Subject: More Minor 80s Hits <LAST ANSWERS GIVEN>

Written By: whistledog on 09/02/07 at 2:50 pm

In this edition, you get two quizzes in one (and as always, remember to specify which quiz you are answering from) ...

THE CHARTED - What were Top 40 hits in several countries including the US and/or the UK, sadly fell outside of the Canadian Top 40

THE UNCHARTED - Many people assume that Canada and the United States get the same songs, so to disprove that, here are songs that were in the US Top 40, yet did not chart at all in Canada (some which really have me baffled as I remember them being popular)

This one is more U.S. based than the last one, but I did manage to include a good chunk of UK and International ones (more than I thought i was going to be able to lol)

You got 5 for 5 :)

Was 'Endicott' a big hit in NL?  I know it wasn't big in the UK, but I took a chance on it maybe being popular somewhere because I knew Kid Creole was very successful all throughout Europe

It made #21 in our charts, so it was a modest hit. "I'm A Wonderful Thing Baby", "Stool Pigeon", "Annie I'm Not Your Daddy" and even "Hey Mambo" were bigger hits, though.

'Hey Mambo', the duet he did with Barry Manilow?  I didn't know that was a big hit anywhere ;D

DYK that this was one of only two Top 40 hits for Barry Manilow over here? :o

Now that is very shocking :o  A guess would say the other was 'Mandy'?

Nope. It would (obviously) have to be "Copacabana (At the Copa)", which hit #6 in 1978.

...that got stuck in bubbling under section in The Netherlands. Which is still better than the original, 'cause that didn't chart at all.

#3. 'So In Love' - OMD
#7. 'Don't Leave Me This Way' - Communards (which was actually one of the biggest Britsih sellers of 1986!)

I believe 'Oh Julie' was also one of the rare songs Shaky actually wrote.  He had no hits in America, then Mysteriously Barry takes it into the US Top 40.

You got 5 for 5 Paul :)

Not the biggest of his hits...it was a somewhat 'desperate' measure by the record company to come up with something different!

A medley was a good idea rather than another remix (Guitar Man had been a Top 40 hit in 1981)

The barrel's bottom was well and truly scraped in 1982 with 'Are You Lonesome Tonight'...

This was a previously unreleased 'live' performance where Elvis fluffs his lines and 'corpses' helplessly throughout the entire performance!  :P

And yes, it did chart!  :-[

I made an error.  I thought it was on 'Asylum', but it was apparently on 'Creatures of the Night'.  I got confused cause of its chart date in Canada.  The song apparently got to US #102 and also reached #76 in Australia

Here's a clue.  Their 2nd lead singer (Who sings this song) is already in this quiz .. one which you answered ;)

I made an error.  I thought it was on 'Asylum', but it was apparently on 'Creatures of the Night'.  I got confused cause of its chart date in Canada.  The song apparently got to US #102 and also reached #76 in Australia

:-\\...Now this is getting REALLY confusing... :-\\ ??? :-\\ :D

Here's a clue.  Their 2nd lead singer (Who sings this song) is already in this quiz .. one which you answered ;)

Why didn't you say so in the first place? So it's the Little River Band...and if it's John Farnham singing...it must be "You're Driving Me Out Of My Mind"

I never even saw this quiz until now, and I certainly wasn't aware that you were in the midst of posting the last answers while I was typing this...
