It was, in fact...

Hobbes. Choice b. I'll see if I can dig up the exact strip in which he said this. No doubt it was after one of Calvin's complaints about why he isn't as blissfully happy as he obviously deserves to be  ;)

Ah, I found the strip it came from.

It's on page 107 of the anthology "Attack Of The Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons" (sorry, the actual publication date has been removed, so until I fulfil my dream of downloading every strip and generating a full-text index, you're stuck with this).

The strip is set in Winter:

Calvin:
I've decided to become more of a "people" person, and make more friends.

Hobbes:
How Come?

Calvin:
I don't get enough presents.
From now on, I'm devoting myself to the cultivation of interpersonal relationships.
After all, no man is an island. We all need the love and support of others. We're social beings with social needs.
So as of today, my goal is to be at one with my fellow man, to develop and foster those deep connections that... ... just a minute... <bends down to gather snowball>

HEY SUSIE! Heads up! HA HA! <throws snowball> POW

AUGH HELP HELP

<upside down half buried in snow> I've changed my mind, Hobbes. People are scum.

Hobbes:
I think *true* happiness can only be found in the wanton indulgence of animals.

;D
