It was originally "Denise," a 1963 hit for Randy & the Rainbows.

BTW, "Elenore" is spelled correctly because:  1.  I owned the 45 when I was a kid; and 2.  I have a Turtles CD with the song on it, and it has the same spelling.  I actually misspelled the Simon & Garfunkel song (it has an "i", not an "e" in the fourth position; when the song was popular, there was a girl in one of my classes who spelled her name that way and her nickname was "Cece" )…

You are 100 percent right about Elenore, Don, 'cus I just checked my record. The website I checked the lyrics on incorrectly had "Elenor." Either way, they certainly chose to spell it weird, since all the poeple I've known spelled the name Eleanor or Elinor...

Cecilia ought to be Cecelia, but again, they spelled it weird on the record... ::)

Souix,

CrazyDon already mentioned the original artist, so I would have had to have half-credited him. In this case, I did not know the original artist myself, so I was willing to give the credit to whoever got the first answer, so Bobo took it. :)
