Subject: Henk's Surprise Lyrics Quiz! [1980 hits from Dutch Top 40 - Finished off]

Written By: Henk on 03/01/08 at 2:26 pm

You thought I didn't make them anymore...? Think again! :P

Fifty lines from fifty songs...can you name the tunes? And can you find the (hidden) connection?
I'll give you one (little) hint: in quite a few cases, it's not the original artist I'm after...

Limit = OFF. A point for each correct answer,
and three bonus points for the connection.

Gibbo takes the bonus points!

As usual: please no cheating...

Now go ahead and enjoy! :)

Okay...so maybe you need some hints:

21. A cover version of a Don Williams song, by a US actor of Greek descent, who had something of a singing career (tho' not in US).
Other songs: "If" and "Lovin' Understandin' Man". The actor died on January 22, 1994 - just one day after his 72nd birthday.

28. Two members of 10CC, who had an international hit with "Cry".  The song title is identical to a Sting song (about a "legal alien").

47. Singer/actress, best remembered for her cooperation with Meat Loaf. She also had something of a solo career,
which included a #1 in Dutch Top 40 ("We Belong To The Night").
This song (a cover version of a Timi Yuro song, that originally hit #12 in 1962 in US) only got to #92 in US, though...

Three for three, Gis! :)

...and what's wrong with liking Johnny Logan? A man who's won the ESC three times (two times as a singer, once as a composer) can't be wrong. ;)

...actually, it's probably as warm as you'll ever get.  ;) All songs in this quiz were hits in Dutch Top 40 in 1980. That doesn't necessarily mean they're all 1980 songs...and this also explains why I need cover versions for some instead of the original artist.

Hello Henk...yes it is a surprise seeing a lyric effort from you again, but no less entertaining!  :)

#34. 'Baggy Trousers' - Madness
#42. 'Together We Are Beautiful' - Fern Kinney
#43. 'On My Radio' - Selecter
#48. 'Living In The Plastic Age' - Buggles

I'll hazard a guess that these were all Dutch hits in 1980...they couldn't have been British, because #43. was a hit in late-79 here...

Well Kevin, I can give you 2.5... (and some karma for #12 - a song that, to my knowledge, did absolutely nothing in UK and US). I'm looking for a different artist for #15 though. Might be a tough one, 'cause it didn't chart in UK and/or US.

I thought you'd be looking for a someone other than the Dead but I took a shot anyway. As far as The Foreigner
song goes, When I was dating my wife I heard 3 albums at her house; Foreigner - Head Games, Supertramp -
Breakfast In America and Pink Floyd - Side 1 of The Wall. Every night...the same albums  :P

It's all good Henk, it's all good.  ;D

Seriously, she would play the album once and then one song off the album over and over. The song:
Lord Is It Mine, to this day I cringe when I hear it.  ;D

I'm not familiar with that song. Maybe I should keep it that way. ;)

It's not really a bad song, if you like ballads. It's just that over and over and over gets annoying.

It IS Joe Jackson. :) Well done...I was afraid the clipping might be too short.

I was indeed surprised to see it hadn't been answered yet. After all, it was a US #1... so I don't think you're the only one hitting himself. ;)

Now you got me curious...What did you think they were singing...?

47. Linda Ronstadt?

No, sorry...that's not correct. It does sound a lot like her, don't it?

This singer (also an actress, in "Tootsie" and "Fatal Attraction" among others) is best remembered for her cooperation with Meat Loaf. ;)
The song is a cover version of a Timi Yuro song.

It didn't, though not for want of trying...it was ideal for the more middle-of-the-road radio stations, who played the thing to death!

Sadly, the public thought otherwise...but it's a nice piece of fluff...

Hi Graham!  :) Glad you made it in time... 8)

Well, it was an exceptionally short line from the lyrics...And it wasn't her biggest hit either, so don't kick yourself too hard. ;)

What can they be? Illusions? Oh no...No doubt about it... :D

Whacky stuff from Errol Brown and company...totally out of line with the rest of their work - and yet it hit #2 in UK.

Time to wrap this one up... Here are the final answers:

21. A cover version of a Don Williams song, by a US actor of Greek descent, who had something of a singing career (tho' not in US).
Other songs: "If" and "Lovin' Understandin' Man". The actor died on January 22, 1994 - just one day after his 72nd birthday.

          Watch here and find out...

28. Two members of 10CC, who had an international hit with "Cry".  The song title is identical to a Sting song (about a "legal alien").

          Watch here and find out...

          Watch here and find out...

It was a great quiz Henk.  I really enjoy them alot.

I *did* hear of Godley and Cream (or at least of the song "Cry"  I remember the video had computer morphs of a bunch of people crying.)

I've also heard Sting/The Police's version of Englishman in New York and I really like that song.  I'm surprised I didn't recognize it in this quiz.  :(  :-[

lol  Hopefully we won't be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for threadjacking...but anyways...

That is supposed to be me (yeah on a good day), It's a mini-program called "Meez" http://photobucket.com/meez  there is one on the front page that I think would be perfect for Erin/Quirk.  Anyways...my "meez" is me from the 80s in the arcade hugging/loving my cat.  Yeah, I know there is a fine line between loving your cat and loving your cat, trust me, I have not crossed the line.   ;D

What you can't seen in the picture is that I am wearing a denim skirt and purple leg warmers too.  I couldn't figure out how to make the picture smaller and still animated.  I'm not that good at photo editing.   :-http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff30/bookmistress4ever/mz_040408_10027304339.gif?t=1205723905

That's prolly 'cause the Sting song and the Godley & Creme song are entirely different...They don't even share the same lyics (and that includes the title, because the title does not appear in the actual Godley & Creme song).

Anyway...Thanks Patty and Q.  :)
