answer, that's why I picked yours  ;D (cos' you weren't allowed to answer it...)

Interestingly, whilst it is part of the anthem, we don't 'do' our whole anthem, we stop after the verse that preceeds the one listed  ???

Therefore not many Aussies would know the lyrics of that and subsequent verses, although "Southern Cross' and 'Commonwealth' are giveaways....

FB  :)

PS - Sorry Taoist for hijacking your thread - back to you  :)

Well done, that's the easy one's done
FB - I agree, I wouldn't actually recognise the verse I printed from the UK anthem (Yep, it's in there)

lol - nope
And I do believe that line is about the enemies of <this country>.  The anthem continues to tell of how the valiant country men will whoop their asses!  ;D

HINT - The UK anthem is the only remaining lyric in it's original language

Well, we Americans know that there are four verses to "The Star-Spangled Banner" but most everybody sings only the first verse.  Most Americans have never heard the three other verses sung…

Well, I'm afraid I don't make much of a patriot, I recognized two of them, #4 and...

5. La Marseillaise (France) ... I still remember this from when I was forced to learn this.

O.K. so I'm bored and I've been scrolling through looking for quizzes that haven't been finished yet.

Tao

I think # 2 is the Britih National Anthem

Nice idea for a quiz, Tao

#9 sounds like it ought to be Russia's (or more likely the former Soviet Union)...

#7 "The land of the two rivers" - would that be Iraq, by any chance?

The only one I recognized out of the lot of them was #2 :-(

Is #3 Norway?

Hi Taoist

I'm going to guess that #7 is Iraq.

Based on the 2 rivers in question perhaps being the Tigris and the Euphrates, girdling the land between the 2 rivers, or "Mesopotamia" in Greek, the cradle of civilisation and the location of modern day Iraq.

If this is correct then I've finally found a use for those R.E. lessons I sufferred in the mid 70s.

9 is Afghanistan's national anthem.

Correct I think, (I've forgotten the answers as this quiz is so old).
I'll give the remaining answer.
