Subject: Lyrics Quiz - Nr. 1 Hits from Dutch Top 40 (FINALLY....DONE!!!!)

Written By: FaultyDog on 07/02/05 at 3:05 pm

It's been a while since my last lyrics quiz (there's still work to be done there, people!) so I think it's time to come up with a new one. I've decided to make this one somewhat easier to maybe set a record (at least for my quizzes! ;) )

What I want you to do is give me the titles of the songs and the band/artist. One artist/band is listed twice. Limit = 3 for now.
To help you along a little: the songs are listed chronologically.
I've added some information in brackets. In
black: year and number of weeks held #1 position in the Netherlands, in blue: highest chart position in Billboard Hot 100.

Good luck and no cheating, please!

These are the ones I was looking for. As to #21: I always check and doublecheck my lyrics before posting a quiz, so I'm sorry if the lyrics aren't quite correct - but this is what I've got. ;)

I've decided to give you some hints to help you along in finding the titles and the connection.
First of all: the titles are listed chronologically.

Furthermore, the theme is NOT in the titles, nor in the artists or lyrics. In fact, I don't think ANY of you can actually KNOW what the theme is. You would have to guess. So what other (blatantly obvious  ::)) connection can you think of, bearing in mind that knowing the theme won't help you find the missing titles....?  ???

Subject: Re: Hidden Theme Lyrics Quiz

I think the words are actually "Sometimes silence seems so loud", so it's not that different really. :)

So is the theme something really obscure like "the first record issued by that label"

or "good songs kept off the number one spot by rubbish songs"

or "songs whose bass lines have been ripped off on a rap song"?

I would never go for something as obscure as that! (No, really - I wouldn't)

or "good songs kept off the number one spot by rubbish songs"

Now you're on to something! You've got two words right there - and it's not "good songs kept off the" or "spot by rubbish songs"..... ::)

So maybe one or two (or more) did, but not ALL. There's only one country where they all went to nr 1. Now what country could that possibly be...? ::)

Unfortunately, that's not the one.. :\'(.. Long Cool Woman only reached #24 back in 1972.  :-\\

It is Hollies, though, so you've earned half a point, but this one's from 1973.

Hi Henk...

Well, even with some very good clues, I'm stuck on a few (don't even ask me about any of those post-1990...!), but I've managed to pull out a few...

#7. 'Cocaine In My Brain' - Dillinger
Which I've actually got on a Dutch issued CD! Was semi-popular here, but never charted (obviously, our radio wouldn't touch it with that title!)...I'm sure that 'a knife, a fork...' refrain was sampled in the 80s...

#11. The magnificent 'State Of Independence' - Donna Summer

#16. The not-so magnificent 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You' - Michael Jackson & Siedah Garrett
...although she was never credited over here...
Was that single she did with Dennis Edwards called 'Don't Look Any Further'? If so, that was made in 1984, a big soul boy fave here...

I believe Dillinger also recorded a song called Marijuana in my brain, which for obvious reasons flopped about everywhere.
The refrain may have been sampled (just about everything gets sampled one way or another!), but if so I've missed it.

#11. The magnificent 'State Of Independence' - Donna Summer

Is also correct.

#16. The not-so magnificent 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You' - Michael Jackson & Siedah Garrett
...although she was never credited over here...

Well, I'm not very enthousiastic about this duet either.
"Don't look any further" was the other duet I was referring to; it may have been recorded in 1984, but it was charted in the Netherlands in 1987 (around the same time "I just can't stop loving you" reached #1; the Dennis Edward duet reached #12).

Thank you very much for your contributions. Another hint: the male artist in #13 comes from the same clan as the male artist in #16 ;)

Thought so! I find it also charted here when re-issued in '87, so that's when it obviously made it big across Europe...

Barring here...it's never cracked the Top 40 here on either occasion, but more people remember it than a lot more 'successful' 80s stuff...

(And yes, it's been sampled too...!!)
