Subject: Songs known by an incorrect name

Written By: FussBudgetVanPelt on 11/04/02 at 02:50 p.m.

This is not really a quiz, but it doesn't really fit anywhere else.....

I was thinking yesterday that there are a number of songs out there that are always misnamed by most people.

Some examples are :

Vincent - Don McLean - often called Starry Starry Night

Sounds Of Then - Gang GaJang - often called This Is Australia

There was another that I thought of which has slipped my mind for the moment.

Can you add any more to this list ?

FB  ???

Grand Funk's "I'm Your Captain (Closer To Home)" is misidentified as "Closer To My Home".
The Temps' "Ball Of Confusion" confused listeners with "And The Walls Fall Down".
McCartney's "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" has been known as everything from "Butter Pie" to "Lands Across the Water, Hands Across The Sky" to, of course, "I'm So Sorry, Uncle Albert".
John Stewart's "Gold" was mistitled "Driving Over Canaan" and "People Out There", not to mention "Turning Music Into Gold".
The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" was mistakenly identified as "Roll Baby Roll".
John Denver's "Calypso", some thought, was "Ahoy" or "Hidee-Ho-Hay"
Some Recent examples:
"Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)"-Green Day, mistitled as "I Hope You Had The Time Of Your Life"
"Counting Blue Cars"-Dishwalla, thought to be known as "Tell Me All Your Thoughts On God"
"Whatever"-Godsmack, understandably mistaken as "Go Away", and their single "Keep Away" (AKA "Stay Away From Me" or "Never Misunderstand Me".)

I never got the title of this one wrong but I think I misheard a lyric as "Drivin' home a cannon..." (like a really, really big car)!  LOL! ::)

It was actually "Scarred and Scared", since I bought the .45 disc. But I like Fussy's title better.

What about Enya and Orinco Flow which is popularly known as Sail Away (or even Save the Whale by the hard of hearing!).

I'm sure ther are loads more, if only I could think of them.

I've heard NIN's "Closer" referred to as "Closer to God" or "**** you like an animal"

Erasure's "A Little Respect" called "Respect"

Peter Schilling's "Major Tom (Coming Home)" called "Earth Below Us" or "Floating Waitress"; half the people that used to request that song at the club I worked at didn't even know who sang it.  >:(

Yaz(oo)'s "Situation" - "Move Out" or "The Move Out Song"

I thought of the other song that I couldn't remember at the start :

Joy To The World - Three Dog Night

People keep calling it "Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog"

>:(

Smiths - Panic, is sometimes called 'Hang the DJ'
Radiohead - No Surpises, is sometimes called 'No Alarms'

I've also heard Michael Jacksons - In The Closet, being called 'Give It To You' beacuse of some of the lyrics, but I don't know if this is a common mistake?

This one's a bit more obscure. Godley and Creme's "An Englishman in New York" is most often called "Strange Apparatus" :-/

Strange apparatus
You've never seen
Strange apparatus
Even stranger theme
Street alligators
Big anglophile
Will navigate us
Through a change of style...

Hitchy, I gotta tells ya ....

Never in the history of the board has anyone averaged 100% mention of Godley and Creme in every thread they have posted to date (admittedly only 2 so far)...... ;D

But what a great song..... ;)

Just thought of another:

I've always referred to the Doobie Brothers' "Long Train Running" as "Without Love" because those are the most repeated words in the song.  I also refer to it as "Without Love, Where Would You Be Now?"

Anyone else ever thought how similar this song sounds to "Trampled Under Foot" by Led Zeppelin?
