Subject: Challenging lyrics quiz (1955-59) (1 left!)

Written By: Crazy Don on 04/24/03 at 06:03 p.m.

OK, if CeramicsFanatic did it for the 1970's and 1980's, then I'm going to do it for the 1950's and the 1960's.  This is the 1950's version, which only covers 1955 through 1959, for two reasons--Joel Whitburn's site only goes back to 1955, and the rock era began in 1955.  All of these lyrics lines came from #1 songs from 1955 to 1959, as verified by Joel Whitburn.  I will give you two words from the lyrics from a #1 song that came out between 1955 and 1959, and you identify the song by title and artist.  Limit three. NO LIMIT!

IG 1.  wooden chair
Jailhouse Rock--Elvis Presley

IG 2.  ring five
(We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock--Bill Haley & His Comets

Jonman 3.  turtle dovin'
That'll Be the Day--Buddy Holly & the Crickets

MNIK 4.  spendin' cash
Yakety Yak--The Coasters

BF 5.  threw eight
Stagger Lee--Lloyd Price

BF 6.  gator lost
The Battle of New Orleans--Johnny Horton

BF 7.  shark bites
Mack the Knife--Bobby Darin

SD 8.  12th Street
Kansas City--Wilbert Harrison

SD 9.  lonesome valley
Tom Dooley--The Kingston Trio

SD 10.  drizzlin' rain
Sixteen Tons--Tennessee Ernie Ford

11.  million trips

SD 12.  dance sensations
At the Hop--Danny & the Juniors

hb 13.  trouble deep
Wake Up Little Susie--The Everly Brothers

SD 14.  brightest stars
Venus--Frankie Avalon

md167 15.  sweet bouquet
It's All in the Game--Tommy Edwards

Good luck.

I should have checked before posting to see if anyone beat me to any of my answers.  Since hannahbear beat me to #13, do get another chance?  I know most of these.

#9 - "Jim Dooley" - the Kingston Trio.  (They did another song, "The Reverend Mister Black", that has the same words, but it was never #1, and was also early Sixties, not Fifties.)

You're generous.  I can't believe I said "Jim Dooley".  Jim Dooley was a TV personality in Miami when I was in grade school (many years ago).  He had a kids' show, and also did commercials for Miami tourism on northern stations. Now that I think of it, I seem to remember some kids I knew doing a parody of Tom Dooley, "Hang down your head, Jim Dooley", (40 years before amiright!) and it must have stuck on a loose synapse in my long-term memory.  Sorry about that!

Now that you've lifted the limit -
#8 -"Kansas City" -  Wilbert Harrison
#10 - "Sixteen Tons" - Tennessee Ernie Ford
Sorry, #11 still has me stumped.
