Subject: NEW LYRICS QUIZ! Greatest Gig In The Sky (Vol. 1) [Answers Revealed]

Written By: Henk on 12/11/11 at 10:40 am

Time for a new quiz. No audio quiz this time, because it’s getting hard to find a reliable host.
So instead you’re getting this lyrics quiz.
You know the drill: name the song and artist (NOTE: it’s not always the original artist I’m after).
A point for each correct answer.
But that’s not all: there’s also the question of the theme…
All songs and/or artists have something in common (fairly easy, I’d say).
That's right - (nearly) all artists are deceased. Sad but true.
Five points go to...
And finally: Not all songs/artists fit the theme. Which song(s)/artist(s) do (does) not fit in?
Two points for a correct answer!

Limit is OFF.

Well, what are you still waiting for? Off ya go!

Hints!
03. Close to being Rickrolled...but it's actually the walrus of love! (1973)
05. The only band in this quiz, named after their founder. This song peaked at #24 in US (1971).
07. A solo effort by one of the Temptations (1976).
08. The singer's real name is Richard Bryce (1959).
10. What you gonna do in private..? Well, at least use all of your fingers... (1968)
13. Originally sung by Muddy Waters, but this is a later version (1961) that was re-released in 1996. The singer is terminal.
16. Song (1985) by a singer/guitarist and a singer/guitarist who were once in the same band. Both pursued solo careers, not equally successful.
18. He'll forever be singing the blues because of all of his broken hearts (1960).
21. No need to get undressed. Just repeat after me: no need to get undressed (1988).
24. The only Kiwi in this quiz, but hush...not a word to Mary! (1968)
26. She's nobody's child... or is she? (1978)
28. The theme song of a movie featuring a one-time 007 (1969).
31. Tiffeny would definitely know this one... We're one and the same (1988).
42. The only successful solo effort (1965) by a singer/actor who's probably better remembered for being half of a duo with his then wife.
He later pursued a career in politics.
43. A UK #11 hit for this former member of Boyzone (2000).
44. Perhaps the oldest song in this quiz (1950), but still popular today. Originally a B-side, but it took off unexpectedly. The singer is also known for A Tear Fell.
45. Originally a hit for Roy Hamilton, this is a 1961 version by a white soul diva. She's all alone, or so she says.
46. These words aren't actually sung but spoken (1976/77). The singer's a hustler.

Not Rock Me Amadeus either.

The song I'm thinking of may not have been a hit in Canada.

Sadly, Malcolm McLaren has passed away in 2010, so he does fit the theme.
Johnny Rotten is not in this quiz.

#7. 'Walk Away From Love' - David Ruffin
#8. The artist is Dickie Valentine
#10. 'I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten' - Dusty Springfield
#18. 'Heartaches By The Number' - Guy Mitchell
#21. The artist is Jermaine Stewart for sure, but I'm not quite sure of the title... :-\\
#24. 'If I Only Had Time' - John Rowles
#28. 'We Have All The Time In The World'  Louis Armstrong
#42. Artist must be Sonny Bono, but not sure what this song is...
#45. 'Hurt' - Timi Yuro

You were also looking for a couple of artists not fitting the theme...I'm pretty sure that John Rowles (#24) and Slim Whitman (#41) are still very much with us...

I forgot the theme of this quiz when I initially guessed Ronan Keating.  I used to know some of Gately's solo hits, but it's been so long, I cannot remember the titles.

I believe you, but I'd like to know which ones.

The 'old' ones, obviously...

As for #21: it was his least successful song. ;)

'Get Lucky', perhaps?

And as for #42...well, he only had one hit, didn't he? ::)

I'm surprised he even managed that!

I wasn't gonna resort to looking it up, but I did...it's 'Laugh At Me' and no, it still doesn't ring any bells!

Ouch! Missed #3. 'Never Never Gonna Give You Up' - Barry White

Now I could go on and ask you to define 'old' ... but that might embarrass me! ;D :D ;)

'Get Lucky', perhaps?

That's what I was looking for.

You know what? I don't know the song either!
Still managed to reach #9 in UK, I believe.

I was kinda wondering why nobody had answered that one until now. Didn't seem too hard to me.

I'll be posting the remainder later tonight.

Looks like there won't be any answers coming in no more...

05. The only band in this quiz, named after their founder. This song peaked at #24 in US (1971).
          Get It On - Chase

13. Originally sung by Muddy Waters, but this is a later version (1961) that was re-released in 1996. The singer is terminal.
I Just Want To Make Love To You - Etta James

26. She's nobody's child... or is she? (1978)
          Hot Shot - Karen Young

31. Tiffeny would definitely know this one... We're one and the same (1988).
Another Part Of Me - Michael Jackson

43. A UK #11 hit for this former member of Boyzone (2000).
          I Believe - Stephen Gately

44. Perhaps the oldest song in this quiz (1950), but still popular today. Originally a B-side, but it took off unexpectedly. The singer is also known for A Tear Fell.
Music! Music! Music! - Teresa Brewer

46. These words aren't actually sung but spoken (1976/77). The singer's a hustler.
Soul Cha Cha - Van McCoy

The artists still alive are #13 (only just!), #24 and #41.

I know the MJ and Karen Young songs, but not well enough to had gotten them by the lyrics.  I gave that Gately song a listen, and that was the one I was thinking of, but I couldn't remember the title.

I guess that's it for Volume 1. Stay tuned - you never know when (if) there'll be a Volume 2... ::)
