Subject: 1979 Song Rating!

Written By: Criz on 08/25/03 at 10:36 a.m.

Well, it's not so 'random' anymore. I'll start from 1979 (with reference to the British charts, so most songs will be in the top 20 :]) beacuse that's the first year I really start liking a lot of music from and slowly move through each year. Rate form a scale of 1-5 or just comment. I'll post mine later :)

Blondie - Heart Of Glass
Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive
Elvis Costello & the Attractions - Olivers Army
Queen - Don't Stop Me Now
Cars - Just What I Needed
Squeeze - Cool For Cats
M - Pop Muzik
Blondie - Sunday Girl
Tubeway Army - Are Friends Electric
Anita Ward - Ring My Bell
Chic - Good Times
Knack - My Sharona
Police - Cant Stand Losing You
Boomtown Rats - I Don't Like Mondays
Flying Lizards - Money
Gary Numan - Cars
Michael Jackson - Don't Stop Til You Get Enough

Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive  Now here's a song that really needs to die.  2
Elvis Costello & the Attractions - Olivers Army  5
Cars - Just What I Needed  If I ever have a band, it will probably be a cheap ripoff of the Cars.  5
M - Pop Muzik  Much too techno-y for me.  2
Anita Ward - Ring My Bell  Not my type of disco.  2
Chic - Good Times  Aptly titled.  5
Knack - My Sharona  I'm kinda torn on this one.  I'll give it a 3
Police - Cant Stand Losing You  4

Flying Lizards - Money  Gimmicky but okay.  3.5
Gary Numan - Cars
Michael Jackson - Don't Stop Til You Get Enough  The King of Pop, at a time when he truly deserved the title.  5

Police - Message In A Bottle  Perhaps their best?  5
Specials - Message To You Rudy  Never really got the Specials.  2

Ah! '79! Remember it well...sort-of...!

Well, at least I should have have no trouble with these...!

Blondie - Heart Of Glass 4 - effortless merging of new-wave and disco...
Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive 3 - great performance but (and this is no fault of Gloria's) soooo overplayed, and that's not including the karaoke slaughters...!
Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Oliver's Army 4 - amongst his best, and a very clever lyric to boot...
Queen - Don't Stop Me Now 4 - noisy racket which rattles along alarmingly - puts a lot of their stuff to shame...!
Cars - Just What I Needed 3 - not their best, but okay...
Squeeze - Cool For Cats 4 - heh! And I can still recite this song word for word...great!
M - Pop Musik 4 - off-the-wall sort-of thing...was obviously going to be a one-hit wonder, but that's better than being remembered for nothing...
Blondie - Sunday Girl 2 - a bit ho-hum...
Tubeway Army - Are Friends Electric 2 - which, for those unaware, was Gary Numan's previous record (before 'Cars') - a bit of a dirge, truth be told...
Anita Ward - Ring My Bell 3 - okay piece of disco-fluff...horribly dated now, with those syn-drums...!
Chic - Good Times 5 - the real McCoy! Nothing else to be added here...
Knack - My Sharona 4 - fun song! Disappeared soon after, but well remembered...
Police - Can't Stand Losing You 3 - the 'big league' hit, but lacks a certain something...I had this on lurid blue vinyl...!
Boomtown Rats - I Don't Like Mondays 4 - probably their best work...
Flying Lizards - Money 2 - different, I suppose, but apart from novelty value, not much else...yes, Billy F - that is the Barrett Strong original being mauled...!
Gary Numan - Cars 3 - a bit more accessible than Tubeway Army, still a bit dirge-like...
Michael Jackson - Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough 5 - (just to prove to Kenny that I'm not evil...!) awesome stuff, still sounds that way today...
Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star 4 - a bit clumsy in places, but still a good 'un...
Police - Message In A Bottle 3 - still not quite there for the boys, but slightly more palatable than the last...had this on lurid green vinyl...!
Blondie - Dreaming 5 - back on form! A killer pop song, quite possibly their finest...
Specials - A Message To You Rudy 2 - Ah! The Two-Tone revolution just gathering speed...okay (just), but I still head for Dandy (Livingstone's) version...
Pretenders - Brass In Pocket 4 - a cool song in many aspects...
Police - Walking On The Moon 4 - now we're getting there...! Fabulous dub-type rhythm...works well...had this on boring black vinyl...!
Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall 3 - was okay at the time, but became a bit tedious after a while...
The Beat - Tears Of A Clown 2 - rattled along with no sense of emotion like the original...yes, Billy - the Miracles' original...
Sugarhill Gang - Rapper's Delight 2 - went on for a week and a half...done nothing for me...
Nolans - I'm In The Mood For Dancing 4 - corny as they come, but appealed to many...the sort of thing your mother would happily shake a leg to...!
Clash - London Calling 4 - I wasn't really much into the Clash, but this was powerful...

Phew!

...hey Criz! No 'Banana Splits' by The Dickies...??!! (I had this on lurid yellow vinyl... - okay, that's enough..!)

Hi Criz

This is a great list that brings back a lot of memories for me as a 16 year old. I don't have enough time (here at work ;)) to rate them all but I do have a confession to make.

I purchased "I'm In The Mood For Dancing" by The Nolans (still have it actually, with picture sleeve) and I *gulp* saw them perform live around the 1979 era. I have to admit I enjoyed the show, mainly 'cos I thought Colleen Nolan was a total babe. I've seen her recently on TV - "Celebrity Fat Club" or something - and I still think she's attractive. I don't think she really qualifies as "fat".

OK, you can all laugh, but I'm opening up to you guys here. And in my defence, I also saw The Clash perform live 3 times and "London Calling" is my favourite track on your list!
