Subject: Henk's Rather Easy Covers Quiz (GOOGLE SEARCH IS ON)

Written By: FaultyDog on 12/16/05 at 3:18 pm

Here's (yet) another quiz that I hope you'll enjoy.
All songs in this quiz have also been performed by Dutch artists (so there's the connection), and in most cases the "Dutch" version did better in our charts than the "foreign" version.
Your task is simple: name the song and name the original artist. Limit = 3

BUT WAIT...! .....There's a catch (or two)  ::) because there's two songs in this quiz that don't quite fit in... A breach of pattern, if you like. Can you find those songs? And do you know why they're "different" from the others?
THREE BONUS POINTS if you get it right!

THREE BONUS POINTS go to Paul

And there's more: I'll award FIVE BONUS POINTS if you can name any of the Dutch artists that performed the songs mentioned in this quiz. (Nearly all of them are unknown to you all, I think - but who knows...)
FIVE BONUS POINTS go to: Paul (twice, for naming Bolland and Forrest)

In order to find the Dutch artists for the other songs I allow you to Google search for ONE POINT per correct answer.

Good luck everybody! :)

Yes ,the streak is still alive.
"Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" is such a tough song
so many people have covered it, Andy Williams,Tommy Garrett,
Lauren Hill and even the Easybeats.I didn't know who was the
original so I just took a stab,oh well.

You win.  ;) I've just done some checking and it turns out the song was released simultanously by three different artists in 1960: John Leyton, Ray Peterson and Ricky Valance.

In The Army Now is the song I'm looking for. However, Status Quo is not the original artist.

They wasn't, but they had a huge hit with it in Britain...

If memory serves, the original was by Bolland (who also wrote it...)

#14. 'Mockingbird Hill' - tons of artists including Les Paul & Mary Ford, Patti Page and a strange 'ska'-type version by The Migil Five...

#17. 'Fantasy Island' - Tight Fit

I'll hazard a guess at the two 'odd ones out'...

#1 and #17...because I think this pair were originally Dutch hits that became 'cover' hits for artists in another country, as opposed to the other way around...(not sure who originally done 'Fantasy Island' though!)

...and reaching #11 in The Netherlands, whereas the original...

If memory serves, the original was by Bolland (who also wrote it...)

...indeed by Bolland (brothers Rob & Ferdi Bolland, who also were responsible for the remix of Rock Me Amadeus) didn't even make it to Top 40 in 1981.

You've totally got it, Paul!   :D So the bonus points are yours. :)

You've also mentioned the artists I had in mind for #14 (Les Paul & Mary Ford and/or Patti Page - though the Migil Five version was a bigger hit over here). Still, the Dutch cover version was the biggest hit of them all, reaching #1 spot in 1993.

As for the original version of Fantasy Island... that song was released the same year (1982). It was one of the songs competing in Dutch preliminaries for the Eurovision Song Contest, ending up in second place (behind the terrible "Jij en ik" by Bill van Dijk).

I've filled in the blanks on numbers 13, 16 and 20.

I hereby allow you to use Google search to find the Dutch artists who performed the songs in this quiz. I'll award you ONE POINT per correct answer.
