Subject: UK Geography A-Z lyrics quiz (FINISHED OFF)

Written By: maddog167 on 03/09/03 at 02:09 p.m.

All the lyrics in this quiz contain references to UK place names in the song title or the artist’s name. Again, the song titles form the A to Z, not the place names. The place names are either countries, cities, towns or counties.

20 questions – missing letters are P, Q, U, V, X and Z.

Remember, the UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I think this quiz is probably harder than the USA geography one as many of you outside the UK may never have heard of these places!

Is there some kind of Board record for this, 'cos I reckon that was about 70 seconds from first post to reply Indy.

You're right, of course. Douglas is a town on the Isle of Man.

#1 contains lyrics from "Arms of Mary" by Chilliwack, later horribly redone by Boyzone....but I can't think of a UK geographical location that has anything to do with this....Chilliwack is a little town in BC, Canada...about an hour from where I live and is the place the band was named after...

4 for 4 Taoist, well done :), and you even saved me the trouble of explaining some of the references!

You're right on the song Crazy Don, and also on your geography. But as Fuss mentioned, Crosby is indeed a place in the UK (it's a town near Liverpool).

Correct on both counts Billy, well done.

Preston is a town on the Lancashire coast and Fleetwood is a fishing port also in Lancashire, now sadly on hard times.

Song is correct Jonman, you get the credit for that. However the artist I had in mind was not Chilliwack but the Sutherland Brothers (and Quiver?) who had a hit with this song in the UK. I don't know which of these was the original version though. FBVP got the artist.

Sutherland is a county in Scotland.

It is absolutely a Clash song, mandamoo, the location reference is in the song title in this case.
Keep thinking, I'm sure it will come to you ;).

Correct on both hannahbear, well done. Bolton is a Lancahsire town north of Manchester. I seem to have an unconscious focus on Lancashire in this quiz....

I have never heard of those versions! Thanks for the info. I had always thought that the boys from Chilliwack had written it when in fact it was written by I. Sutherland (according to the Chilliwack album I have it on)...gonna go searching to d/l the other versions!! Great song!!

#8 is Hersham Boys by  :-/ Sham 69

#15 is by David Essex but I can't remember the title.  It's from the musical Evita.  Is it called Oh What a Circus?

Correct in every detail Karen, well done :) !

And what do you mean  :-/ Sham 69, eh? They were great! Well actually...no they weren't. They were really poor. I remember a conversation with my mother when I was trying to defend punk rock to her, then at that moment Sham 69 came on "Top of The Pops" singing "Hurry Up Harry". It rather undermined my argument....

What I meant was not sure that it was by Sham 69.

We used to sing Hurry Up Harry to my dad all the time

I'll bump this one back up (and exceed the limit by 1/2)

19. is 'White man in Hammersmith Palais' by The Clash (Band already named by mandamoo)
Hammersmith is an area of London

Thanks Tao, this quiz needed a bump.
You're right, of course!
I'll also take all limits off 'cos I think the remainder are pretty obscure, particularly for non-UK based people.

Right on both counts Tao, well done.

I think the band who wrote Flower of Scotland was The Corries. At least, that's what Bill McLaren always used to say on the rugby commentary at Scotland internationals...
