Subject: A Unique Quiz Game
Written By: nondiva234 on 01/03/08 at 2:00 am
I wish to start a quiz game. However, this quiz game will be slightly different from other quizzes here. I'll need players; I'll need a lot of players.

It's a trivia knowledge game. I can infuse some of what the board talks a lot about, if you'd like. We can go retro and stuff if you'd like.

It's as fair as I will make it to be. The game is called Duel, which was a game that was shown on ABC. The actual game required 22 players, but I can settle for any number. Preferably at least 8.

Alright, I have the following people in:
1. snozberries (The TV Junkie)
2. ninny
I need at least 6 more people. Preferably, I'd like 20 more people to play. But if that's not an option, I'll gladly take 8. Anyways, for those of you who have signed up to play, please give me a nickname/alias of sorts, such as "The Rad One." Note that you don't necessarily have to give me your occupation, such as "The Poker Player" or "The Stay-At-Home Mom."

I think I've been around you long enough Phil to say you would probably excel at this game. It really is about all forms of trivia. ABC.com might have it available to watch on their website.
Essentially two contestants go head to head
Each are given 10 chips
They are asked a question with 4 possible answers.
The contests then can place one chip on the proper answer...if they think they know it or
if they don't know they can cover all answers they think are possible.
if the contestant covers just one answer and is right they keep all the chips but
if the contest is unsure and covers all four answers then they lose the chips that are on the wrong answers but retain the chip over the right answer....
the duel ends when the first contestant is out of chips.....
in the event that both players lose all ten chips at the same time then you go to a tie breaker...
this is similar to the regular round except you only get 4 chips.
a question is asked and 4 possible answers are revealed. The player who answers the question using the fewest number of chips wins the round.....
The winner then plays a second round (same rules) against a new contestant.
Hope that was clear its not as complicated as it may seem....
The questions do very from pop culture (music, film, & television and also celebrity trivia) to geography, history and politics.... so its a broad range not sure how you'd regulate the chips thing but I am intrigued

A concern I have is how US based the questions will be
looks like Nondiva is from Canada so maybe she will be able to make it less US specific... Canadians are not as self centered as US citizens are... I say that with love lest I offend anyone.
Subject: Re: A Unique Quiz Game

No, I won't Americanize the game up too much. I'll make it country-neutral. So expect questions from all aspects, not just from one country, though US may be somewhat dominated in the trivia, as most issues and events have something to do with the US.

Subject: Re: A Unique Quiz Game
Written By: nondiva234 on 01/08/08 at 12:50 am
In some cases, it may. But for the most part, no. :) So, you interested?
BTW, to add to the rules, a person who gets a question wrong is eliminated, regardless of how many chips he/she may have. So it has a bit of a Greed/Weakest Link twang to the mix.

ninny! Now ninny, you can choose who you wish to challenge. Who will it be? snozberries, Philip Eno, karen, or Gibbo? Make your decision, and post it here.

Hmm. I've had the quickest of scans through this thread. Not very good at grasping new rules/ don't like digesting complexities .... and that applies to movie 'thrillers' too, where you have to try to work out what's going on. I quickly 'tune-out' / lose concentration. Still, with some trepidation / doubts, I'll put my name down (screen-name) ... but am expecting an early exit ...
Not sure if I'm gonna hold anyone up, so carry on without me, if I don't 'check in' soon enough ...

You both ready? Let's Duel.
This is how it works. Each of you have 10 playing chips. I will read a question, with four possible choices. You will then tell me which of the four answers you'd like to cover up. You may cover one, two, three or four of the answers. Remember, the object of the game is to have as much chips left. Because if you lose all your chips, the game is over. In addition, covering up all four answers is a good strategy, because if you answer even a single question wrong, the game ends. As well, we have a jackpot that will start at $100,000, and will increase based on how many chips have been discarded, which I will explain later on. You ready? Let's Duel!
Screen up.
In 1893, which country was the first in the world to give women the right to vote?
A: Canada
B: United Kingdom

You have 72 hours to PM me your answers. If you don't, using a random generator, I will select an answer for you, and I will only select up to only two answers to cover for you. Good luck.

I take it this is a game where honor is assumed ... no one's googling/ consulting reference materials, or family/friends .
Reckon I know this answer. I'd want to play all my chips on it ... but still not sure how this all works. Glad I'm not currently involved, so I can watch and learn (?) how it's played.

Uhm, :-[ I'm still trying to get the hang of how this game is played. As long as I'm just hit with q/a, I can handle that. The strategies etc; :-\\
It would appear to me that ninny is currently ahead by one chip ? Looks like she was confident re either UK or NZ, Philip, less so. I knew it. Could I have placed all my chips on it, then had a big lead ? ???
As for your next q. 'we're ALL in' ? ??? Am I expected to make a bet here ?
I reckon I might eliminate two possibs here ... thinking I know what they stand for .... but the other two .... maybe one I could stab at (what it might stand for) .... :-\\

Reckon I'd've covered two there ^. My reasoning: I believe MAD stands for 'Mutually assured destruction' .... so although relevant, I could rule it out. Similarly, ICBM .... that's 'Intercontinental ballistic missile' .... but not a system, to my knowledge. The other two ..... well, I'm guessing NWA might be 'Northwest Alliance' .... but whether that's right, or was a system. If I could've only guessed one, I'd've gone for DEW .... as I can't even guess what that is. I would've covered NWA and DEW.

Your days look very numbered. If you place 4, you've only 1 left .... and are then almost certainly dead. If you place one .... you've a 75% chance of being wrong. 75 % in university gradings was 'excellent'. Not 'excellent' in your case ! :\'(

A quick 'squiz' on the internet indicates it is merely a fancy term for order ... as in (this case) ... is the letter 'G' ... the 15th, 17th, 19th, or 21st letter in this program's board (or whatever it is displayed on).

There is no letter 'G' on Deal Or No Deal. There again in the UK version of DOND it only has boxes numbered 1 to 20.

It's the number of cases -where G is (hint the # of cases is also a # in a Chicago song then you subtract where G is in the alphabet) :)

That looks like a pretty good hint. Let's see if I can work this one out.
Most likely 25 or 6 to 4 is the song. Well, nothing else numerically comes to mind.
Of those numbers, only 25 could be subtracted from to leave a result. Hence the answer must be .... must be ..... :-X
I think you're on your own from here Philip. :\'(
What .... you still want my help ? ???
Ok ..... 25 -7 = 32. That's it. It must be the 32nd letter of the alphabet !
See, I told you I was a genie-ass ! :P ;D

If it's NOT 25 or 6 to 4 .... then I'm starting to think the song wasn't a hit in the UK.
Since G is the 7th .... the number involved must be higher than that. However ... having a song title with twenty one, twenty two etc; sounds too cumbersome (other than 25 or 6 to 4). So ... remaining possibilities are eight to twenty (in the title).
No Chicago song I'm aware of ... covers those ....
Keep going thru them , Phil.

Well, you've got your responses in, Janine. No worries. Now for Philip to answer.
BTW, there was another addition to this game called the "Press." Whoever answered first could press a button to force the player to answer within 7 seconds, forcing him or her to quickly decide what answers should be covered. I would do that on this game, but with PMs being used instead of playing with you guys in real life, I'm going to abort that ability. On the other hand, I just got an idea on how to use this press...but I won't implement it.

I see his answers are 3, 4, 5 and 6.
What do I consider to be the 4 (oops !) major planets ? Well, maybe I'm wrong ..... but I'd've said we're talking the four giants .... Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. That leaves you a fifty fifty, if you don't know the other part of the question ( which I don't ).

My dictionary (Collins) defines a Major Planet as:
a planet of the Solar System, as opposed to an asteroid (minor planet).

Our solar system has eight major planets—Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—and a number of small, dwarf planets, including Pluto, Eris, and Ceres.Astronomers have changed the count of official planets in our solar system several times. Copernicus counted six planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Using telescopes, astronomers discovered Uranus in 1781 and Neptune in 1846. Pluto was thought to be a planet when it was discovered in 1930
