Subject: Some AUSSome KIWuIz... [Answers Revealed]

Written By: Henk on 05/05/07 at 2:17 am

http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/2/17/785141/AussieKiwiLogo.gif

After finishing my Can Con quiz, I figured it would be nice
to do a quiz on Australian / New Zealand artists too.
So here it is...a handful of All Blacks and a truckload of Soccaroos...
Nearly all of these songs made Dutch Top 40.
You'll probably know most of them, 'cause there's some big names in here.

Here's a bonus question, worth 5 points:
What song in this quiz made the biggest impact in Dutch Top 40? ???

Limit = OFF! Enjoy!!

Hints!

11. Australian boy band (1987 - 1995), biggest hit in Australia: "Say Goodbye". The song in this quiz hit #27 in Australia.
17. Australian dance collective, led by Noel Burges and Simon Lewicki. Part of their name is a popular bean dish. Can't find any chart info.
22. A song by The Black Sorrows (about how unpredictable affection can be) that I don't think made the charts in Australia.
24. OK, they're NOT Australian nor from New Zealand... Twin brothers (last name Seymour), both first names rhyme with dark. Probably not a hit anywhere else.
33. Flash And The Pan, with a song about a nocturnal male.
41. Helen Reddy, singing a song by Carole King & Toni Stern that might as well have been titled A Happy Tune. Don't know if this song charted anywhere else but The Netherlands.

1. A Little More Love - Olivia Newton-John
9. I Go to Rio - Peter Allen
18. I Want You - Savage Garden
23. Step Back in Time - Kylie Minogue

I'll guess "Torn" for the bonus question.

Cool quiz Henk! :)

15 | Under the Milky Way - The Church
27 | How Bizarre - OMC (In Canada, this was a #1 hit in December of 1996.  It didn't peak in the US until mid '97)
44 | Put the Needle on It - Dannii Minogue
45 | Age of Reason - John Farnham

Hiya Henk, another very enjoyable quiz, thanks  :).

#8  Kiss Kiss - Holly Valance (the song was a rip-off of some Euro hit, I think, but she is undeniably very easy on the eye....)
#19 Highway To Hell - AC/DC
#34 Sunscreen - Baz Luhrmann
#46 Into Temptation - Crowded House (still my favourite gig of all time, Crowded House at a small venue in Manchester, 1990, the day after Neil Finn left the band in mid-tour!)

P.S. I have a horrible feeling that #8 might have been the biggest hit in Holland?

So far so good, everyone (except for Luke being slightly off with the numbers - giving you credit anyway  ;))

I am gonna have a stab at your bonus question and say "Air Supply - All Out Of Love"

:)

I'll guess "Torn" for the bonus question.

P.S. I have a horrible feeling that #8 might have been the biggest hit in Holland?

These are all good guesses, but nothing more than that, I'm afraid. Keep trying, though! :)

FYI: Air Supply only reached #27, "Torn" hit #2 and Holly Valance got stuck at #24.

Here's some trivia for ya...

# 41  Winter In America - Doug Ashdown

(which is actually #40... ::))

The only two countries where this song was a hit in their respective charts were Australia and The Netherlands.

#8  Kiss Kiss - Holly Valance (the song was a rip-off of some Euro hit, I think, but she is undeniably very easy on the eye....)

True, on both accounts. The original version of the song is called "Simarik" by Turkish singer Tarkan, a #3 hit in Dutch Top 40 in 1999. The song was already several years old when it finally hit our charts (not sure how many years, though).

Both are correct, Kevin, but I'm afraid #38 was already answered. :(

Also, the English version ("Kiss Kiss") was released as a single by Stella Soleil before Valance got a hold of it. For a while it was available free from Soleil's official website, but even that promo failed to help her do much.

Well, I seem to have made a slight mistake... :-[

Apparently, #24 in this quiz is NOT by an Australian or New Zealand artist. I was led to believe that the artists in question (twin brothers) were related to one of the members of Crowded House (in which case they would've been Australian). As it turns out, they only share a last name.

I don't have any other answers for the remaining songs, but if I may take another crack at the bonus, I will go with "Everybody's Free (to wear sunscreen)" just because it would be the odd one to be correct.

Baz Luhrmann & Lee Perry hit the Dutch charts in 1999 and they got stuck at #29. So...sorry, but you're wrong. :(

Bingo! :) It's not their most popular tune, but they only had two Top 40 hits over here and I didn't want to use "Friday On My Mind" (again).

BTW: the song has been used for decades for a tv ad campaign by P&C (dress stores) in The Netherlands , so anybody age 30 and over should known this tune over here.

Three for three, Amanda! :)

It's funny to see how these artists have had hits in The Netherlands that apparently were no hits down under.
I really wish I had a book on Australian charts (if there is one)...it would come in handy, with hardly any information on the 'net.

I had stumbled across a couple of these sites already, but sadly they don't offer the specific information I'm looking for.
I know there's a searchable database on UK Top 40, for instance, and All Media Guide offers info on the US Billboard Hot 100, but there's nothing similar for Australian charts (or Dutch charts, for that matter - but I have a book!  :D :P).

That's helpful (though it only offers a limited selection of years). :) It's still not what I'm looking for, though (but what I'm looking for likely doesn't exist).
If I wanted to find out what the peak position in Australian charts was for, say, "Celebrate Youth", and/or if Rick Springfield has had any other hits in Australia... I'd have a hard time finding that info. And it's just this kind of info that I'm wild about.

Amanda...you're genius! :)

But boy, those books don't come cheap. :o To get all three would cost me 83+95+95+26+26+26 = $ 351 (Australian dollars, that is) That's an awful lot of money...

I did some calculating... Aus $ 351 = EUR 215.76 (current rate)
For comparison: the "Top 40 Hitdossier 1965-2005" on Dutch Top 40 is available in stores and online for only EUR 16.90 (or Aus $ 27.50).

See where I'm coming from?

Definitely pricey  :o

I suppose though there's plenty of time between now and Christmas to start dropping hints  ;)

That's another "no", I'm afraid...

Is the Peter Andre song "Flava?"

...but this is a "yes". :) Flava hit #7 spot in 1996.

How many chances am I allowed at guessing the Bonus Question?

Well, there's only seven possible songs left, and I don't expect them to be answered anytime soon...Apparently, nobody is familiar with those tunes. I suppose you could go on guessing, and eventually you would get it right, but you would be guessing on tunes that aren't even answered. That's not what I had in mind when I posted the question. So...no more guesses on the bonus question.

I was hoping Luke (Fuss) would have another go, but he hasn't shown up. I'll wait for another day or two, and then I'll wrap this one up.

#33 | Hey, St. Peter?

I can answer that one WD !

No !  I only remember them having two hits :

"Hey St Peter" and "Down Among The Dead Men"

(The latter being the original Titanic song, but probably not suited to Celine Dion's warble-y style)...  :P

And, # 33 is neither of those....  :o :o :o

11. Australian boy band (1987 - 1995), biggest hit in Australia: "Say Goodbye". The song in this quiz hit #27 in Australia.
Kiss Me - Indecent Obsession (#21, 1992 - their only Dutch Top 40 hit)

17. Australian dance collective, led by Noel Burges and Simon Lewicki. Part of their name is a popular bean dish. Can't find any chart info.
Is It Love - Chili Hifly (1999, spending two weeks at #40 slot)

22. A song by The Black Sorrows (about how unpredictable affection can be) that I don't think made the charts in Australia.
Ain't Love The Strangest Thing (1993, got stuck in bubbling under section)

24. OK, they're NOT Australian nor from New Zealand... Twin brothers (last name Seymour), both first names rhyme with dark. Probably not a hit anywhere else.
Worn Down Piano - Mark & Clark Band (#8, 1977. The song lasts over 8 minutes)

33. Flash And The Pan, with a song about a nocturnal male.
Midnight Man (#23, 1985. One of only three Top 40 hits from this duo)

41. Helen Reddy, singing a song by Carole King & Toni Stern that might as well have been titled A Happy Tune. Don't know if this song charted anywhere else but The Netherlands.
No Sad Song (#27, 1972. She only had two Top 40 hits, the other one being the inevitable I Don't Know How To Love Him)
