Subject: Z Is For Zugabe (Part 4: Going InstruMental! Again... Answers Revealed)

Written By: Henk on 04/30/09 at 1:36 am

http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/2/17/785141/InstruMentalLogo.gif

Back once again with a blast from the past... 8)

Yes, it's InstruMentals again (tho' some tunes have some lyrics).

Name the tune, name the artist (full names/titles required) and get a point!
Note: Some artists are represented twice in this quiz. ;)
And I've made extra sure to get the right versions of the tunes, so no haggling! :P

Limit = 10. I know you'll enjoy!
:)

Scores so far:
10.0  Paul
  8.5  maddog
  8.0  Philip Eno
  4.0  Username Deleted
  3.5  karen
  3.0  CeramicsFanatic / whistledog
  2.0  ladybug316 / loki 13
  1.0  mooster

Hints!
03. The tune was used for trailers for the 2007 film "(The) 300", but was never released as a single.
10. One of the artists that's represented twice in this quiz. Hailing from the Motor City, the band bring an ode to a sign of
the zodiac (a US #18 hit).
15. An ode to a European city (where Dizzy would feel very at home), by an artist whose name remains a puzzling question... (a UK #15).
24. A lethal combination of explosives (title) and a carryable rocket launcher (artist = Bazuka) that made #28 in UK and #10 in US.
31. Not released as a single. Chemical warfare from Music For The Masses.
41. Title track from an album by this questionable band.
42. One of the best instrumental tracks ever, according to many. A Canadian (Toronto based) band, with a tune that
consists of three letters towards the end of the alphabet.
43. See #10. This tune made #6 in US.
44. A tiny little village in Luxembourg and the band from #31. B-side of one of their singles.
45. A tune as sweet as the brightly colored real thing (Cotton Candy) by a man who also had a hit with a tune
about an Indonesian island. The tune made #15 in US.
47. It's what we're made of.
49. A UK #34 and a US #4 by a Brooklyn based band, best known for "Do It ('Til You're Satisfied)". This tune's about a high speed train.
51. You got #35, but you didn't get this one? Odd... This was a US #4 hit for the same artist.
54. Well, I didn't really expect you to get this one. The artist is Dutch, and has toured UK, US, Canda, Australia and Japan (as well as Europe).
He's Holland's #1 export product at the moment. The tune is also Dutch.
55. I asked my brother "What's your most favorite instrumental?", and he said "This one". An everlasting evening from a Czech guy.
I can totally see Don and Philip Michael cruising to this one...
56. Instrumental track (consisting of a year and a letter) by a British band, best known around here for their Falco cover.
This happens to be one of MY favorites.

#6 is Classical Gas by Mason Williams
#13 is Eruption by Van Halen
#16 is Call of Ktulu by Metallica
#27 is Wipeout by ??? (without cheating)

Since I didn't reach 4 complete answers, #38 is by Herbie Hancock. I'll leave the title of the song to someone else.

Great quiz as always, Henk. Karma.

#7 The Police?

#38 Local Hero/Going Home? (OS by Dire Straits)

Only a few left that I recognize...

29. Magic - Pilot
33. artists are Barry Devorzon & Perry Botkin, Jr.
35. Cut The Cake - AWB
47 sounds like it might be A Flock of Seagulls, but I'm not sure of the song... ???

A few of what's left are very familiar, but by name, I can give you three ...

17 | The Homecoming - Hagood Hardy
32 | Last Date - Floyd Cramer
46 | Garden Party - Mezzoforte

'The Homecoming' is one of the most beautiful instrumentals ever written.  I was pleasantly surprised to see it in your quiz :)  Was it a hit in NL?

It was originally written and used as a commercial jingle for the Salada Tea Company in 1972.  Popular demand made it a single in 1975, and to this day, it is still one of the most recognized songs in Canadian music.  It's been a staple among graduations and homecomings for many years

#38 Local Hero/Going Home? (OS by Dire Straits)

Hi Jason!

Got any plans of launching a new quiz any time soon..? ??? ATM, I'm the only one doing audio quizzes and it gets kinda lonely.

I can give you two points for #17 and #32.
Your answer for #46 is incorrect. No Mezzoforte in this quiz.

Now to answer your question: "The Homecoming" never was a hit over here. In fact, I don't even think it was released as a single over here.
I found it when scouring the internet for instrumentals to use in my quiz. I'd never heard it/heard of it before that.

Dang.  #46 does sound familiar.  I thought it was Mezzoforte, but was too lazy to dig out the LP lol  It might come to me (assuming it doesn't get solved)

I had an audio quiz in the works before my computer partially died.  I have recently begun work on it, and it's gonna be a good one.  Now it's a matter of seeing if my computer will let me upload lol

Once again you've surpassed yourself Henk, and once again I thank you for the effort you put into creating these quizzes which I enjoy so much  :).

#20 Misirlour - Dick Dale and his Del-Tones

Well known from the "Pulp Fiction" soundtrack and also the basis for "Pump It" by the Black Eyed Peas, which I also love and so does my 8 year old daughter!

#26 Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag - Pigbag

This one takes me back to student dancing in the early 1980s  ;D.

#36 Man of Mystery -  The Shadows

...to which I used to play along on my bass guitar while playing my Mum & Dad's vinyl copy of The Shadows "Twenty Golden Greats"

And my final guess, which I haven't heard for so many years but I am sure it's....

#52 Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict - Pink Floyd

from "Ummagumma". This one is really nostalgic for me, takes me right back to teenage parties at my mate Dan's house.

You got 4 for 4. 8)

Of course, "Several Species" does have some sort of lyrics (or, as Roger Waters put it, concrete poetry), when Waters bursts out into random poetry towards the end. Makes you wonder what he was using at the time...

Absolutely Henk, psychedelic times indeed. What we were using while listening to it, aged about 16 in the late 1970s, was Strongbow cider purchased from the local off license  ;D.

You could also argue that "One Of These Days" is not strictly instrumental also, as there's a sort of distorted voiceover near the end that says "One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces". Not sure whose voice it is though - Roger Waters again?

According to wiki, it's "a rare vocal contribution by Nick Mason (...) recorded through a ring modulator and slowed down to create an eerie effect".

Well, there's no way I can tell.

A couple of false starts I'm afraid...

#15. I should know this, but it's just not coming to me... :-did perform more than one instrumental! This dates from their Hamburg days)
#23. 'Machine Gun' - Commodores (excellent song, before Lionel made them all 'syrupy'  :P)

#24. sounds familiar, I'm not doing too well here!

#25. 'On The Rebound' - Floyd Cramer (phew!)

#21. Ditto this...

Funny thing is... I used this tune in my previous Instrumental quiz, and nobody came up with an answer (not even with the hints I provided).

#22. 'Cry For A Shadow' - Beatles (yes, they did perform more than one instrumental! This dates from their Hamburg days)
#23. 'Machine Gun' - Commodores (excellent song, before Lionel made them all 'syrupy'  :P)

Yes and yes.  :)

#24. sounds familiar, I'm not doing too well here!

OK, here's a little hint.
Not a big hit in UK, only making #28. This is one of the tunes that has (some) lyrics.

#25. 'On The Rebound' - Floyd Cramer (phew!)

Well, that one's also correct. So in all, you got three more.

I know the 'original' tune is Grieg's Piano Concerto (echoes of the famous Morecambe & Wise sketch!), but it must go under a different title...

Unless someone else beats you to it, of course.

Hi Henk

#28 is the fantastic Rumble by Link Wray, which I think is also on the soundtrack to "Pulp Fiction" and thereby identifies you as a possible Tarantino fan (with #20).

#40 is A Walk In The Black Forest - not sure of the artist but the biggest UK hit was by Horst Jankowski

#50 is Magic Fly - Space. I always hated this tune, although I can't explain why.

Many of these are very familiar.  I know I definately recognize #46.  I have it somewhere, but I can't for the life of me remember who it is or what it's called.  It's killing me

Correct. 8)
I didn't know it was on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack (or any other, for that matter). That's purely coincidental.

Did you know that the tune was banned by a lot of (US) radio stations back in the day? Not because of its content (obviously) but because of the title (!).
Maybe Link should've kept to the original title ("Oddball") after all...

And Horst Jankowski it is. :)

Yes you can, but it's incorrect I'm afraid.

#21 is based on Greig's A minor Piano Concerto

Indeed it is, and so is the title of this tune (that only made #35 in UK, but reached #8 on US). I can't give you any points for this information, though. :(

#30 is very familar, but the title escapes me

I know the feeling! ;D
I don't know about UK or US, but over here it was used for a game show (possibly The Price Is Right), where I must have heard it hundreds of times. I never realized it was actually an instrumental hit record by a jazz virtuoso.

it is that track that you can hear a sigh of relief from the musicains at the end as if they have finally made a complete and proper recording after performing many takes.

I think the artist for #37 is Mark Knopfler (as a solo artist rather than as part of Dire Straits).

I can never remember the name of this one - though I always recognise it.  Was it used as a tv theme or in an advert in the UK?  Years ago.  Whenever I hear it I get a picture in my head of a girl skipping with a rope.  :-\\

I found several of them maddeningly familiar.  The problem with instrumentals is you can't sing your way to the title!

I think it has been used in numerous adverts (First Direct bank seems to spring to mind, but I could be wrong)...

Brubeck had this thing for strange time signatures...his big hit 'Take Five' was in 5/4 time and this was done in 7/4 (hence 'unsquare')...

Oh, you're probably gonna kick yourself over a few, no doubt. I've also put in a few that I sorta knew weren't gonna be answered. And then there's a few left that were US hits only.

#45 balloons?

Brightly colored? Yes. Sweet? I don't think so.  Here's one more clue: it's usually sold on a stick and it's most commonly pink.

#47 carbon?  or oxygene part whatever?

Not likely anyone will come up with the remaining answers anymore.

03. The tune was used for trailers for the 2007 film "(The) 300", but was never released as a single.
Just Like You Imagined (- Nine Inch Nails)

10. One of the artists that's represented twice in this quiz. Hailing from the Motor City, the band bring an ode to a sign of
the zodiac (a US #18 hit).
Taurus - Dennis Coffey & The Detroit Guitar Band

31. Not released as a single. Chemical warfare from Music For The Masses.
        Agent Orange - Depeche Mode

41. Title track from an album by this questionable band.
        Quadrophenia (- The Who)

42. One of the best instrumental tracks ever, according to many. A Canadian (Toronto based) band, with a tune that
consists of three letters towards the end of the alphabet.
        YYZ - Rush

43. See #10. This tune made #6 in US.
Scorpio - Dennis Coffey & The Detroit Guitar Band

44. A tiny little village in Luxembourg and the band from #31. B-side of one of their singles.
Oberkorn (It's A Small Town) - Depeche Mode

45. A tune as sweet as the brightly colored real thing (Cotton Candy) by a man who also had a hit with a tune
about an Indonesian island. The tune made #15 in US.
(Cotton Candy - ) Al Hirt

49. A UK #34 and a US #4 by a Brooklyn based band, best known for "Do It ('Til You're Satisfied)". This tune's about a high speed train.
        Express - BT Express

51. You got #35, but you didn't get this one? Odd... This was a US #4 hit for the same artist.
      Space Race (- Billy Preston)

54. Well, I didn't really expect you to get this one. The artist is Dutch, and has toured UK, US, Canda, Australia and Japan (as well as Europe).
He's Holland's #1 export product at the moment. The tune is also Dutch.
Olé Guapa - André Rieu & Orchestra

55. I asked my brother "What's your most favorite instrumental?", and he said "This one". An everlasting evening from a Czech guy.
I can totally see Don and Philip Michael cruising to this one...
        Forever Tonight - Jan Hammer

56. Instrumental track (consisting of a year and a letter) by a British band, best known around here for their Falco cover.
This happens to be one of MY favorites.
        1980-F - After The Fire

Because it was nagging at me I googled about #51.  Apparently it was used as a theme tune.  American Bandstand host and executive producer Dick Clark enjoyed "Space Race" to the extent that he used the instrumental for the mid-show break for virtually the remainder of its run.

Kind of odd that I thought it was a tv theme and it turns out to be a theme to a show I've never seen!
