Subject: Original Hits! Original Stars! <ANSWERS REVEALED!>

Written By: whistledog on 03/26/07 at 1:27 pm

Remember the days of K-tel and similar compilation albums of the 70s and 80s?  In Canada, we had lots of great ones, so in true classic style, I ripped the songs directly from the vinyl to proudly present to you ...

A few of the songs in this quiz might be a bit obscure, but you never know, I could be wrong.  I hope you enjoy :)

NOTE:  Quiz may not be compatible with FireFox but will work with Internet Explorer

Poor old K-Tel (and Ronco) were killed off here years ago by the unabated success of numerous 'Now' compilations (they're currently up to #65, or something!)

#23. 'Look Away' - Big Country
#30. 'Up In A Puff Of Smoke' - sounds a bit like Diana Ross, but it's actually Polly Brown
#33. 'Juicy Fruit' - Mtume
#39. (The dreaded) 'Hands Up! Give Me Your Heart' - Ottawan

All correct Paul! :)

In Canada, K-tel ended in 1984, and was taken over by Quality Records (It's Canadian parent label), lasting through to the mid 90s competing with similar label Polytel.  I don't even know what the main label for compilations here is anymore.  lol

Ah! Quality Records...I've seen a couple of their imports over here!

Not sure whether they're still going, but I gather they were quite a long-stayer in the record market...

Quality Records started operation in 1950 i believe.  For the most part, it was an artists label, releasing many 12" singles by lots of artists that were almost unhead of, as well as standard type "Best of" albums by lots of popular 50s and 60s era artists.  When they took over for K-tel in 1984, they released various artists complations about every every 3 or 4 months, lasting until around 1997 when they merged with BMG Music (a parent label of RCA)

Nah, she was a one hit wonder in Canada with 'Automobile'.  It still shocks me how popular it was in Canada, but then again, it always comes as a surprise to me when International artists find big success in Canada, yet somehow escape the American chart.  The list of songs that did that could fill a novel.  lol

04 | A popular wisdom phrase by a group that's good to listen to in the third day of a working week
Must be a song by Wednesday. I probably was wrong about it sounding familiar, but I really like the clip, whatever it is.

09 | A 1983 Australian hit about males in a city
Let's call it "Boystown"

21 | No hints on this one because I am shocked no one knows it
Well fine then

29 | An Australian singer, whose solo career never took off in America.  "He's the voice" who had several big and small hits in the UK and Canada.  This particular song was a modest hit in Canada in 1989
Must be John Farnham

46 | This track by an un-godley British group cremed the UK and American chart when it reached the Canadian Top 40 in 1981
