Subject: Come on "Down"! You're the next contestant for this lyrics quiz! (3 to go)

Written By: Ansky1213 on 03/11/05 at 5:56 pm

The titles of the following songs have "Down," or some variant thereof. Limit 3 removed per person. I'll need the title and the artist. Let's get started!

Hints in Blue!

1) "She could drag me over the rainbow"
Down By The River - Neil Young & Crazy Horse (DanootaAndMe)

2) "Well I'll do anything in this god-almighty world"
This was performed twice at one band's famous, Martin Scorcese-filmed farewell concert.
Baby Let Me Follow You Down - Bob Dylan (bunnypeep)

3) "I said, warden, warden, warden, won't you break your lock and key?"
This band's lead singer died young and in France. The album is named like a US city, and one gender.
Been Down So Long - The Doors (bunnypeep)

4) "I'm in love for the first time"
Don't Let Me Down - The Beatles (gemini61)

5) "Close enough but not too far, maybe you know where you are"
Burning Down the House - Talking Heads (nally)

6) "I'm going down fifty-third street and they're spitting in my face
I'm learning the ropes, yeah I'm learning a trade
The east river truckers is churning with trash
I've got so much money that I'm spending so fast"

This band has been around forever; they played this song regularly on their latest (2003-04) tour for the first time since 1978, when it was written
Album: Some Girls
When The Whip Comes Down - The Rolling Stones (Indy Gent)

7) "Workin’ on a mystery, goin’ wherever it leads"
Runnin' Down A Dream, Tom Petty (CeramicsFanatic)

8) "You can lay your worries down and stay with me"
Lay Down Sally - Eric Clapton (gemini61)

9) "The judge said five to ten but I say double that again"
Clampdown - The Clash (maddog)

10) "Just listen to the rhythm of a gentle bossa nova"
Downtown - Petula Clark (jaytee)

11) "We come home early burning, burning, burning"
From an artist's first album recorded without his longtime band in over a decade. He and his band have been together on and off for the last quarter century.
I'm Going Down - Bruce Springsteen (IndyGent)

12) "He wore black and I wore white"
'Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)' - Nancy Sinatra (Paul)

13) "Though I appreciate the aim, tell Andy Warhol's ghost that he can keep his fame
I'd only use it to make everything the same again
So don't applaud till the end
When I'm not around"
From a Canadian Quintet's 2003 album, this song was only released as a single in Canada
Album: Everything to Everyone

14) "In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head
Listen to the river sing sweet songs To rock my soul
River gonna take me, sing me sweet and sleepy
Sing me sweet and sleepy all the way back home
It's a far gone lullaby sung many years ago
Mama, Mama, many worlds I've come since I first left home"

This is a rare studio masterpeice from a band known for their live performances. Song title is also the title of a movie.
Album: American Beauty

15) "We're leaving together but still it's farewell"
The Final Countdown - Europe (CeramicsFanatic)

16) "Oy, if I get that boy I'm gonna stick him in the house of detention."
Me And Julio Down By The School Yard - Paul Simon (jaytee)

17) "In the winter of '65, we were hungry, just barely alive."
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - The Band (jaytee)

18) "No monkey business in this town, well who do you think you're pushing round?"
it's not about a city...
Down Home Town - ELO (Indygent)

19) "And if they don't let us in through the front we'll come through the side
Cause I don't ever wanna leave the game without
At least saying goodbye
So all my people on the left, all my people on the right
Swing one last time"
A rapper's supposed goodbye from his 2004 album. Song title has a slash in it.
Album: Encore

20) "All my pictures seem to fade to black and white"
'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me' - Elton John (Paul)

Have fun!!

Now I'll have another look ;)

Hello there...

#12. 'Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)' - Cher

#17. 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' - Joan Baez (preferably) or The Band

#20. 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me' - Elton John

You're both right, although I believe Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) was by Nancy Sinatra originally, or at least that's the version I know and love. Also, the Band > > > Joan Baez.

gemini61: Correct and correct

DanootaAndMe: Correct (though I've never heard his version of the song-I only know the Neil Young original) and incorrect. Don't Let Me Down is #4, #2 is something else.

That's about it for the easy ones. The rest are much more difficult. I'll add hints soon if nobody gets any more.

Neil Young was in Buffalo Springfield before setting out with Crazy Horse, I may be mistaken but I thought he did that song with Buffalo Springfield.

The only recording I know is from "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere," which was Neil Young and Crazy Horse, from around 1970.

Had a feeling you'd get that one, maddog. Word on the street is that you're as big a Clash fan as I am  ;)
