Subject: Dead Or Alive: The Gig In The Sky [Vol. 3 - The Final Batch. WRAPPED UP]

Written By: Henk on 03/07/12 at 2:47 pm

I’ve racked up another 48 songs for you.
Can you name them, and the artist I have in mind?
One point for each correct answer (artist + title).
Most of the artists are no longer with us, except for maybe one or two…
Naming the ones that are still alive earns you 5 bonus points.

Of course, cheating is not appreciated/allowed. ;)

Limit is OFF to start with. Have fun!
:)

Hints! (Work in progress...)
01. The singer is best known for his US #1 hit "Show And Tell" (1973). In UK however he never had a Top 40 hit,
although he came very close with "The Snake" (1968). This song stalled at #30 in US, making it his fourth largest hit.
05. His birth name is Colin David Tooley and he was the lead singer of The Move.
Though this song did not make Top 40 in UK, it reached #25 in The Netherlands.
It's about a decade that's about 60 years in the past.
06. This singer was born into an Italian artist family, but over the years has sung in 12 different languages.
This particualr song (based on "Andalucia") reached #5 in UK and #8 in US in 1955.
07. A super fly multi-instrumentalist, as well as a soul/R&B/funk singer, songwriter and producer.
He also wrote "Something He Can Feel", a hit for Aretha Franklin and En Vogue.
08. A singer with no real chart successes to his name in his home country (UK). One of his songs was covered by Marc Almond,
who took it to #4 in the UK charts. This is another song, however, and it always reminds me of romantic dinners.
09. He was born Charles Weedon Westover, and he was unfortunate enough to have a runaway success with his
first single (1961). This is one of his later singles that reached #12 in US and #4 in UK (1962).
10. Though you're probably more familiar with the cover version by Bonnie Tyler & Shakin' Stevens, I'm looking for the
      original artists.
11. Not a singer with a string of hits. His biggest UK hit was "Journey" (1972, #23), but this 1979 song was a big hit in
      The Netherlands (#7).
14.

18. The only UK Top 40 hit for this French singer (nicknamed "Mr. 100.000 Volts"), best known elsewhere for "Nathalie".
22.

23.

24.

25.

30. The singer has a twin brother and two other brothers (all singers), who are all just (about) as famous.
The song has a lot to do with trains.
31. Clearly, this singer isn't as unforgettable as he liked to think. Maybe it's the heat of the season...
32. The singer is Israeli, and most of the song is in Hebrew. She originally performed it in 1978, but the 1988 remix became an
      international ht.
33.

34.

35. The song was covered by The Corrs, and the singer used to be in a band with Gary Moore.

38. Lead singer of Zapp with a distinct voice that he also lend to songs like "California Love", with a solo effort that
      reached #3 in US.
39. The singer had a thing with animals, with songs like "The Dog", "Can Your Monkey do The Dog",
"Do The Funky Penguin" and "The Funky Bird". This 1970 song, however, is about poultry.
40. American jazz singer, nicknamed "Sailor", "Sassy" and "The Divine One", wih hits like "Make Yourself Comfortable",
"Whatever Lola Wants" and "C'est La Vie". This song (from 1959) was her biggest hit.
41. Known as the "King of Rock'n'Soul" and the "Bishop of Soul", his best known song is "Everybody Needs Somebody
To Love". The song I'm after didn't chart in the US or UK, but reached #37 in The Netherlands.
It's about things not staying the way they are.
43. Country singer, best known for the classic "Stand By Your Man". This song is about a break-up.
44. I'm shocked... I really am. This is a classic! No phone, no pool, no pets...
45. He wrote songs like "If I Were A Carpenter", "Reason To Believe" and "Misty Roses", but had only little success
as a performing artist ("Simple Song Of Freedom"). This is one of his other songs, and a personal favorite
      of mine (a Dutch #5 in 1967, and a #4 in 1987).
46. When I say he was a member of CCR, you're probably thinking of his brother first. It's not him I'm after.
This is the 'other' brother, with just about his only claim to fame as a solo artist. It failed to make a dent in any chart.
47. A one hit wonder in UK (#14, 1986) and The Netherlands (#20). She had no Top 40 hits in US mainstream charts,
but several of her songs did very well in R&B charts ("Sweet, Sweet Love", "Congratulations" and "Special").

Thanks Carol! :)

Your four are all correct, although it wasn't Elvis I was thinking of. There are at least 32 versions recorded prior to Elvis's.

21. Is "Me and Bobby McGee."  My favorite version is by Janis Joplin, but I know it was originally written by Kris Kristofferson...

On the other hand, #21 is correct. Janis Joplin is who I was looking for, so look no further. ;)

Well, you've all done your best, but it just wasn't good enough this time. :P

Leave Quincy Jones and Ashford & Simpson out of it.  You won this one fair and square, those really were obscure!

Sadly, I don't feel like a winner. :( There's not much fun in quizzes that don't get finished.

Don't fret, Henk.  None of my quizzes have ever been finished.  The point is to have fun.  :-*

Oh, I'm rather used to my quizzes not getting finished (if one does get finished, I've obviously made it too easy  ;)) . It's just that this time there's quite a lot left unanswered, when I thought the songs weren't really that obscure.

Of the ones that were left, very few of those were hits in North America, so for us, they were obscure.  With that being said though, I probably should have known the Ofra Haza, Roger and Sylvester ones, as I know what they sound like, but I s'pose I have not heard them enough to pick out lyrics.

Still a good quiz though Henk.  A fantastic job as always :)
