Criz, thanks for this memory jerker from my teenage years. Here goes with my ratings...

Joe Jackson - It's Different For Girls 4

Ramones - Baby I Love You 2
what were they thinking of? It's an experiment for them for for me just didn't come off.

Specials - Too Much, Too Young 5
one of the shortest songs to make #1 in UK chart history, if I remember correctly...try wearing a cap!

Vapours - Turning Japanese 4
OK, who's going to be first to remind us what this song is all about? ;)

Captain and Tenille - Do That To Me One More Time 2

Elvis Costello - Can't Stand Up For Falling Down 3

Fern Kinney  - Together We Are Beautiful 3

Blondie  - Atomic 3.5

Dexy's Midnight Runners - Geno 5
"academic inspiration, you gave me none..." ...I'm off now, playing air saxophone...

Jam - Going Underground 3
much to my sister's disappointment, I never really got into The Jam in the way that she did

Blondie - Call Me 3

Lipps Inc. - Funkytown 3

Martha & Muffins - Echo Beach 3.5
an Annie Nightingale Sunday request show favourite

Olivia Newton-John/Electric Light Orchestra - Xanadu 1
I had a summer job in 1980 in a factory where the workforce listened to Radio City (Liverpool radio station) all day. One day they played Xanadu 11 times in under 7 hours and I probably heard it over 50 times in one week. I've never been able to listen to this song again!

Odyssey - Use It Up & Wear It Out 4

Joy Divison - Love Will Tear Us Apart 3
Joy Division were good but New Order were (are) better

Kate Bush - Babooshka 4
Kate rocks, but I think this was one of her weakest singles (despite the video).

Diana Ross - Upside Down 2
wasn't this #1 immediately after Xanadu? I certainly remember hearing it played almost as much on Radio City.

David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes 3.5

Jam - Start 3
ah yes, the "Taxman" riff ripoff

Queen Another One Bites - The Dust 3

Madness - Baggy Trousers 5
Their finest hour

Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me 4

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Enola Gay 3
I heard "Messages" recently on Radio 2, Stuart Maconie I think played it. I preferred that one.

David Bowie - Fashion 3

Motorhead - Ace Of Spades 5
the classic Motorhead line up and single

Blondie - The Tide Is High 3

John Lennon - (Just Like) Starting Over 3.5

Roxy Music - The Same Old Scene ???
I don't remember this - was it on the "Flesh and Blood" album?

Abba - Super Trouper 2
Abba did some classic singles. This for me wasn't one of them.

Spandau Ballet - To Cut A Long Story Short 4
When the Spands were really cool...

Adam & The Ants - Antmusic 3

Visage - Fade To Grey 3

And if I may I'll add my own favourite single from late '79/early 1980 - Seventeen by The Regents. You never hear this played anymore :(.

Vapours - Turning Japanese  Funny song! 4
Captain and Tenille - Do That To Me One More Time  Not nearly as good as their first smash hit "Love Will Keep Us Together".  3
Blondie - Call Me  Good song, but I heard it way too much! 3
Lipps Inc. - Funkytown  Oh boy, this one brings back memories! 4.5 ;D
Olivia Newton-John/Electric Light Orchestra - Xanadu  3.5
Diana Ross - Upside Down  Mediocre. 3
David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes  3
Queen Another One Bites - The Dust  I can remember thinking that a disco band did this! 3.5 ;D
Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me  3
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Enola Gay  Excellent band, but this is not one of their best. 3.5
Blondie - The Tide Is High  I never cared much for this song. 2.5
John Lennon - (Just Like) Starting Over  Superb! 5+ 8)
ABBA - Super Trouper  Not one of their best. 3

I took out the ones I didn't know.  :)

Good God...1980! Remember it like yesterday...very worrying!

Joe Jackson - It's Different For Girls 4 - Joe in a laid back, introspective feel...changed his image so much I couldn't really keep up - but this was good...
Ramones - Baby I Love You 1 - the meeting of the rawksters and the producer (Spector)...they all should've stayed in bed...
Specials - Too Much Too Young 5 - blew me away in two minutes...! Rest of the EP was cool, too...
Vapors - Turning Japanese 4 - good piece of what some would call 'power pop'...sadly, they couldn't maintain it...
Captain & Tennille - Do That To Me One More Time 4 - quite a few would call it 'drippy' - but it's fine with me...
Elvis Costello - I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down 2 - Elvis digs out an old Sam & Dave tune...sounds a bit rushed...
Fern Kinney - Together We Are Beautiful 3 - from the same 'drippy' department as C&T, but not half as good...pleasant enough...
Blondie - Atomic 4 - another good 'un before they started to lose the plot...
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Geno 5 - good old raucous belter with loads of horns...much better than their later work...
Jam - Going Underground 4 - the first Jam record I bought (I ignored all the previous!) - fine lyrics...
Blondie - Call Me 2 - hackneyed piece of Euro-disco (courtesy of Moroder) - not good...
Lipps Inc - Funky Town 4 - much berated by many, but I'll bet everyone's had a bop to it...!
Martha & The Muffins - Echo Beach 3 - still enjoyable...
Livvy & ELO - Xanadu 4 - for sheer over-the-top value...
Odyssey - Use It Up And Wear It Out 4 - exactly the same comments as Lipps Inc...
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart 2 - I'll doubtless upset someone here...but was this song all that good?
Kate Bush - Babooshka 3 - not her best, but no less enjoyable for that...
Diana Ross - Upside Down 5 - an all-time classic...
David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes 3 - not his best...
Jam - Start 3 - not as attention-grabbing as 'Underground'...
Queen - Another One Bites The Dust 3 - sampled to within an inch of its life...sounded like they were a bit lacking in the ideas department...
Madness - Baggy Trousers 4 - when they could do no wrong...marvellous...and typically British...
Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me 5 - they really delivered the goods on this one...a brilliant intro...
OMD - Enola Gay 4 - good effort from one of the many 'synth' bands that were appearing around that time...
David Bowie - Fashion 2 - looks like he was in the 'no ideas' department with Queen as well...(I suppose that's how 'Under Pressure' came about...!)
Motorhead - Ace Of Spades 5 - incredible piece of noise...
Blondie - The Tide Is High 4 - good cover of the Paragons reggae song, much better than their last effort, but the rot set in just after...
John Lennon - (Just Like) Starting Over 2 - ignoring all sorts of references to the tragic events that followed, this was a very weak song...
Roxy Music - The Same Old Scene 2 - (or, as some would bitchily call it - 'The Same Old Tune'!) This wasn't one of their better ones...
Abba - Super Trouper 2 - extraordinarily bad...for Abba...
Spandau Ballet - To Cut A Long Story Short 4 - heh! When they all used to dress in leather skirts! Well remembered effort...
Adam & The Ants - Antmusic 4 - a taste of what was to come in '81...one of his best efforts before things snowballed into mediocrity...
Visage - Fade To Grey 4 - dead mysterious electropop outing with strange vocals...no mistaking that riff though...

maddog - '7Teen'! And not yet a woman...good song that!
My own personal preference (also from early '80) was the decidedly off-the-wall 'Living By Numbers' by New Musik...

To put it bluntly, 'Turning Japanese' is a song about masturbation. The title is supposed to refer to the way the eyes go on the verge of, well you know what!!

And as for the Police track, it is about a student/teacher relationship.
