Subject: Summer's A-Comin' (1 left - CLUED)

Written By: Paul on 05/29/07 at 3:26 pm

...but if you were anywhere in Britain over the weekend, you'd have thought otherwise!  ;)

Niggles aside, young Karen and myself have embarked into unknown territory by presenting to you an audio quiz (at long last!)

(Although it's not as high-tech as what our other 'quiz-meisters' concoct, it should work!) (Hopefully!)

Clicking on any of the links below will take you to a mp3 snippet of a song with 'Summer' (or a variant) in the title...all you have to do is just give us the title/artist...how simple is that?

Limit off!

(And before anyone says anything, I'm fully aware that our pals in the Southern hemisphere are, in fact, out of summer...but that doesn't mean you can't have a go!)

(And before anyone says anything else, I'm also fully aware that the file site is rather slow! Hey! It's a learning curve, ferchrissakes!)

Summer 1
RobertK - 'Theme From 'A Summer Place'' - Percy Faith & His Orchestra

Summer 2
RobertK - 'Suddenly Last Summer' - Motels

Summer 3
RobertK - 'Endless Summer Nights' - Richard Marx

Summer 4
A jack-of-all-trades, this fellow, as he writes, arranges, produces and, on this occasion, sang...

This was his only British hit under his own name, though he has written and produced many other hits...

He kicked-started his career in a 'furry' costume (!)

And the title of this song is almost the same as #s 11. and 20.

Summer 5
Henk - 'Cruel Summer' - Bananarama

Summer 6
Gaylon - 'Hot Fun In The Summertime' - Sly & The Family Stone

Summer 7
Ash  - 'Summertime Blues' - Eddie Cochran

Summer 8
mooster - 'Summer Love' - Sherbet

Summer 9
whistledog - 'Rain In The Summertime' - Alarm

Summer 10
Ash/Gaylon - 'Summer Breeze' - Seals & Crofts

Summer 11
Windbreaker05 - 'Summer In the City' - Lovin' Spoonful

Summer 12
whistledog - 'Summer Holiday' - Cliff Richard & The Shadows

Summer 13
Windbreaker05 - 'Summerlove Sensation' - Bay City Rollers

Summer 14
Gaylon - 'Summer Side Of Life' - Gordon Lightfoot

Summer 15
whistledog - 'Long Hot Summer' - Style Council

Summer 16
Green Lantern - 'Summer (The First Time)' - Bobby Goldsboro

Summer 17
Ash - 'In The Summertime' - Mungo Jerry

Summer 18
ladybug316 - 'Summer Of '69' - Bryan Adams

Summer 19
karen/Windbreaker05 - 'Here Comes Summer' - Jerry Keller

Summer 20
Windbreaker05 - 'Summer Night City' - ABBA

Summer 21
Henk - 'The Boys Of Summer' - Don Henley

Summer 22
Green Lantern - 'Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days Of Summer' - Nat 'King' Cole

I'm able to hear the clips, Paul...which means you did a very good job at putting this together!  ;)

Hullo, Paul and Karen!

Thanks for the compliments, Jason...though I think I've got some way to go in producing 'blockbusters' like you, Robert and Henk do!  ;)

09 | Rain in the Summertime - The Alarm
12 | Summer Holiday - Cliff Richard
15 | Long Hot Summer - The Style Council

No probs with those...

I s'pose I could've docked you points for missing out Cliff's backing group 'The Shadows' on #12., but I tend not to split hairs...

(...that's because I actually try to keep a hold of the little that I've got left!  :D)

Excellent first effort, Paul & Karen. :) Unfortunately, there's not a lot I recognize... :(

#23: Summernights - John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John

Ouch! I hope I haven't gone to 'obscure city' with these!

#5: Cruel Summer - Bananarama
#21: Boys Of Summer - Don Henley
#23: Summernights - John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John

Well, you recognised those okay...3 for 3!  :)

I always forget about The Shadows. lol  In Canada, the song appeared in the chart only as Cliff Richard, so I often forget which ones he did with The Shadows :D

In Canada, Long Hot summer charted as 'Long Hot Summer (It Don't Matter What I Do)' which is weird cause I see no reference to that sub-title on any of The Style Council albums.  Must've been only on the single release i s'pose

That's very odd, as 'The Shads' were well-established as Cliff's backing band by that time (and were also a successful group in their own right!)

Another oddity, as over here, it was the most-played track of a four-track Extended play single (possibly the last one to chart here)...and the EP went under the title of 'Style Council a Paris'...

They'd have been better off calling it 'It Don't Matter What I Do', as 'Long Hot Summer' is mentioned just once!

What a great idea for a quiz!  Summer is my favorite time of the year and has some of the very best music associated with it.

#7 - Summertime Blues - Eddie Cochran
#10 - Summer Breeze - Bread
#17 - Summertime - Mungo Jerry (one of my all time favorites.)  :)

Hi Paul & Karen ! :)

I managed to get one before my computer went on a go slow...  ::)

#8  Summer Love - Sherbet  :D

(didn't know that was a hit outside Aus.  :o )

Subject: Re: Summer's A-Comin'

#16 is 'Summer (the first time)' by Bobby Goldsboro, (the best thing he ever did IMHO)

#22 'Those lazy hazy crazy days of  summer' by Nat king Cole

Which, I think, leaves only #4 (for somebody else ....).

Gracious! You lot have been busy!  :o

It was young Karen's idea, Ash, so I think she should take a fair portion of credit!  :)

Anyway 2.5 out of three...the artist for #10. is not quite right, but it's along those lines (soft-rock and all that!)

6. Hot Fun in the Summertime - Sly and the Family Stone
10. Summer Breeze - Seals and Croft
14. Summer Side of Life - Gordon Lightfoot

That's who #10 was!

2.5 out of three for you, Gaylon, as Ash did get the title right!

#18 is "Summer of '69" by Bryan Adams

Sure is, ladybug...and they were the best days of his life, allegedly!

#19 Here Comes Summer -  :-\\

Right on the title, karen...and I don't blame you for 'balking' at the artist!

He's not one of the better known acts here, but he did have a British #1 with this in 1959...

Hi Paul & Karen ! :)

I managed to get one before my computer went on a go slow...  ::)

Tsk! Know the feeling, Amanda! But glad you made it!  :)

#8  Summer Love - Sherbet  :D

(didn't know that was a hit outside Aus.  :o )

Had a feeling you'd know that!  ;)

And no, as far as I'm aware, its success was confined to your part of the world... :o

Shame, really...they made some quite fine records...

#16 is 'Summer (the first time)' by Bobby Goldsboro, (the best thing he ever did IMHO)

I think we're all agreed that anything is better than the dreaded 'Honey'... :P

#22 'Those lazy hazy crazy days of  summer' by Nat king Cole

Which, I think, leaves only #4 (for somebody else ....).

Right on both, Green Lantern and you're right in thinking that only #4. is left standing (as well as the artist for #19.)

I'll rip off the limit (the quickest I think I've ever done that in a quiz!) and throw it open...

Well done to all of you... :)

19. Jerry Keller

Right again, Andrew...well done for spotting that!

This was about his only hit of any note, although he did co-write several for other artists...

And with fantastic timing, 'Here Comes Summer' hit #1 in Britain...in October 1959!
