Subject: 100% Can Con Audio Quiz! [Answers revealed]

This Quiz 100% Can Con

I'm a bit stuck with my alphabet series, so here's a little treat inbetween. 8)
All songs in this quiz are by Canadian artists, and all but one made it to Dutch Top 40.
It might take a Canadian to answer some of these...but there's plenty of those around. ;)

Limit = OFF!!.

Good luck and have fun! :)

You're very welcome. :) Of course it's much easier to make a quiz with Canadian artists that made Dutch Top 40 than vice versa. ;)

Actually...it hit #21 in 1976, so you're wrong - but I think you're still pleased with that result! ;D

30 | Shakin' All Over - The Guess Who (Their very first hit.  Burton Cummings doesn't appear in this song as he didn't join the band until their 5th single)
31 | Somewhere Down the Crazy River - Robbie Robertson (Robbie's first hit as a solo artist)
45 | Baby It's You - Promises (which sadly did absolutely nothing in the Canadian Chart)

I am going to save the bonus guess because the one I Want to guyess is one I am saving for later.  lol

27. Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf

I was glad to see this in the quiz.  Steppenwolf are technically an American group, but what many don't know is they are actually Canadian.  The group originally formed in Canada under the name 'Jack London and the Sparrows' but when they relocated to the States in the late 60s, they broke-up, only to re-form under the name Steppenwolf.
They still continue to tour under the name 'John Kay & Steppenwolf'

Hi there Henk

I only know 1 and 1/2, I think....

#34 Wash Your Face In My Sink - Jazz Warriors

#37 The Langley Schools Music Project - but I don't recognise the song.

I've heard some other recordings by #37, some of them are really uplifting, to hear kids play and sing with such enthusiasm, however it's the sort of thing that you couldn't listen to a whole album!
I reckon this is definitely the one that did *not* make the Dutch Top 40 ;)!

Didn't know that...(but then, I only have information on UK Top 40). Anyway, it wasn't a big hit.

And I bet it was 'A Routine Day'?  Even though Klaatu had several big and small hits within Canada, they always seemed to be better known Internationally

Klaatu would be the obvious choice. I mean, #82...that's easy to beat. And to be honest, they did...marginally. But they never made Top 40, so you're still wrong.

Which means I can't give away the bonus anymore, 'cause the answer would be Klaatu, and I already said that. :-\\ :\'(

Only one...?  :-\\ That's a bit disappointing. I was thinking you'd know at least three more (#12, #13 and #23).

Well, I'd better bring out the hints then.

Those ones sound so familiar, but I can't quite place them :(

A guess on the song in #3 .. is it 'Girl, I've Been Hurt'?

No, it's not Lime. And it isn't Voggue either, in case you were considering them. The answer is in the (bolded) initials... ::)

Oh, what the heck...

07. This singer is better known for his collaboration with Finnish dj Zyntherius, when they remade a Corey Hart song. This song however is a remake of a Nelly song.
Now that you mention it, this sounds a lot like "Hot in Herre." I think it is, even. I don't have any idea who the singer is, though.

Right you are! :) It is indeed "Hot In Herre".
Now for the artist... funny you should have a Corey Hart quote for a sig line and not know who remade the very tune.

12. It's Miquel Brown with a song that's Nearly 100%...
How about 99.9%?

Close...but not Perfect... ::)

13. One of the many remixes of a song about the absence of sounds, by Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber with additional singer.
Is it called "Silence" then?

Correctamundo. 8)

21. Reggaeband around producer John Forbes, with a song about what's now called a triple jump. One of their other songs is Piccadilly Hop.
Sorry, I've got nothing.

I wouldn't worry if I were you. I'm beginning to think the song only charted in The Netherlands.

23. It's Tony DaCosta, Allan Coelho and Paul Silva, with a song about what you could call dangerous liaisons.
Are they called TAP, then? And the song... um... "Risky Business?"

TAP is getting very close, but the title is still (way) off. Again, looks like this song only charted in The Netherlands.

37. It's Lucille Starr with a song about a girl, and it's not Jolie Jacqueline.
Can't get any further with this one...

39. Two sisters with a song about a holy person. One of the two wrote "Heart Like A Wheel", as sung by Linda Ronstadt.
No idea ... I don't think the title's gonna be in English, so I don't imagine I'll be able to randomly attack it that way.

42. This song sold over 1.5 million copies in 35 countries and was translated in over 70 languages (although I don't recall ever having heard a Dutch version...). The singer/songwriter is included in the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.
No clue

And I'm afraid I'll have to give those three away too.

I know Heart Like A Wheel was written by one of the McCarrigle Sisters, so the song in #39 must be by Kate and Anna McCarrigle.  I only really know one song by them, and it's not the one in #39 :(

Well, according to my information it is. :) (FYI: "Sunglasses At Night" only hit #35 over here, so that wasn't a big hit either)

It was Anna who wrote "Heart Like A Wheel", so you're quite right. 8) This song was their only Dutch Top 40 hit, I'm afraid, so if you're not familiar with it I'll have to give it away.

I don't expect the remaining ones to be answered anymore, so...

10. The artist is Neil Young, but do you know the song?
The song is Comes A Time

12. It's Miquel Brown with a song that's Nearly 100%...
The song is Close To Perfection

21. Reggaeband around producer John Forbes, with a song about what's now called a triple jump. One of their other songs is Piccadilly Hop.
Hip Skip And Jump - Chalawa (yeah, I realize the hint may have put you on the wrong foot...but does it really matter?)

23. It's Tony DaCosta, Allan Coelho and Paul Silva, with a song about what you could call dangerous liaisons.
        My Forbidden Lover - Tapps

37. It's Lucille Starr with a song about a girl, and it's not Jolie Jacqueline.
        The song is Colinda

39. Two sisters with a song about a holy person. One of the two wrote "Heart Like A Wheel", as sung by Linda Ronstadt.
Complainte Pour Ste Catherine - Kate & Anna McGarrigle

41. Probably the hardest one in this quiz. I don't think it was a hit in Canada, so I'll give you the answer.
        I'm Lonely - Hollis P. Monroe

42. This song sold over 1.5 million copies in 35 countries and was translated in over 70 languages (although I don't recall ever having heard a Dutch version...). The singer/songwriter is included in the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Comme J'Ai Toujours Envie d'Aimer - Marc Hamilton

That explains... I noticed they'd been touring with Loudon Wainwright (a lot!), but since the sites I visited were all in French I failed to make the connection.

The sisters are still touring and recording, aren't they?

They do still record, yes

Colinda by Lucille Starr was the only one that charted of those remaining.  I can't find a chart position for that Neil Young song, so I can only assume it was not popular here.  From his album 'Comes A Time', the track 'Four Strong Winds' did chart though

Thanks for the info. :) It's always amazing to find acts that weren't popular in their home country but did well abroad (like Tapps or Lucille Starr in this case). I take it though that Neil Young did manage to score other solo hits (other than the one you mentioned). ???

Neil Young did have lots of hits yes.  I'm not sure what his biggest was in Canada, but broken down, his biggest hits per decade were:

70s: Heart of Gold
80s: American Dream (with Crosby, Stills and Nash)
90s: Harvest Moon

Here's more trivia for you about some of the songs in your quiz:

- By the time Love Inc. became International success in the 2000s, they had long since called it quits.  'You're a Superstar' was a Canadian hit in 1998

- 'Shakin' All Over' was released in Canada under the name Chad Allan and the Expressions, which was the original name of the Guess Who before Burton Cummings joined

- Legendary producer/pianist David Foster, best known for 'Love Theme From St. Elmo's Fire' was the keyboardist for Skylark

:)

Neil Young only scored hits in the 1970s over here, Heart Of Gold being the biggest one (solo). CSN&Y also only hit the charts in the 1970s; their biggest hit was Teach Your Children.

Some of this I already knew, some I didn't. The "Love Theme From St. Elmo's Fire" never was a hit over here.

Most of the artists in my quiz were one hit wonders over here, with a few exceptions, like:

Lucille Starr
The French Song (Quand Le Soleil Dit Bonjour Aux Montagnes) was a big hit in 1964/1965. It was charted for 32 weeks and hit #1 spot.
Colinda (b/w Crazy Arms) hit the charts in 1965, peaking at #3. It was charted for 21 weeks.
Jolie Jacqueline also was a hit in 1965. It was charted for 10 weeks and peaked and #19.
Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes (with Bob Regan) was a minor hit, only staying in charts for 2 weeks and peaking at #29.

R. Dean Taylor
Gotta See Jane was the least of his chart successes. It hit #32 and stayed in charts for 5 weeks.
Taos, New Mexico hit #22 in 1972 and was charted for 4 weeks.
There's A Ghost In My House hit #29 in 1974 and was also charted for 4 weeks.
Window Shopping got stuck in bubbling under section.

Paul Anka
He scored a total of 16 Top 40 hits. The most successful ones were Diana, Lonely Boy, Tonight My Love Tonight and Dance On Little Girl.
His final Top 40 entrance was (You're) Having My Baby, a duet with Odia Coates in 1974.

I think it goes without saying that Avril Lavigne, Nickelback, Nelly Furtado and Celine Dion weren't OHW either...
