Subject: Glam Rock lyrics quiz - glittered out

Written By: maddog167 on 10/01/03 at 02:47 p.m.

A quiz in honour of the British glam rock phenomenon of the early-mid 1970s.

It's funny to reflect that one of the major cultural influences of my childhood and early teens were groups of working class British men with wispy feather cut hair, badly applied makeup, silver platform boots and glitter flowers stuck to their cheek. But hey, I loved it. July 1972, down in the YMCA coffee bar during lunch break at judo summer school, the juke box belted out some of these hits and I was hooked...

Usual format - band and artist for the following lyrics please, limit 4.

My Suzi Quatro poster replaced my Kevin Keegan poster in pride of place on my bedroom wall when I was 11. (He was a famous soccer player, for those of you outside the UK).

Thanks jaytee...unfortunately Kenny pipped you to #11.

#9 and #15 are correct, I'll not nitpick but they spelled it "weer"!

#20 - come to think of it, you're right, he did, but did he say "pardon"? This isn't the song I had in mind...this particular burp was brought on by a glass of dandelion wine.

10's correct jaytee, well done :)

I read Noddy Holder's autobiography last year - he said in the book that having accidentally burped on the record he was obliged to do it onstage every time they performed the song.

You'll kick yourself on #1....

That's the one jaytee, my favourite Slade song.

Noddy's autobiography is a few years old, I found a copy in our local library when I was in there with my kids.

Yes!
This is my favourite Christmas song of all time. I can't stand "Merry Xmas Everybody" anymore but when the childrens' choir starts up in this song, for some reason it just gets me in the mood for Christmas.

Hey! Careful maddog - some of us still dress like that!

(Then I wonder why I get strange looks on the train in the morning...!)

Anyway, let's have a go...

#3. Get Down And Get With It - Slade
(ever see that clip of them performing this on the Roger Whittaker(!) show? - Talk about the lion laying down with the lamb! - Sadly, I don't think they duetted on it!)

#12. Solid Gold Easy Action - T Rex
(the 'other' song from Xmas '72 that I loved... along with 'Long-Haired Lover From...' Ah! Let's not go there!)

#16. Angel Face - Glitter Band
(who, when let loose on some 'B' sides, were actually quite an accomplished outfit...)

The remaining one is highly familiar...

3 for 3 Paul, well done :)

I do remember that TV clip of Slade on the Roger Whittaker show...they were still in their skinhead look phase then I think, which Noddy Holder said in his autobiography was a complete sham imposed by their manager. I never saw Slade live but when you hear this record you can just feel what a great live act they must have been. Sadly, Noddy's now stated that he'll never submit to temptation and play with Slade again. His voice is an all time rock favourite of mine.

That last remaining one - it's another hit by a UK band already mentioned in this quiz. The title rhymes with the lyric I chose.
