Subject: L is for...Last Names [answers revealed]

Written By: Henk on 02/11/07 at 3:35 pm

Back on the track...which leads us to letter L. This time all song titles contain a last name.
In just under 50% the title also contains (a) first name(s) or initials.
Can you name the artist and song?
Hope I haven't made it too hard this time... :-\\

Have fun and good luck! :)

Hello Henk   :)

You bloody beauty .... I'm here first!!

#3  Bad Bad Leroy Brown - Jim Croce
#4 Me and Mrs. Jones - Billy Paul
#6 Ma Baker - Boney M
#7 Mr. Jones - Counting Crows

Great quiz  :)

Feels good to be the first, eh? And you've got four correct answers, Janine! :)

You bloody beauty, I'm here, er...second!

#2. 'Dance With Mr. Domino' - Fats Domino (surprisingly enough!)
#5. 'I Feel Like Buddy Holly' - Alvin Stardust

Great stuff as always, Henk...

Thanks Paul! :) Your four answers are spot-on (as always!). I'm a bit surprised to see #2 going so fast, as it wasn't a big hit anywhere.

Excellent quiz Henk :)

7 | Mr. Jones - Counting Crows
19 | Robert De Niro's Waiting - Bananarama
28 | Addams Groove - Hammer
36 | Dr. Jones - Aqua

Hi Jason!  :) Your answers are all correct, but Janine beat you to #7.  :( Well, there may be one left that you know.

11 | The Ghost of Tom Joad - Bruce Springsteen
12 | Mrs. Jones - Herman's Hermits
16 | Mrs. Jackson - Outkast
21 | Jimmy Mack - Martha & The Vandellas

Hello Beth. :) I can only give you 3.5 points for these answers (although #16 is actually Ms Jackson). #12 is the right artist, but not the correct title. Good job on getting #11, btw! ;)

Hi Henk, one to start.

Three more.

#29...Memo From Turner....Mick Jagger?

#34...Frankenstein....Edgar Winter?

#39...Eleanore Rigby....The Beatles?

What can I say, Kevin..? They're all right! :) "Frankenstein" never made it to Dutch Top 40, so I was a bit surprised to find out it hit #1 in U.S.

Hi there Henk

#20 Mr Wendell - Arrested Development
#23 The Ballad of Chasey Lain - Bloodhound Gang
#36 Doctor Jones - Aqua
#40 Alexander Graham Bell - Sweet

Hello Graham! :) You've done well with those four - they're all correct. Unfortunately Jason beat you to #36.

The Sweet has had 12 Top 10 hits in The Netherlands, but Alexander Graham Bell wasn't one of them. It was in fact one of their least popular tunes (I believe this also applies for UK).

#31 Jackie Wilson Said - Dexy's Midnight Runners

It may be just one answer, but it's one correct answer, Karen! 8)

#3 - Bad Bad Leroy Brown by Jim Croce
#7 - Mrs.Jones by Counting Crows
#12 - Mrs. Brown, You Have A Lovely Daughter by Hermans Hermits
#39 - Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles

I wish I could give you four points for those ('cause they are all correct), but unfortunately 3.5 were already answered. :(
So all that's left is half a point for the (nearly) correct title for #12. Hope that's not too disappointing... :-\\

17. Alice Long - Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart
30. Mrs. Vanderbilt - Paul McCartney and Wings
37. MacArthur Park - Richard Harris

and I think #26 must be Tony Joe White - Roosevelt and Ira Lee

Excellent job, Gaylon! 8) All four are correct. I was afraid both #17 and 30 would be left unanswered. Neither of those reached Top 40 in UK or U.S., if I'm correct. Yet Alice Long reached #15 in Dutch Top 40, and Mrs Vandebilt even made it to #7.

Rats!  I'm too late on this one!  :(

Aww... sorry to hear that, Karen. :( You sure you don't know (the artist for) #27 or #33? :-\\

Maybe it's just me but....

When I open the first page of the quiz, there is no logo to click :(  That was in Firefox.

I opened the same page in IE7, there is a logo (of sorts) - it is the dreaded red X...

Nonetheless, I can click on it, but when I do, I get this :

Warning: fopen(data/bw/bw_64582.php): failed to open stream: Read-only file system in /home/cabin/public_html/members_vb/includes/db.class.php on line 76
Could not open data/bw/bw_64582.php for writting.

Correct on the artists, Beth. :)

Zager and Evans are one hit wonders almost everywhere, I think - but in The Netherlands, the song from this quiz reached #30, so they're not really OHW over here.
In Dutch Top 40, this was the biggest hit for Marianne Faithfull, reaching #15 in 1979/1980. Not that that's of much help to you...

Looks like I have to give the answers away... I did think #14 and 25 would probably be too obscure (although you never know), but I was hoping you (or DJ Midas) would recognize #13 and/or 18. Which leaves us with #32...well, I figured Paul... :-\\

Bames Brown...? ???

Never mind - I see it doesn't ring any bells. I guess the song never made it to Canadian charts. It did hit #59 in U.S., though, and I'm sure I've mentioned it before (being the first "rave" record to ever hit the Billboard Hot 100, in 1991).

As for #18... you might know the artist for their song "Das Boot".

I don't think anyone knows the remaining ones, so here are the answers:

13. Dutch producer Denzil Slemming with a tune about the hardest working man in show business.
James Brown Is Dead - L.A. Style

14. Zager and Evans, with a song about a girlfriend with a fictitious name.
Cary Lynn Javes - Zager & Evans

18. German submarine (aka Alex Christensen) wishing they were related to a 1960s U.S. president.
        I Wanna Be A Kennedy - U96

25. Her only claim to fame is having a far more popular brother (who also features on the "Happy Feet" soundtrack). This song is about a singer who had a hit with "1919 Main Street".
Mark Anthony's Tune - Tyka Nelson (Prince's sister)

LOL I originally meant James Brown.  I should have known the answer to #13.  I know of that song, but your clip is the first I'd heard what it sounded like

FYI: the clipping I used is the original 7"mix (which has vocals). I myself only heard that version maybe two or three times. The more popular version (over here anyway) has no lyrics except for the title.

I look forward to your M quiz 8)
