Subject: Falsetto lyrics quiz - all done

Written By: maddog on 02/13/09 at 1:36 pm

It's been a very long time since I last posted a quiz but inspiration has struck me for a new theme!

Can you recognise these songs and the artist from these lyrics?

Too dam' long! And a good one it is too, Graham...

#1. 'Walk Like A Man' - Four Seasons
#2. 'Sideshow' - Barry Biggs
#6. 'Tip Toe Through The Tulips' - Tiny Tim
#11. 'I Remember You' - Frank Ifield

(Drat! One of my favourites at #16! Oh well, perhaps another time!)

The last two point me in the direction that all these songs are, or have been, 'covered'...but it's a wild stab!

It's a favourite of mine too, I will be lifting the limit shortly.

That's not the theme Paul. Big hint: try singing those four songs you guessed correctly in your head, does anything strike you?

Great quiz!  I'm afraid the only one I can recognize off the bat is:

20. Kiss by Prince (or Tom Jones and Art of Noise (I think)

The original version by Prince is correct in the context of this quiz, the cover by The Art of Noise with Tom Jones is most definitely not!
Actually, it's quite amusing to imagine Tom Jones doing it....

If it struck me in a 'certain' place, then perhaps yes!  ;)

They're all sung in falsetto!

They're all sung in falsetto!

Bingo! Well done Paul.

Not all of the songs are sung falsetto all the way through but I believe they all contain falsetto sections.

This quiz was inspired by a BBC radio program I listened to a few weeks ago about the history of falsetto singing in popular music.
It was presented by Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, who should know a bit about it I guess. It was a really interesting program, very well researched and I thought Robin Gibb's insights were excellent.

The "Walk Like A Man" section was interesting as Robin pointed out the juxtaposition of Italian-American machismo in the song itself and the falsetto style, often associated with effeminacy.
There was also a discussion about whether yodelling was actually the same thing as falsetto. Robin's conclusion was that it was and that's good enough for me...hence Frank Ifield made it into the quiz at #11.

4. Hah 2112, Rush.
12. I think it's I Believe In A Thing Called Love by The Darkness
16. Shoot, it's called 'This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both of Us' I think, but I can't remember the artist. Half credit? :D
28. THE FLOATERS!! Wasn't the song called Float On?

#4....Temples Of Syrinx.....Rush?

Yes!! That's correct loki. I was a big fan of Rush back in the 1970s, I can well remember playing air guitar to "Temples of Syrinx" at the local rock club / underage drinking hole. Happy days  :).

Very good Silver Power, all correct.
Unfortunately loki13 just beat you to #4. The Rush song is one of those album tracks that blend into each other, "2112 Overture / Temples of Syrinx". You just don't get that anymore  >:(.

I will certainly give you half a credit for #16, I know Paul will be able to dive in with the artist when I lift the limit! It's a great song, amazingly weird lyrics when you decipher them.

#12 is another favourite of mine. Whatever you think of The Darkness I think "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" will stand the test of time as a great rock song.

And the Floaters at #23 - a one-hit wonder from 1977 that lives on indefinitely in our collective memory and in quizzes like this. Brilliantly camp.
"Cancer....and my name is Larry!" Still makes me laugh today LOL.

I was a huge fan in the 70's as well, strangely enough, I stopped being a fan in 1980. For me, the 80's killed Rush.

Edit to add a little tidbit, maybe coincidence.  ???

Neil peart was born on Sept. 12 or 9/12....9:12 standard time on a clock but in Military time it is 21:12....am I reading too much into this? ;D

Both correct Jason, well done  :).

I'm not a big fan of "More Than Words" myself but it was the only song that I could think of with a falsetto part to make the quiz up to 30 questions!

Justin Hawkins is/was the lead singer of The Darkness, I think they've permanently split up now after Justin's substance addiction/reha problems.

You're right karen!

The performance of this song on "Top of the Pops" in 1974(?) sticks in my memory, the charismatic stare of Ron Mael at the keyboards with his "Adolf" moustache....was very striking at the time.
Sparks were the talk of the playground at school the next day, I recall.

Scared the life out of me, he did!

Legend has it they were scheduled to appear on TOTP just as this single was breaking, but couldn't get work permits...so their vacant space was taken by The Rubettes with 'Sugar Baby Love'!

Enough waffling, let's see if there's anything else...

#21. 'Indian Love Call' with yodelling above and beyond the call of duty by Slim Whitman...

#28. 'Police And Thieves' - Junior Murvin (covered by The Clash, I think, but I can't remember if theirs was done in the high-pitched style of Junior...)

Correct on both counts Paul.

Indeed, on their first eponymous album in 1977. This is my favourite track on one of my favourite albums of all time, although Joe Strummer certainly didn't emulate the singing style of Junior Murvin.
A bit like Tom Jones, I just can't imagine Joe Strummer doing falsetto!

It's not that band gibbo, to be honest I'm not familiar with Evermore. The band in question features a successful DJ from New Zealand who has a regular evening shown on BBC Radio One here in the UK.

"The Other Side" is a great song you should check it out on youtube or wherever...
