Subject: maddog's Cryptic Quiz - all done

Written By: maddog167 on 11/12/03 at 03:53 a.m.

Inspired by philbo's cryptic quiz I've had a crack at compiling my own version.
No limits but if they're too easy please leave some for others!

1. Assaulted by an infant re-offender? Presbyterians are going around. (3,2,4,3,4,4 - 7,6)
Claude Prez - Hit Me Baby One More Time - Britney Spears

2. Father's freezing (5,4 - 5,1)
karen/philbo - Daddy Cool - Boney M

3. "Come back! The traffic's appalling!" (6,7 - 3,5)
jaytee - London Calling - The Clash

4. Graceland? It's about 10 blocks so you'll need a good pair of shoes. (7,2,7 - 4)
karen - Walking In Memphis - Cher

5. Where's that stylus needle gone? (4,3,6 - 7)
Mordor - Into The Groove - Madonna

6. Sounds like the unholy offspring of a flatfish / hominid cross breeding experiment (4,3 - 3,3,4)
Paul UK - Sole Soul Man - Sam and Dave

7. He's debonair, erudite, polite and handsome (4,8,3 - 3,6)
Lesley - This Charming Man - The Smiths

8. "We demand more live mice, brotherssss and ssssisssterrsss, or we're going on sssstrike!" (3,5,2,3,5 - 5,5)
Paul UK - The Union Of The Snake - Duran Duran

9. The artistic works of L.S.Lowry (8,2,10,3 - 6,3)
philbo - Pictures Of Matchstick Men - Status Quo

10. Hairy armpits and garlic breath? No thanks, I think I'll stick with my English lass. (8,6 - 3,10)
karen - European Female - The Stranglers

11. Duck feathers appear in the surgery - (4,2,3,7 - 2,8 )
philbo - Down At The Doctors - Dr Feelgood

12. Shhh! I'm trying to get the surviving Gibb twin to sleep! (6,5 - 7,7)
jaytee - Rockin' Robin - Michael Jackson

13. The right one says it's blue and the left one says it's brown. Actually, they're both green. (4,4 - 3,6)
philbo - Lyin' Eyes - The Eagles

14. I can see a cardiologist through this one! (5,2,5 - 7)
ladybug316 - Heart Of Glass - Blondie

15. Men only. That should eliminate the sobbing. (2,5,2,3 - 3,6)
ladybug316 - No Woman, No Cry - Bob Marley

16. Midlife crisis in the clubhouse after a terrible round of golf (10,7,9 - 3,7,6)
jaytee - Nineteenth Nervous Breakdown - The Rolling Stones

17. Special Offer today on fraud and embezzlement - buy one get one free! (5,5,4,4,5 - 2/2)
jaytee - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap - AC/DC

These last 3 clues might only make sense to the Brits, either because of the clue or because the song was a UK hit only

18. Richard Whiteley's last hurrah? (3,5,9 - 6)
philbo - The Final Countdown - Europe

19. Bernard Manning, Jim Royle and Sir Les Patterson but certainly not Tara Palmer-Tompkinson (6,6 - 4)
Lesley - Common People - Pulp

20. About 6 feet tall and 8 feet long, not including the horns and the tail (3,4,2,1,3 - 3,6,5)

3 for 3 philbo, well done.

I enjoyed your "Final Countdown" parody as well, although I suspect it was written before Carol Vorderman's style makeover from "frumpish apparel" to leather trousers etc. which I find rather appealing....

#10 - correct! My apologies to anyone who might take offence at this terrible stereotypical clue...

I'll leave the artist for #2 open for anyone else to guess.

Hello.

#1 appears to be "Hit Me Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears (though I don't get the Presbyterian clue)

Spot on Claude Prez!

I shoehorned the Presbyterians bit in because it's a fairly well known anagram of "Britney Spears".

Picky thing! ;D

Is #3  London Calling - The Clash ??

These types of quizzes are extremely unfair to those of us who can just about manage the Daily Mirror 'quickie' crossword without our brains exploding...

That said...

#6. Soul (Sole!) Man - Sam And Dave
#8. The Union Of The Snake - Duran Duran

hiya jaytee - yes it is!

sorry for appearing picky on the "Rockin' Robin" clue, it's just that I'd put the song title down as (6,5) so that might have confused some people.

I worked out that Boney M fitted the clue but the song I am thinking of doesn't seem their style.  The one I know is sort of rockabilly ish (or possibly doowop) with harmonising vocals.

aah yes - I believe you're thinking of a song of the same title by a different band. The UK doo-wop revival group Darts had a hit in 1977 (I think) with their own song called "Daddy Cool". The Boney M one was more disco (obviously!) - recently used on a TV advert for the Vauxhall Zafira, if you saw that...

Must admit, I googled this one, but #20 is "The size of a cow" by The Wonder Stuff (at least, I had a feeling that was going to be the song title, and couldn't help but look it up)

Well, the dimensions and horns/tail kind of gave the title away - I'd never heard of the song, but it was worth a look, anyway.

...and I think lesley's finished it off, too ;-)
