Subject: Directional Lyrics Quiz (FINISHED!)

Written By: CeramicsFanatic on 05/28/04 at 2:16 pm

That's right, all of the song titles will contain one or more 'direction(s)'...i.e. north, south, east or west.  Name the song and the artist(s).  Limit: 3

Slight correction added to #3.

Good luck!

1. "You sure have saved this man whose soul was in need"
Sylence  (South City Midnight Lady - Doobie Brothers)

2. "She's perched like a parrot"
Sylence  West Intermezzo (I Saw You First) - John Mellencamp]

3. "And everybody does what nobody will allow"
Paul/Bobo  (Goin' Southbound - Stan Ridgway)

4. "With John F. Kennedy and The Beatles"
Indy  (Life In A Northern Town - Dream Academy)

5. "Just to buy a loaf of bread and a box of s'mores"
cornwallis  (Born In East L.A. - Cheech Marin)

6. "Shadows are haunting me, drifting down to the sea"
Sylence  (Northern Skyline - Clannad)
Extra points to Sylence for getting this one.  :)

7. "Life is peaceful there in the open air"
Paul  (Go West - The Village People)

8. "Sitting in the back room waiting for the big boom"
Indy  (Wild, Wild West - The Escape Club)

9. "Below that old white mountain"
Paul  (North To Alaska - Johnny Horton)

10. "Knock twice, rap with your cane"
Mordor  (Here At The Western World - Steely Dan)

11. "She is all that I have left and music is her name"
gemini  (Southern Cross - Crosby, Stills & Nash)

12. "Send my lovin' baby back to me"
nally/Paul  (Western Union - The Five Americans)

13. "Whistling tunes that you know and love so"
Paul  (Southern Nights - Glen Campbell)

14. "Sometimes you're better off dead"
Paul  (West End Girls - The Pet Shop Boys)

15. "Aunts, kids, all the relations"
Mordor  (East West - Herman's Hermits)

Hiya Karen...

#7. 'Go West' - Pet Shop Boys did a huge-selling version over here, but you're probably more familiar with The Village People
#9. 'North To Alaska' - Johnny Horton
#14. 'West End Girls' - Pet Shop Boys (this time!)

#12 is "Western Union", but I don't know the name of the band. So will I get half credit?

Hi Karen...ooh, am I confused now!!

Going by your clues (and if nally's got the title correct), I'd say the artist was 'The Five Americans'...trouble is, I didn't recall those lyrics in their song...

Just had a quick play of it, and no...they're not in there...(??!!)

#13. (With a little of your assistance...) is 'Southern Nights' by Glen Campbell (not one of his better efforts...probably why it didn't immediately register...)

Hi Paul!

Well to be honest I don't have the song in my personal collection, so I picked a line using a lyrics site.  Just now I keyed the line into Google and it came up with "Western Union" by both Elvis Presley and The Five Americans.  If you say that those particular lyrics aren't in the song then the lyrics site I used must be incorrect.  :-\\ :-#13. Correct!  And I agree with you in that it wasn't that great a song.  :)

I think I can see where the confusion lies, Karen - I've just had a gander myself...

The lyrics you provided were by Tepper & Bennett, and this must be the version by Elvis...can't say for certain as I've never heard it!

The Five Americans song was written by three of the group...namely Michael Rabon, Norman Ezell and John Durrill...

Very strange how both have been lumped together as one song...!

And as for #3...well, I'm completely stumped, for one...!!

Well Karen, as regards #3. the artist would be Stan Ridgway, but as to what the song is...still stumped, sad to say...

Apart from Wall Of Voodoo's 'Mexican Radio', I only know one other song of his - 'Camouflage' (which #3. isn't...)

Hiya Paul!

You are correct with the artist!  I have a feeling that this will drag on and on unless I just reveal what the song is called.  Would you like me to do that?  I don't mind....really.  :)

The only Ridgeway song I know the title of (and fits the criteria for the quiz) is Goin' Southbound. Would this be it?
