Subject: Songs That Tell A Story - Quiz - The End!

Written By: maddog on 11/27/06 at 5:42 am

It's been a long time since I posted a lyrics quiz so here's one with a theme.

All of these lyrics are taken from songs that tell a story - can you identify the song and artist?

It's no surprise that there's a predominance of songs from the Country genre but there's a few other genres represented, with recurring themes of jealousy, murder and revenge.

In actual fact...

I was going to credit dear ol' Maxie at first, but (and my 'anorak-ometer' is going off the scale here) he doesn't actually say this line in his version...

(Hangs head in utter shame for admitting to having this record!)  :-[

#14 Eighth day - Hazel O'Connor

It's not that one karen. I can see where this came from though as in that song there's a line that goes something like "Behold, what I have done"

#25 two Little Boys - Rolf Harris

Yes, that's right :).

#13 Running Bear - The Dickies? (probably wrong on both title and artist!)

The song title's correct but it's not the artist I was looking for.
The Dickies may well have done a cover version of this but I don't remember it. However I did see The Dickies play live at The Lyceum theatre London in July 1978, supporting The Runaways. They didn't play this song then but they did do their "Banana Splits" theme song cover at breakneck punk speed.

#11...A Boy Named Sue....Johnny Cash?

#17...Bonnie & Clyde....Georgie Fame?

All good loki, except the artist you put for #10 is not the one I had in mind.
I honestly don't know if Jimmy Cliff did a cover of this song, are you thinking of the reggae star Jimmy Cliff who sang "The Harder They Come, The Harder They Fall"?
I'm struggling to imagine a reggae version of "Big Bad John" though  ;D, so I'll leave this open for another guess at the artist, hope that's OK!

Yeah, I was happy to get these two songs in, actually it was listening to "Copperhead Road" recently that gave me the idea for this quiz.

Care to enlighten us all on what the actual story is behind this (excellent) song ;)? On second thoughts, don't, we could argue about it forever....

Errrmmmm.....possibly but again, it's not the one on my iPod and that's the version I'm most familiar with, I think it's the orginal, so I'll leave it open for that artist - OK?

Hi again, Graham...

Two songs about the Great British workforce from the mighty Bernard Cribbins...

#23. 'Right Said Fred'

#26. 'Hole In The Ground'

#28. 'Tobacco Road' - Nashville Teens

#29. 'Patches' - Clarence Carter (which doubtless Zella would have answered were she here...)

While I'm here, I'll have a shot at those two artists...

#10. Jimmy Dean

#13. Johnny Preston (with the Big Bopper making the noises in the background)

Somewhere on the west coast of America, I think!  ;)

No, she doesn't come here as much as she used to, which is a real pity...she was last seen on Fuss's birthday thread somewhere in the PPP...

'Cricket'? What is this 'cricket' that you speak of?  ;)

Well, it was nice having the Ashes for a short while...I hope we're not waiting almost another two decades to 'get 'em back'...
