Written By: FaultyDog on 11/05/05 at 12:31 pm

...so you'll have no troubles with this lyrics quiz. 8)

All songs are classified as "soul" (but you may find a song or two not quite fitting in, depending on your own definition).
I've tried my best to find the original artists with the songs, but you know how hard that is with this genre of music...so please don't get mad at me for missing one or two. :-\\

#7 is "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)"; I know that James Taylor covered it in the mid-70's, but he's not a "soul" artist. I'm drawing a blank on the original performer right now. :-\\

#9. "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted" by Jimmy Ruffin. (For the record, Paul Young covered it in the early 90's.)

That's all I can figure out now. I also know the title for #8, but I know that the Beatles did NOT originally perform it.

Quite right, Jeff...but allow me to re-draw your 'blank'...

The artist was Marvin Gaye (and Junior Walker did a corker of a version too)

That's all I can figure out now. I also know the title for #8, but I know that the Beatles did NOT originally perform it.

Right again...and more Motown...

This one was 'Money' and was originally done by Barrett Strong...

...which ties in nicely with...

#4. 'War' - Edwin Starr (because Mr. Strong co-wrote it!)

#25. 'You'll Never Know' - Hi-Gloss (terrific one-hit-wonder!)

2. Please, Mr. Postman-The Marvellettes
3. Ain't Too Proud To Beg-The Temptations
23. Baby, Where Did Our Love Go?-Diana Ross and The Supremes

Well, you got 1.5 correct there, Jeff. :) And for the record, #9 was also covered by Colin Blunstone in 1981.

Ah! That was it! Thanks. But the full name of the song is "Money (That's What I Want)" and the answer has been posted just like that. :)

Oops! Missed this one... :-[

You're right on #12 (was thinking of another artist, but you know...hard to tell who did the original  :-\\), but #6 is not Patches. And it's not by Clarence Carter. So basically: you've got that one wrong.  :(
To help you along: it's a song by a girl group (not the Supremes, not Gladys Knight & the Pips).

Why not, indeed...!!

#6. 'Jimmy Mack' - Martha & The Vandellas (before Motown decided to insert her surname on the records...!)

#13. 'I'm Doing Fine Now' - New York City, later covered by The Pasadenas

#22. 'With This Ring' - The Platters...an almost different line-up from the 50s group, but a super record nonetheless...
