Subject: Finally...The Return Of The Audio Quiz! [1972 - Volume 1][Answers given]

Written By: Henk on 02/27/11 at 3:24 pm

So there it is...the long awaited return of the audio quiz! :D

And for this quiz (the first in what I hope to make a series) I'm taking you back...
Back to a time before blu-ray, DVD or even CD. Back to a time before MTV...
Back to a time when some of you weren't even around...
Back to a time when disco was still in its infancy...
Yes indeed...

You know the rules: no cheating, and a starting limit of 4.

NO MORE LIMIT!

Have fun!
:)

Hints!
05. A non-charting single from a lady better known for "Trapped By A Thing Called Love" or "My Toot Toot".
Song title means sth. like letting everyone know quickly, and also happens to be the title of a song from the 2007 movie "Hairspray".

10. This instrumental peaked at #18 in US. It's named after a sign of the zodiac.
Artist's first name is the same as Rodman's, last name is identical to Tabatha's.

13. A quintet from Ottawa, Canada, originally named The Staccatos. I'm afraid this song didn't even chart in Canada...
It's a girl's name, and she could be The Good Wife...

14. Song peaked at #50 in US. Song title is an expression, referring to someone that stands out and is recognized while still alive.

24. I've no hints for this one. The title is Rock Me On The Water.

27. The singer is represented twice in this quiz. Though this song only reached #91, 1972 was a very successful year for him.
Maybe you recall his "Get Down, Get Down (Get On The Floor)" being a hit in 1975.

30. This singer (who's already in this quiz) thinks he's train, and according to the song title he must be on the banks of a flood.

33. You know the singer. She likes to go downtown.

34. The only claim to fame for this Chicago band, named after an event that took place on March 22, 1622 (or 1621).
Title refers to a celestial body in the months of July/August.

36. The singer's first and only chart appearance in US, peaking at #17. The song title points to bad weather conditions.
The singer later sought solace and inspiration in religion (resulting in songs like "Go Like Elijah").

39. Jesus did it, and Saint Peter tried it...

40. A bit odd, this one, especially if you consider the singer's most successful songs ("Everybody's Talking" and "Without You").
But here he is, in a rocket to the moon...

41. Song title: you better not continue your actions.

42. The singer had a US Top10 hit the same year with "Clean Up Woman".
This song is about a job that lots of (pre)teen girls take on to earn some cash.

44. Title is a contradiction in terms. The song only made #86 in US.

45. A song that failed to make a serious dent in US charts (#78) by a singer that's already in this quiz.
Apparently he's stumbled across a (long lost) close relative.

48. The band was formerly known as the Peppermint Trolley Company. This was their only claim to fame under their new moniker.
Title is a girl's name. Her last name could be Flack, for all I know...

Number 33 sounds like a cover version of "My Guy", but I can't figure out the performer.

And those are correct as well. The singer for #37 hit the Billboard Top 100 21 times in the 1960's and 1970's, including six Top 10 hits, that's as much as I'm willing to tell you.

Alright everyone, listen up.

All songs in this quiz made the weekly Top 100 of the Record World Singles Chart in 1972. That's not to say they also made Top 100 in Billboard Charts, 'cause, well...some of them didn't. ;D

That said, there are still some major (international) hits of 1972 left (even by Billboard standards). Funny how some hit records apparently don't become classics.

Oh, and one more thing: there are several artists that appear twice in this quiz. ;)

#3. 'The Way Of Love' - Cher
#7. title is 'Could It Be Forever'
#11. is 'the killer' himself - Jerry Lee Lewis
#17. 'Walking In The Rain With The One I Love' - Love Unlimited (with Barry White answering the telephone!)

Four for four, Peter! 8)

Yes, many people seem to forget Rick had a career even before songs like "Jessie's Girl" and "Celebrate Youth".
"What Would The Children Think" made #70 in Billboard charts.

Hello Philip. :)

#29 Run To Me

That's correct.

#49 Candy Man

Sorry, incorrect. "Candy Man" is already in this quiz (see #16)

#50 You Can Do Magic, NOT by Limmie and the Family Cookin'

Actually, it IS Limmie & the Family Cookin' - at least the song was/is labelled that way.  :-\\

After re-hearing the track #49, I think there is a clue in the lyric, is it Sweet Gingerbread Man? But who is the singer?

That's what Karen suggested as well, but alas...that's not the title.

All I can tell you about the singer is that he's already in this quiz. ;)

It's a lot of work, but I'm always pleased with the result. Sadly, my quizzes always turn out harder than I expected.

Nothing? Here's a hint: the artist for #13 are a Canadian band (hailing from Ottawa), originally known as The Staccatos.

You ARE correct, Peter! 8) There are other females that have covered "In The Ghetto" (like Dolly Parton and Mica Paris, for instance).

As I am finding out with your other topic, I only know the Elvis Presley version, but here I did recognise the song, but I feared going over the limit of 4 back then.

05. A non-charting single from a lady better known for "Trapped By A Thing Called Love" or "My Toot Toot".
Song title means sth. like letting everyone know quickly, and also happens to be the title of a song from the 2007 movie "Hairspray".
Now Run And Tell That - Denise LaSalle

13. A quintet from Ottawa, Canada, originally named The Staccatos. I'm afraid this song didn't even chart in Canada...
It's a girl's name, and she could be The Good Wife...
Julianna - Five Man Electrical Band

14. Song peaked at #50 in US. Song title is an expression, referring to someone that stands out and is recognized while still alive.
Legend In Your Own Time - Carly Simon

30. This singer (who's already in this quiz) thinks he's train, and according to the song title he must be on the banks of a flood.
Down By The River - Albert Hammond

34. The only claim to fame for this Chicago band, named after an event that took place on March 22, 1622 (or 1621).
Title refers to a celestial body in the months of July/August.
          Summer Sun - Jamestown Massacre

41. Song title: you better not continue your actions.
Don't Do It - The Band

44. Title is a contradiction in terms. The song only made #86 in US.
          Together Alone - Melanie

45. A song that failed to make a serious dent in US charts (#78) by a singer that's already in this quiz.
Apparently he's stumbled across a (long lost) close relative.

I Found My Dad - Joe Simon

You know what's sad?  I actually have both of these on mp3, but I never listened to them.  I am slowly completing my 70s Canadian collection, mostly songs I know by title but not to hear them.  I totally missed the hints, as I would have definately gotten #13 from that clue :(

'Julianna' actually did chart in Canada.  It peaked at #17 in 1972

I once added the complete Staccatos/Five Man Electrical Band chart listing to wikipedia, but a while back, someone hacked it and I was too lazy to re-add it lol
